Harlequin Partners with Daily Lit to Serialize Books

By Jane • Dec 12th, 2007 • Category: Publishing News • •

GalleyCat wrote today that Daily Lit is partnering with Harlequin to deliver bit-sized chunks of books to your computer or mobile device. Daily Lit specializes in serializing the classics which might not seem a good fit on the surface, but romance readers are voracious readers and having a bit of Gift of the Magi (solidly classified in the romance category for me) with their Virgin Bride story might be a good mix. The installments are meant to be read in under 5 minutes.

DailyLit plans to offer 100 of Harlequin’s backlist titles and 20 frontlist titles each month with most novels priced under $5.00. When you sign up, you can set when you want each installment to be delivered. Once you are done with your installment, you can request another one to be sent immediately. It does not appear that you can get the whole book downloaded at one time.

Interestingly, because the book chunks are sent via email, I presume that they are sent without any digital rights management thus you could paste all those installments together and have one legally obtained Harlequin ebook without DRM. I wonder if this signals a move away from DRM by Harlequin.

One report says that there are over 100,000 DailyLit subscriptions so this is a nice move for Harlequin authors.

Jane is a long time romance reader whose passion is, you guessed it, reading. Jane also does not like to talk about herself in the third person, but apparently this is the way that this biography thing works (although in a true biography, someone else would be writing this blurb). Anyway, currently Jane loves urban fantasy authors Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews. She's really excited about this year's crop of historicals including Joanna Bourne's The Spymaster's Lady and Sherry Thomas' Private Arrangements and the upcoming Loretta Chase Her Scandalous Ways. She's looking for a good contemporary author. Email her with a recommendation!
