I blog reviewss, and I'm a writer. It's a steep precipace, that's for sure. I try to say what doesn't work for me in a straightforward manner. If I think a book is a complete stinker, I usually don't finish it. Because these are usually contest wins (they were voted on for me to review), I feel an obligation to be honest, but the truth is, it's already weighted towards a fairly decent book in that case. Once in a while I'll pick something up and go for it. If I think it's truly dreadful, I won't review it. Hey, there's pressure on writers not to blog about their crockpot recipes or show baby pictures. The smart thing would probably be to leave reviews to nonwriters, but I enjoy it, and enjoy sharing a good find with my readers.

Well, maybe it's at least a baby step in the direction of honest critical discourse among authors and readers. Although it seems to me that PBR has done a wonderful job of showing how intelligent, respectful, and thoughtful less than stellar reviews written by authors can be. Six jumps backward, one tiny nudge forward . . .

I don't do negative reviews of romances, because I usually don't finish books that aren't at least a B+. And because I don't have the guts to put my name on a review that openly criticizes another book in the genre.

For those authors who do, more power to you.
