Daily Deals for Inspys and More Vampire Smut.
By Jane • Feb 25th, 2008 • Category: Publishing News • •This is only to note that despite the poor sales of previous blogger books, certain types still sell. A significant deal in PublishersMarketplace parlance is $251,000 - $499,000. Part of the deal could have been based on her years as a columnist and not as a blogger.
NYT health columnist and “Well” blogger Tara Parker-Pope’s THE SCIENCE OF MARRIAGE, practical, evidence-based advice about what makes relationships work — and not work — based on marital health research, to Amy Hertz at Dutton, in a significant deal, in a pre-empt, for publication in late 2009/early 2010, by Lynn Johnston at Lynn Johnston Literary (world).
Not sure who Tropper is but apparently he must sell alot of books. The major deal denotes advances of $500,000 and up.
Jonathan Tropper’s two upcoming novels, including one on fatherhood, moving to Ben Sevier at Dutton, in a major deal, in a pre-empt, for publication beginning in 2009, by Simon Lipskar at Writers House (NA).
Tamera Alexander is, I believe, an inspy author. Given the major deal status of this sale, I wonder how Avon Inspire is doing. I don’t read Inspy fiction but my mother does. I’ll have to buy her a few Alexander books to see what she says. I did give her one Inspy Arc I had received from Avon but she said it was too dry. I wasn’t sure what that meant but she wasn’t interested in anymore.
Rita winner and triple finalist Tamera Alexander’s IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER, the first in a series set during the Civil War about an impoverished woman who becomes an assistant to the owner of a plantation and the richest woman in America — involving blockade running, runaway slaves, the art world, and a master gardener who teaches her where true beauty can be found, to Charlene Patterson at Bethany House, in a major deal, at auction, by Natasha Kern at Natasha Kern Literary Agency (World).
This is categorized as a Fiction: Thriller sale not a Sci-Fi/Fantasy but because of its title and the fact that it is a sale to Juno, I am guessing that it is a Sci-Fi/Fantasy book. Am I wrong in thinking that Kane writes as a erotic romance author at one time?
PERSONAL DEMONS author Stacia Kane’s DEMON INSIDE, to Paula Guran of Juno (World).
Don’t have any idea what this is about. Given that it is sold to Genesis Press, I assume that it features some kind of multicultural aspect.
Renee Alexis’s RED SKY, to Deborah Schumaker at Genesis Press, in a nice deal, for publication in 2009, by Misherald Brown at ML Brown & Associates (US).
Jayne will be excited about this. She reviewed Higginbotham’s Hugh and Bess here and enjoyed it.
Susan Higginbotham’s THE TRAITOR’S WIFE, following the favorite niece of King Edward II as she becomes entangled in a complex web of treachery and betrayal, to Peter Lynch at Sourcebooks, in a nice deal, by Judy Klein of Kleinworks Agency, on behalf of iUniverse Star.
Um, guessing again here, superhero romance?
A.J. Menden’s PHENOMENAL GIRL FIVE, to Chris Keeslar at Dorchester, for publication in Winter 2008, in a two-book deal, by Michelle Wolfson at Wolfson Literary Agency (World).
I think Bethany House is an inspirational publisher so this really fascinates me because from my fundy (short for fundamentalist) teaching, I thought that there was no other living creatures out there except on earth.
Relentless and Fearless author Robin Parrish’s OFFWORLD, in which a four-person NASA crew returns from a 2-year mission to Mars and sets off on a more complex and dangerous land-based journey after they discover that every human and animal on Earth has disappeared, to David Long at Bethany House, for publication in Fall 2009, in a three-book deal, by Beth Jusino at Alive Communications (world).
I had no idea that there was a SAHM series. I thought most of the romance books were about SAHM. (just kidding, kind of).
Meredith Efken’s DOT MOMS, the third in the author’s SAHM (Stay-at-home-mom) series, to Melissa Endlich at Steeple Hill, in a nice deal, for publication in Summer 2009, by Steve Laube at the Steve Laube Agency (World).
Hmm. This is a whole book?
Libby Sternberg’s FIRE ME, in which a young woman spends a day at the office trying to convince her boss that she should be the employee chosen to be laid off, with film rights previously optioned to Landscape Entertainment, to Deb Werksman at Sourcebooks, by Holly Root at Waxman Literary Agency (world).
Richelle Mead’s next three books in her urban fantasy series featuring Georgina Kincaid, most recently seen in SUCCUBUS ON TOP, again to John Scognamiglio at Kensington, by Jim McCarthy at Dystel & Goderich Literary Management.
This is a foreign sale, but I think the blurb that says “at least a little actual writing” is probably the most hysterical thing I’ve read at PublishersMarketplace.
Eminem’s THE WAY I AM, a collection of photographs, art, sketches for lyrics, notes from journals, and at least a little actual writing, to Ian Preece at Orion, by Marc Gerald at The Agency Group and Luca Scalisi (UK/Commonwealth).
For some reason, Jones’ paranormals don’t resonate with me like her contemporary.
Lisa Renee Jones’s KNIGHTS OF WHITE, in which the Knights of White again triumph over adversity and find love, to Ann Leslie Tuttle at Harlequin Nocturne, in a nice deal, by Natasha Kern at Natasha Kern Literary Agency (World).
Which makes me excited to read this deal. I do wish we would get another baseball book though. Doesn’t anyone else like sports related books other than me?
Lisa Renee Jones’s THE COSTUME SHOP, in which a woman encounters adventure and romance playing a new role, to Kathryn Lye at Harlequin Blaze, in a nice deal, for publication in Winter 2009, by Natasha Kern at Natasha Kern Literary Agency (World).
Bonnie Vanak’s KATIA’S STORY, to Ann Leslie Tuttle at Harlequin Nocturne, in a nice deal, by Natasha Kern at Natasha Kern Literary Agency (World).
Interesting. I wonder what a “godless woman” is.
Kameron Hurley’s GOD’S WAR, on a far-distant colony, a centuries-old holy war rages, and it may take a godless woman to end it, to Juliet Ulman at Bantam Dell, for publication in Fall 2009, by Jennifer Jackson of the Donald Maass Literary Agency (NA).
I love, love the title of this book.
Leslie Muir’s THE WEE PATISSERIE, with Betsy Lewin to illustrate, a gastronomic adventure of mice size proportion, to Tamson Weston at Hyperion Children’s, by Anna Webman at Curtis Brown. Lewin represented by Emily van Beek of Pippin Properties.
This sounds funny to me. Shot by a drunk hunter? Laid-off children’s librarian? Smutty vampire stuff? I’m there.
Molly Harper’s SINGLE UNDEAD FEMALE, about a laid-off children’s librarian, shot by a drunk hunter who mistakes her for a deer, then saved and turned by a hunky, brooding vampire, to Jennifer Heddle at Pocket, at auction, in a three-book deal, by Stephany Evans at FinePrint Literary Management.
Jane is a long time romance reader whose passion is, you guessed it, reading. Jane also does not like to talk about herself in the third person, but apparently this is the way that this biography thing works (although in a true biography, someone else would be writing this blurb). Anyway, currently Jane loves urban fantasy authors Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews. She's really excited about this year's crop of historicals including Joanna Bourne's The Spymaster's Lady and Sherry Thomas' Private Arrangements and the upcoming Loretta Chase Her Scandalous Ways.
She's looking for a good contemporary author. Email her with a recommendation!

I am so pleased for Susan Higginbotham!
The best inspy I’ve ever read is Shadow Heart by Laura Kinsale, a book with rather kinky sex for a mainstream historical romance. Go figure.
Stacia Kane writes erotic romance under the name December Quinn. Stacia’s Personal Demons and The Demon Inside are urban fantasies, she says.
Yes, A.J. Menden’s Phenomenal Girl Five is a superhero romance. I think she’s started working on Book 2, Tech Girl, except it’s one word and spelled [deliberately] incorrectly, so I can’t remember its true title.
Have a lovely day! :-)
