Should DearAuthor Allow Its Blog to be Resold on Kindle?

By Jane • Nov 26th, 2007 • Category: Misc • •

I think hero names based on Satan should be banished (i.e., Lucien, Lucifer, Devil, Damien)

What do you think?

Jane is a long time romance reader whose passion is, you guessed it, reading. Jane also does not like to talk about herself in the third person, but apparently this is the way that this biography thing works (although in a true biography, someone else would be writing this blurb). Anyway, currently Jane loves urban fantasy authors Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews. She's really excited about this year's crop of historicals including Joanna Bourne's The Spymaster's Lady and Sherry Thomas' Private Arrangements and the upcoming Loretta Chase Her Scandalous Ways. She's looking for a good contemporary author. Email her with a recommendation!

  1. I don’t think this poll is working….

  2. I get weird database errors when I vote. P.S. I voted “WWND?”

  3. K - I think it works now. Probably need to vote again.

  4. Would DA get a cut of the revenue? (I’m a die-hard capitalist.)

  5. I voted yes, but I second Ann’s question. If you get no money should they get the privilege?

  6. As a faithful reader of Dear Author I want the Evil Overlord of Kindle to SEE what would make the Kindle better. So if this blog is on it, then there is a chance a Kindle minion might read it. I want a good e-reader Sooooooo bad. They are almost there, but not good enough to get $450.00 out of my pocket for “not quite good enough”.

  7. I couldn’t vote, the poll doesn’t work for me, but as soon as I saw the question, my first thought was that it would be a bit hypocritical. It seems like supporting a market that you’ve already been openly disapproving of (unless coming off as disapproving is unintentional, but your posts haven’t been pro-Kindle, I’m thinking)

Would I be shocked and dismayed if you did? No, you put a lot of time and effort into the blog and I can see wanting money for it, some days.

I had this great analogy about me saying no-never to Daddy/Daughter fetish fiction being romance, and then Nora deciding to write it for me so I caved because of the money, because if Nora writes it, they will come (excuse the rather bad, but unintentional play on words) but instead of going into great detail on that highly unlikely (though somewhat amusing) analogy, I’ll just stick with my original no. (for those wondering why that analogy popped into my head, you’ll have to go read Karen Scott’s blog)

  8. Yes most certainly but I’m a pig.

Do you get paid for this privilege?

  9. OK, I voted “no” before I read this:

    > Would DA get a cut of the revenue? (I’m a die-hard capitalist.)

But, hey, if they’re willing to pay you, then go for it. Just make sure you keep telling it like it is.

  10. The Evil Overlord of Amazon does not call them Kindle Prisoners we call them Kindle Kind.

  11. Yes, DA would get a small percentage of the 99cents or 1.99 although it makes the most sense to me that the owners of Kindle use the web browser and read DA for free through that.

  12. Well Jane if they want to pay for it do not stop them. They want to PAY FOR IT!

  13. If they’re paying you, why not? I would object if they’re using your work free of charge, but I have no objection to you getting a percentage. If someone wants to use Kindle for the ease of accessing information, and is willing to pay for that when it’s free elsewhere, that’s their choice.

  14. Go for it.

  15. If they’re going to pay you even if you bash the Kindle, then go for it!

  16. Geez, Angie. I’ve been reading Karen’s blog and that almost confused me… lol.

As to the original question, I’m thinking, If I was in your shoes and had the opportunity, the thought of the money might be appealing, but it’s also kind of supporting the beast. I don’t much like the idea of supporting the beast.

  17. gggrrrr… my post disappeared.

I had this great analogy about me saying no-never to Daddy/Daughter fetish fiction being romance

Anyway, Angie, I’ve been reading Karen’s blog and that comment almost confused me lol

    Oye. Long day.

My thoughts in general on the Kindle/DA deal… well, as appealing as the idea would be to make a profit, if I were in your shoes, I’d be thinking that the Kindle deal would be feeding the beast, encouraging him. I really don’t want Kindle to get any encouragement. I’d probably pass, although money always tempts me.

  18. I agree, if they’re going to pay you, why not?

  19. If you’re getting a cut I don’t see why not. Get paid to tell them why they suck? Why not?

  20. Go for it.

  21. Can’d decide (true libra). But DA will look good even on a fugly device.

  22. I chose “Yes, we shouldn’t be the only ones tormented by your blog.” because I think it fits the personality (and I mean that in the good way) of this blog so well.

However, that’s only because you’ve been critical of the Kindle, which makes my reasoning seem hypocritical. (Meaning, if someone had been touting the “revolutionary” wonders of the Kindle, and I found out they were affiliated with Amazon.com that resulted in a financial gain, they would lose credibility with me.)

At the same time, I strongly support the potential increased exposure being listed on Amazon.com would bring. I want MORE people to read Dear Author.

Can I ride the fence and support the idea but recognize the cost (perceptions of compromed integrity) may not be worth it?

  23. *compromised

  24. If they take a full feed, no censoring, then it might be entertaining.

Hypocritical? Maybe a little, but I think the real problem would be that if you’re getting revenue from Amazon, it creates the perception of bias. Are you nudging the reviews in the direction of selling more books for Amazon? I very much doubt you would (short of being kidnapped by Amazon representatives at the next RWA Nationals and force-fed mind-altering drugs subjecting you to their will), but it’s going to be an easy thing for someone to say if they don’t agree with one of your reviews.

That doesn’t stop me using an affiliate link when I review a book on my blog, and I think syndicating Dear Author through the Kindle falls into the same category, but it’s an issue to be aware of.

  25. Go for it. It would be a great addition to the whole big conversation that is Amazon. And I’m sure there are readers who don’t even know they need Dear Author yet. How could you deprive them?

  26. I voted for WWND. If you’re getting paid, why the hell not?

  27. WWND?

  28. Heck, if they want to pay you to propagandize against them, go for it. Take it down from within! :D

One day this week, the Kindle ad on Amazon had a photo of the Kindle with changing pictures of content. One of the blogs it showed was Boing Boing. I got a real kick out of that. You think Cory Doctorow is a Kindle fan?
