Essence.com Announces Its Winners

Essence held its first annual Literary Award ceremony last night. The Storyteller of the Year Award was given to LA Banks, author of the Vampire Huntress series. The Storyteller of the Year award is voted on by the ESSENCE readers.
It has awarded the The Pirate’s Daughter by Margaret Cezair-Thompson its first ever Essence Literary Award for fiction.
Terry McMillan was given the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award. There was a certain synergy in this award since McMillan had won ESSENCE’s first ever college-writing contest in 1974.
All other winners can be seen at the Essence.com site.
Jane is a long time romance reader whose passion is, you guessed it, reading. Jane also does not like to talk about herself in the third person, but apparently this is the way that this biography thing works (although in a true biography, someone else would be writing this blurb). Anyway, currently Jane loves urban fantasy authors Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews. She's really excited about this year's crop of historicals including Joanna Bourne's The Spymaster's Lady and Sherry Thomas' Private Arrangements and the upcoming Loretta Chase Her Scandalous Ways.
She's looking for a good contemporary author. Email her with a recommendation!

Major congrats to LA Banks. She deserves it, and it couldn’t have happened to a nicer woman.
Thanks for the info, Jane. Very interesting.
CONGRATS to LA! I agree there’s not a nicer chick in the biz.
Woot! Woot! I don’t normally do the neck biters, but I do like hers.
Yeah L.A.! Love her VHL series!
