There are a lot of problems with The Fighter. Stephanie hit the nail right on the head when she identified parallels with Fight Club. Davidson borrows shamelessly from Palahniuk's novel -- both in terms of theme and storytelling devices -- and likewise lifts clichés wholesale from every boxing movie/story ever made/written.

While occasionally Davidson makes with the pretty prose, there's a word-for-word lift from F.X. Toole's short story, "The Monkey Look," at one point, which makes me wonder what else he borrowed. The book's a real disappointment, especially since the opening chapter is such a grabber.

Sandy - I love the idea of pistols at dawn for the regency authors. Would you all delope?

Jennifer - I was due for a bit of reading outside the genre. I've read four of them now and it was a good experience. I'm definitely ready for romance but it was kind of a palatte refresher.

Stephanie - I suppose the basic premise is the same but the story is different. I thought Paul's character arc was very different than the one put forth Ed Norton.

Why does that sound an awful lot like Fight Club? Not necessarily the ending, but just the premise, that one can find oneself through <strike>the old ultra-violence</strike> such a physical and painful act of basically self-destruction.

Congratulations for stepping out of your comfort zone. This wouldn't be a book I'd pick up but I know someone who might like it.
Thank for the rundown.
You rock.

They did, like, a real boxing match? With bloody noses and all??? Now that's an interesting form of promo! And a wholly male form of promo on top of that, I guess.

I hope this is not going to be the latest trend after book trailers. Otherwise Regency authors might have to fight duels at dawn in some London park and frighten the poor ducks witless... *G*
