By Jane • Sep 18th, 2007 • Category: Publishing News • •I love Sarah Dessen. . .
Sarah Ockler’s debut TWENTY BOY SUMMER, pitched as in the tradition of Ann Brashares and Sarah Dessen, following a sixteen-year-old girl with a life-shattering secret as she navigates the unfamiliar landscape of changing friendships, burgeoning sexuality, loss, and the meaning of true love, to Jennifer Hunt at Little, Brown, for six figures, in a pre-empt, for two books, by Ted Malawer at Firebrand Literary.
This sounds fascinating.

Ugh, the MILF Anthology?
Elsbeth Potter’s DUCAL SERVICE, about a 40 year-old duchess who runs off with the stable boy based on a short story published in THE MILF ANTHOLOGY (Thunder’s Mouth Press), to Susan Pezzack at Harlequin Spice, in a nice deal, in a two-book deal, for publication in 2008, by Lori Perkins (World).

The author is an actress? I wonder if that helps or hurts the sale of the book.
Actress Amber Benson’s DEATH’S DAUGHTER, the story of a young woman trying to make it as a young urban professional in NYC who slowly comes to realize that her father is actually the Grim Reaper and that she must rescue him after he’s kidnapped by unknown forces in order to save her entire family (not to mention the world), to Ginjer Buchanan at Penguin, in a very nice deal, in a three-book deal, by Brendan Deneen at Objective Entertainment.
These sound like the titles to Harlequin Spice books.

Had no idea she was so popular.
NYT bestselling author Kat Martin’s next two trilogies, contemporary romance and historical romance, to Margaret Marbury and Susan Pezzack at Mira, in a major deal, for seven figures, by Robert Gottlieb and Kimberly Whalen at Trident Media Group.
I didn’t realize the Elemental Witches was a closed series. I might try another book.

Some readers argue that Adams and Clamp aren’t writing romances. I’ve never read.

Jane is a long time romance reader whose passion is, you guessed it, reading. Jane also does not like to talk about herself in the third person, but apparently this is the way that this biography thing works (although in a true biography, someone else would be writing this blurb). Anyway, currently Jane loves urban fantasy authors Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews. She's really excited about this year's crop of historicals including Joanna Bourne's The Spymaster's Lady and Sherry Thomas' Private Arrangements and the upcoming Loretta Chase Her Scandalous Ways.
She's looking for a good contemporary author. Email her with a recommendation!

It will help her because Amber Benson!! Hello, Tara from Buffy!?
Ah, Tara? Have no idea.
I’m speechless.
I was hoping that was a tongue-in-cheek shorthand working title they used around the office that accidentally made it into the announcement, until I reread it and realized it was already published. At least it wasn’t a Harlequin title.
Wow, seven figures for six books. Then again, I’ve seen her name on the lists forever. If you separate the trilogies out it’s still…good lord. I want to be Kat Martin when I grow up!
What does MILF stand for?
Mother I’d Like to F—
OH! *blink* Thanks.
Sarah, I recommend you watch American Pie.
Tara, Willow’s girlfriend. Amber has a pretty huge following.
Yep, those are Dahl’s first contemps (she’ll still be writing historicals, too).
I’ve not read Benson, but she’s co-authored stuff with Christopher Golden–which I’ve also not read, though I’m hopeful that Golden’s an artist enough that he’d not write with her unless he thought that she’s good.
