Okay, minor correction: In Canada, before the provincial credit, that $1000 stock donation would only cost you $437.50 because the federal government would give a $262.50 tax deduction.

I don’t know what the tax deduction would be in the US because I’m not entirely familiar with the IRS.

How to really bankrupt Nora–donate stocks!
If you donate appreciated stock to a legit charity, both the Canadian (Revenue Canada) and US (IRS) tax agencies do not realize the appreciation as a capital gain. A quick and dirty example: You donate $1000 of stocks that only cost you $700 when you originally purchased them. The charity receives $2000 (NR is matching your donation) and you get a tax receipt for $1000–but it only cost you $700 and you don’t have to pay the capital gains tax on the $300 appreciation!

I donated, but I’d rather also donate to some sort of charity that helps Native Americans reclaim their heritage. Anyone know of one?
