Publishing Deals for Upcoming Books

Just found this old post.

It’s raining assassins this fall.
Author of ‘Scuse Me While I Kill This Guy Leslie Langtry’s next two fun contemporary romances in the Bombay family of Assassins series, to Leah Hultenschmidt at Dorchester, by Kristin Nelson at Nelson Literary Agency (World).

Sounds maybe, kind of, maybe not, interesting. Am on the fence on this one.
Dan Begley’s MS. TAKEN IDENTITY, in which a failed male novelist decides to write a chick-lit novel under a female pseudonym, becoming a better man through the process and rocketing to fame and bestsellerdom, to Melanie Murray for 5 Spot, in a nice deal, by Laura Langlie (world).

Sounds very good.
Brooke Taylor’s UNDONE, in which a troubled teen fulfills the five enigmatic last wishes of her daring best friend only to discover the dark secrets of a shared past that she never knew, to Emily Easton at Walker, by Kristin Nelson at Nelson Literary Agency (NA).

Can we say, malpractice? Loss of license? Big honking lawsuit?
Mary Margret Daughtridge’s SEALed WITH A KISS, in which a “high maintenance” family therapist tries to facilitate a father/son bonding session and ends up head over heels for a hard-headed Navy SEAL, to Deb Werksman at Sourcebooks, for publication in spring 2008, by Stephany Evans of Imprint Agency.

The devil as a hero? Nah. Just not my cuppa. Where’s the world building balance?
Sheri Browning Erwin’s TO HELL WITH LOVE, in which the devil meets his match in a Boston home stager whose biological clock is ticking, for publication in fall 2007, and NAUGHTY OR NICE for publication in fall 2008, to Danielle Chiotti at Kensington, by Stephany Evans of Imprint Agency.

Straight erotica must be selling. A good deal is better than a nice deal.
Louisa Burton’s WHISPERS OF THE FLESH, a continuation of her literary erotica, set in an ancient French chateau, in the tradition of Arabian Nights and Anne Rice’s erotica, to Shauna Summers at Bantam Dell, in a good deal, a two-book deal, by Nancy Yost of Lowenstein-Yost (NA).

Jayne’s favorite author.
USA Today bestselling author Julie Kenner’s new paranormal series featuring the Assassin of Evil who believes she’s fighting for the side of good, but discovers she’s been duped by the underworld, tricked into killing those who would stand in the way of her demonic handlers, to Ginjer Buchanan at Berkley, in a three-book deal, by Kimberly Whalen at Trident Media Group (NA).

Inspirational blurbs sound very uninspiring.
Laurie Alice Eakes’ BETTER THAN GOLD, in which a couple find treasures of riches and love, to JoAnne Simmons at Barbour, in a nice deal, by Tamela Hancock Murray at Hartline Literary Agency.

See!
Kate Welsch’s untitled, to Susan Litman at Steeple Hill, by Mary Sue Seymour at The Seymour Agency.

Lisa Ruff’s THE PERFECT PITCH, to Johanna Raissen at Harlequin, by Mary Sue Seymour at The Seymour Agency.

Okay, maybe Seymour just doesn’t like writing blurbs.
Shelley Shepard’s next three books, to Cindy Ditiberio at Harper, by Mary Sue Seymour at The Seymour Agency.

Sounds interesting and provocative.
David Oppegaard’s THE SUICIDE COLLECTORS, set in the near future where ninety percent of Earth’s population has committed suicide over a period of five years in a plague of emotional ennui, and one man’s quest across the country to discover a cure, to Michael Homler at St. Martin’s, in a two-book deal, by Jonathan Lyons at Lyons Literary.

Eh, sounds very cutesy.
Lucy Finn’s IF WISHING MADE IT SO, about a lonely young woman, a second chance with her high school sweetheart, and a bottle with a genie inside - now all her dreams can come true unless a lot goes wrong with a little magic, to Kristen Weber at NAL, by John Talbot at Talbot Fortune Agency (world).

Never heard of Shelley Galloway.
Shelley Galloway’s next two books, to Johanna Raissen at Harlequin American, by Mary Sue Seymour at The Seymour Agency.

I wonder if it is easier to sell your book if you are an agent or harder?
Deidre Knight’s THE AGENCY IMMORTAL, about a band of Spartan warriors who made a deal with Ares, god of war, at Thermopylae, becoming immortal protectors of Earth - and now must battle an epic supernatural evil that threatens modern-day London, to Anne Bohner at NAL, in a nice deal, in a two-book deal, by Pamela Harty of The Knight Agency (NA).

I wonder if all her books will be BDSM?
THE DARK GARDEN author Eden Bradley’s two untitled erotic novels, to Shauna Summers at Bantam Dell, by Roberta Brown of the Brown Literary Agency (World)

Jane is a long time romance reader whose passion is, you guessed it, reading. Jane also does not like to talk about herself in the third person, but apparently this is the way that this biography thing works (although in a true biography, someone else would be writing this blurb). Anyway, currently Jane loves urban fantasy authors Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews. She's really excited about this year's crop of historicals including Joanna Bourne's The Spymaster's Lady and Sherry Thomas' Private Arrangements and the upcoming Loretta Chase Her Scandalous Ways. She's looking for a good contemporary author. Email her with a recommendation!

  1. Inspirational blurbs sound very uninspiring.

The blurb may suck, but Laurie Alice Eakes just won the National Readers Choice award for her debut book Family Guardian (it’s a Traditional Regency).

  2. On the whole, from what little information there is in these blurbs, I’m not too interested in most of them.

  3. The Suicide Collectors sounds really good to me.
