Fictionwise offers 100% Rebate on Entire Catalog

I received a newsletter from Fictionwise today offering a 100% Micropay Rebate on its entire 42,000 book catalog. The catch is that the sale lasts only one week and it is offered only to those who have a buywise subscription expiration date AFTER October 31, 2012. My Buywise Expiration date is February of 2012.

The good news is that anyone can take advantage of this sale IF they sign up for a Buywise membership that extends beyond October 31, 2012. For me, I would have to buy a 1 year extension. A full five year subscription is $124.95 with an automatic $5.00 micropay rebate.

The offer also is limited to $300 in total rebates. Essentially, Fictionwise is offering $605.00 worth of ebooks for a total cash layout of $424.95 which is 30% off each book’s club price which is 15% off the retail price. It’s a pretty good deal but you have to spend the $424.95 within one week. I’ve got to admit that I am really tempted.

Why do this when you get the similar discounts and better at BooksOnBoard without the upfront investment? This is a way for Fictionwise to get $425 upfront – and a big chunk of it at pure profit – smart business for them, but it’s going to take some serious spreadsheet work and long-term planning to even see if it could be worthwhile when other options exist. Maybe it’s kind of like a health club plan, take the money up front and figure that most people won’t maximize the advantage over time. I’d just as soon get my discounts without paying for them.

  2. I am also very skeptical of this offer. I don’t want to have to pay so much money up front just to get a good price on ebooks. Luckily I can get low prices without paying membership fees upfront at BooksOnBoard.com. BooksOnBoard has the lowest prices I’ve found for ebooks on the internet and they have a better selection of Adobe ebooks for my Mac!
