You rated it higher than I would have.

I read this book because I am a die-hard Jennie Cruisie fan and the plot-synopsis looked like it had great potential. It was a disappointing read for me. I found it unfulfilling, and annoying. There were a few good parts, but the story itself was missing huge obvious chunks in the backstory and motivation of the characters. The romances were not satisfying and the men seemed to me to be very 2-dimensional.

If it were up to me, I'd tell the authors..."Nice try, that was a good start. Now go back and re-do it and flesh out the plot and characters into something worth putting on my keeper shelf."

I thought there were a number of excellent moments, but overall the premise was unbearably silly. There wasn't enough substance there to create tension, and for all the bubbly hyperactivity of the plotting and pacing, there was little real sense of movement, character growth, etc. I didn't care what happened to any of the characters, and the only character who stirred my curiosity was Xan--because her malice was so unfathomable.

the triumph of three good young women over one bad aging woman

This crops up in several Crusie novels. Clea in Faking It, Phinn's mother in Welcome to Temptation, Brenda in Agnes and the Hitman.... She doesn't always do it, but when she does, they're horribly shallow, aging ungracefully, power-mad women who just don't make reasonable villains to me. Megalomania and vanity work as the villain's motivation in a comic strip, but it's disappointing in a Crusie novel because I find her non-villain characters so much more persuasive.

That said, I did enjoy Agnes. Releasing Unfortunate MFs and Agnes so close together makes for some interesting comparisons--Agnes reads much more like Crusie's classic thickly-layered novels that I love. (And the villain turns out to have a reasonable motive in the end. I'd have liked to see that developed earlier, as I spent half the book wondering if there was a point to all the hostility. But it did come together.)

I just read this and logged on to see what others thought. Robin - you matched my feelings exactly. I'm very familiar with Crusie and Stuart and could tell who was writing what. There was nothing new to emerge from the merging of three big talents and each character (at least Mare and Crash and Lizzie and Elric) fit the patented authorial template from previous books. A bit of a disappointment.

I'm not sure I read the same book you did! I also read it word for word and cover to cover; in one sitting I should add. I am a "diehard" Cruisie fan and "Bet Me" is my favorite of her previous titles but I see no similarity between Mare and Min. Not having ever read Eileen Dreyer and only having heard of Anne Stuart I will admit it was Crusie's efforts that drew me to the book; however you failed to mention how well the book actually works together. Not as three novellas but as one seamless book by three different authors with three very different heroines and one story. Yes, I would have liked the book to be longer but only because I didn't want it to end NOT because it was lacking.

Interesting review. I was really looking forward to this book, but now I'm less excited. I'll probably still read it, though.
