The Cover Cafe 2007 contest is open for voting. There are seven categories and ten finalists per category. Go on over and vote for the best covers in 2007.
Jane is a long time romance reader whose passion is, you guessed it, reading. She's currently loving contemporary authors like Sarah Mayberry and Kristan Higgins but her first love will always be the historical. Some of her old time favorites are Amanda Quick and Johanna Lindsey and some of the new favorites are Sherry Thomas, Joanna Bourne and Claudia Dain.

Well, I thought some of the “best” nominees belonged in the “worst” category (and vice versa for a couple of the worst noms), but it was still fun.
One cover I loved so much I went to buy the the book but discovered it was being shilled on Amazon reviews. All 5 star reviews, all who listed locations were from the same part of the USA, and one referred to the author by what I think is her RL last name. Then the review below it was posted by someone who had the same last name as the author’s RL name. I decided to pass.
It is a lovely cover though.
Edited to add that I have to agree that some of the “best” were not very good. I had a hard time on the stepbacks. Finally just picked the one that annoyed me the least.
Wow!!! Some of these covers were great. The “worst” category wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. I’ve seen some stinkers compared to those.
Did anyone else notice that 7 out of the 10 romantic suspense covers featured a building? And one had an airplane? Only one had a couple. Weird. You’d think they’d go for more variety.
And on the worse covers…what? At least three of them had absolutely nothing wrong with them. Maybe not the best, but surely not the worst!
I know — I wanted to exchange a couple of those with some of the dual image covers :shudder: I didn’t realize just how much I hate the naked chest/historically inaccurate dress/sexed up historical cover art until I had to choose among those covers, lol. Although the straight historical category had a couple of absolutely beautiful covers, IMO. And clearly, the Ted Kaczynski cabin has become the rom susp cover model, which may be a little whacky but IMO beats more shirtless and waxed cover hunks.
The Eloisa James one had the weird hair going– she was in a gale, he wasn’t. I guess he was kneeling at her feet to use her for a windbreak.
Yeah, he wouldn’t want to mess up that fabulous hair. Which is supposed to be dark as midnight (and hers a deep golden blond). Hair actually played an important role in that book, which made that cover even more bizarre to me.
Awww Big Spankable Asses isn’t the best cover of the year? *G*
I agree with both Robin and Jennifer: the worst were not the worst I’ve seen by far–but the dual image covers made me gasp in outright horror.
Also, I protest Kink’s inclusion in the Worst. I think that design is very fresh, very strong–and edgy, yes, but heck, the novel is called “Kink.” What’s it supposed to look like?
I had the exact same response, Evie; IMO those double image covers were far more difficult to take (dare I say “obscene” — not for the sexuality but the sheer garishness), and like you said, the cover for Kink was appropriate and not, IMO, over the top.
I’m still trying to figure out, though, whether I like or hate the Big Spankable Asses title and cover.
I’m with you on the Kink cover. It was one I was shaking my head over…I thought it was really great, innovative and eye-catching.
I thought some of the step-backs were very old school, but I still found one I liked.
