Sony’s Debuts Updated EBook Reader

Sony has just officially announced its 2008 eBook Reader which will be sold at expanded Borders locations. According to the Press Release, the new Reader will retail for $300 ($50 cheaper than the original price point of the 2006 reader) and come with a USB cable, software and cover. For extra money, you can buy a pink (for girls or girly men) or black (for men or manly girls) leather cover and an AC wall adapter.
The gentlemen at MobileRead had a conference call with the Sony Rep and the PR firm to get some inside details on the new reader. The biggest thing I saw was that the new Sony Reader will have a “go to” function where you can enter the page number of the book you are reading and that you can have “Collections” on your SD Card. Collections is a fancy term for a way to organize books by author or genre or however you’d like to organize them. The Sony Reader will now be recognized as an USB Storage device making it easier for MACs owners to use the Sony.

Excellent. Maybe I’ll soon be able to get the 2006 reader really cheap ;-)

Ah, still no backlight.

Ann, it’s never going to have a backlight. It’s impossible with the e-Ink as it is. I have a cheapy booklight that works awesomely, though. Even better than having it backlit, I think.
I think I’m going to have to wait on upgrading my Reader until at least next year. I’m fairly happy with it right now, so I think I’ll wait until I have more choices for the next one.
