Harlequin to do Non Fiction in 2008
By Jane • May 30th, 2007 • Category: Publishing News • •Okay, so now maybe the weird publicity material that Harlequin does emphasizing romantic relationships instead of books makes sense. It announced today that it would be publishing a line of non fiction books such as self help, diet, inspirational, memior and biographies. Its first non fiction book, Friends: A Love Story by Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance was a New York Times bestseller.
The Press Release also mentioned releasing “companion pieces to successful fictional series by the company’s many bestselling authors.” I suppose those are like the “companion” guides that have been done for Outlander series and Nora Roberts.

Jane is a long time romance reader whose passion is, you guessed it, reading. Jane also does not like to talk about herself in the third person, but apparently this is the way that this biography thing works (although in a true biography, someone else would be writing this blurb). Anyway, currently Jane loves urban fantasy authors Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews. She's really excited about this year's crop of historicals including Joanna Bourne's The Spymaster's Lady and Sherry Thomas' Private Arrangements and the upcoming Loretta Chase Her Scandalous Ways.
She's looking for a good contemporary author. Email her with a recommendation!

Somewhere in my book collection I have a craft book published by Mills & Boon, a pretty old book. With the cosy mysteries with knitting and embroidery patterns and recipies I wouldn’t be surprised with them using this as well.
Debbie Macomber has her Blossom Street series that is centered around a knitting store. That seems like a perfect tie-in to me.
The Bassett/Vance book did so well (I think) because of excellent promotion. I literally saw that book everywhere, and it had some primo placement at the bookstores in my area. Also, who doesn’t love Angela Bassett? That woman kicks some serious butt.
I am pretty sure someone does knitting books now. A bookseller friend of mine buys those JUST to get the patterns.
I laugh every time ;)
