On Running with Quills, Katherine Stone announced a new website to be launched November 1, 2007, called WritersareReaders.com (website currently not operational). The website will feature reviews written by authors. While Stone says that while negative reviews are acceptable, the only reviews she has received are the ones beloved by authors. While it would be fun to see what is on the keeper shelf of a favorite author, I wonder how much credibility will be retained if all the reviews are positive?
Plus, I read that contributor Jayne Ann Krentz would never appear on a site that gave negative reviews.

We don’t like to censor comments nor do we endorse the comments of any poster. We do reserve the right to moderate comments but most of the time will not, believing, as Justice Brandeis did, that the greater good is in “more speech, not enforced silence.”
I don’t do negative reviews of romances, because I usually don’t finish books that aren’t at least a B+. And because I don’t have the guts to put my name on a review that openly criticizes another book in the genre.
For those authors who do, more power to you.
Well, maybe it’s at least a baby step in the direction of honest critical discourse among authors and readers. Although it seems to me that PBR has done a wonderful job of showing how intelligent, respectful, and thoughtful less than stellar reviews written by authors can be. Six jumps backward, one tiny nudge forward . . .

I blog reviewss, and I’m a writer. It’s a steep precipace, that’s for sure. I try to say what doesn’t work for me in a straightforward manner. If I think a book is a complete stinker, I usually don’t finish it. Because these are usually contest wins (they were voted on for me to review), I feel an obligation to be honest, but the truth is, it’s already weighted towards a fairly decent book in that case. Once in a while I’ll pick something up and go for it. If I think it’s truly dreadful, I won’t review it. Hey, there’s pressure on writers not to blog about their crockpot recipes or show baby pictures. The smart thing would probably be to leave reviews to nonwriters, but I enjoy it, and enjoy sharing a good find with my readers.
