As you may have noticed, we use YouTube here for the hosting of our video reviews but next year, that will probably change. Gizmodo reports that YouTube will soon be adding 30 sec video ads to the beginning of video content beginning in 2008. Somehow I think that will lead to a huge decrease in video viewing, particularly in the viral video viewing where videos are embedded in blogs, like the one above that was on Dionne Galace’s today.
What a huge disappointment.

We don’t like to censor comments nor do we endorse the comments of any poster. We do reserve the right to moderate comments but most of the time will not, believing, as Justice Brandeis did, that the greater good is in “more speech, not enforced silence.”
::snort:: I figured it was only a matter of time once they were acquired by Google. How depressing. Like we’re not inundated with enough advertising every minute of every day.
30 seconds? …. You know, as much as I don’t like the idea of the ads, it might be tolerable if it was a shorter time, like 10 seconds. But no way will I sit through a 30-second ad lead in for a video.
Bastards!
There’s no way I’m spending 30 seconds on ad just to watch some video clips on the Internet.
Jane, you might want to think about using Revver.com - they do video hosting, and though they add the advertising, they share the revenue with the content creators. They have gotten good reviews from users.
I don’t mind watching ads if I know that you guys are getting some of it back! YouTube will do that in time, I’m sure…but not for everyone.
