Publishing Deals for Upcoming Books

By Jane • May 7th, 2007 • Category: Publishing News • •

I bought this based on someone’s recommendation several years ago and it was very entertaining if not a little unbelievable.
Ann Herendeen’s originally self-published first novel PHYLLIDA AND THE BROTHERHOOD OF PHILANDER, a “bisexual Victorian Regency romance” that marries camp and erotica to humorous effect, to Rakesh Satyal at Harper Perennial (world). rakesh.satyal@harpercollins.com

Another POD book. Way to go.
Rights to Maryann McFadden’s originally self-published first novel THE RICHEST SEASON, about a corporate wife who runs away and settles on Pawleys Island, SC, working as a caregiver for an elderly woman, to Ellen Archer at Hyperion, with Leslie Wells editing, at auction, in a two-book deal, for publication in summer 2008, by Victoria Sanders at Victoria Sanders & Associates (world English).

I love the idea of a female Texas Ranger.
Kathryn Casey’s SINGULARITY, the first in a series featuring a Texas Ranger, whose hunt for a brutal killer threatens everything she holds dear, to Jason Pinter at Minotaur, in a three-book deal, by Jane Dystel at Dystel & Goderich Literary Management (World).

Sigh.
Karin Tabke’s next two books in her erotic suspense series, to Lauren McKenna at Pocket, by Kimberly Whalen at Trident Media Group (NA).

Sigh again.
Gerry Bartlett’s next two books in her vampire series featuring an older than dirt female vampire with a weight problem and an on again off again hunky Scottish vampire lover, to Kate Seaver at Berkley, by Kimberly Whalen at Trident Media Group (NA).

Hmm. Could be interesting but could also be horrible. Procreation is the fundamental reason for marriage right?
Debra Clopton’s A COWBOY WORTH MARRYING?, her biological clock is ticking, he doesn’t know what a clock is, can time stand still when love strikes these two opposites?, to Krista Stroever at Steeple Hill Love Inspired, in a nice deal, in a two-book deal, by Joyce A. Hart at Hartline Literary Agency (World).

For Jayne, my blogging partner.
Author of the bestselling SNOW FLOWER AND THE SECRET FAN and the forthcoming PEONY IN LOVE Lisa See’s novel set before World War II telling the story of two young Chinese girls who come to California as brides, again to Bob Loomis at Random House, in a two-book deal, by Sandy Dijkstra at Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency (NA).

Maybe a romance but listed as a fiction sale.
Christina Cordaire’s MARRIED IN BLACK, to Christine Zika at Madison Park Press, in a nice deal, by Gail Fortune of Talbot Fortune Agency (World). gailfortune@talbotfortuneagency.com

What’s with the anonymous authors?
EGO, a collaboration between an anonymous “established author” and a London-based agent, featuring an agent whose boss is found dead mysteriously, to Jennifer Weis at St. Martin’s, for publication in summer 2008, by Deborah Schneider at Gelfman Schneider, on behalf of Ali Gunn at Gunn Media.

B-b-b-b-ut what about the whole Psy/Changeling world?
SLAVE TO SENSATION and VISIONS OF HEAT author Nalini Singh’s ANGELS’ BLOOD, about a bounty hunter who retrieves runaway vampires for their angel masters, and finds herself risking her life in the most dangerous retrieval of her career, to Cindy Hwang at Berkley Sensations, in a good deal, in a two-book deal, by Nephele Tempest at The Knight Agency (NA).

Why do I think this is an erotic anthology?
Beth Kendrick’s THE PRE-NUP, about three women who have their lives turned upside down by their pre-nuptial agreements, in a two-book deal, to Danielle Perez at Bantam Dell, by Meg Ruley at Jane Rotrosen Agency (NA).

Hope these ladies get a better cover than this one or this one.
Delilah Devlin, Myla Jackson, and Layla Chase’s WILD WILD WOMEN OF THE WEST, an antholology of three erotic stories, to Hilary Sares at Kensington Aphrodesia, in a nice deal, by Bob Diforio at D4EO Literary Agency (World).

I’ve never dated a cowboy or a stripper. Clearly I needed to get around more prior to marriage.

Alyssa Brooks’s HERE I COME, the third book in the Game Series, about a woman whose heart and body are off limits until her old flame shows back up in her life as a cowboy stripper, to Leis Pederson at Berkley Heat, by Roberta Brown of the Brown Literary Agency (World)

Jane is a long time romance reader whose passion is, you guessed it, reading. Jane also does not like to talk about herself in the third person, but apparently this is the way that this biography thing works (although in a true biography, someone else would be writing this blurb). Anyway, currently Jane loves urban fantasy authors Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews. She's really excited about this year's crop of historicals including Joanna Bourne's The Spymaster's Lady and Sherry Thomas' Private Arrangements and the upcoming Loretta Chase Her Scandalous Ways. She's looking for a good contemporary author. Email her with a recommendation!

  1. PHYLLIDA AND THE BROTHERHOOD OF PHILANDER–I’ve been interested in this one for a while, but wasn’t willing to pay $25 for it. Of course Nalini Singh’s sounds interesting.

  2. Nalini said in her newsletter than she will continue to write the Changeling books.

Hurray for Lisa See! I adored her set in China mystery/suspense series.

The Casey series sounds good. I like the title, and I hope it sticks.

  3. Oh I’m very pleased for Anne and Phyllida, I’ve just started reading it, and I’m just pleased that someone’s tackled the subject. I do gay regency, so bi-sexual regency was amazing to find. I’ll let you know how accurate I find it when I finish it!

And hey, nothing wrong with professional pod’s you know.

  4. Looking forward to the Lisa See books and glad to see Nalini Singh getting a new deal.

  5. I’m definitely planning to continue writing the Psy/Changeling books. There’s so much more to explore!! :)

  6. Why do I think this is an erotic anthology?
Beth Kendrick's THE PRE-NUP, about three women who have their lives turned upside down by their pre-nuptial agreements, in a two-book deal, to Danielle Perez at Bantam Dell, by Meg Ruley at Jane Rotrosen Agency (NA)

I’m pretty sure Kendrick only writes chick lit/women’s fic…. or was that sarcasm?

  7. Can someone explain to me the hierarchy of the Publishers’ Lunch deal code? When it’s listed that a deal is “nice,” “very nice,” “good” &c., what does that mean? I’m assuming there is some numeric value associated with each descriptor, but, as someone who has no subscription to the Marketplace, I haven’t the Rosetta Stone to crack the code.

Any illumination on this would be most appreciated.

  8. The Key: “nice deal,” $1 - $49,000; “very nice deal,” $50,000 - $99,000; “good deal” $100,000 - $250,000; “significant deal,” $251,000 - $499,000; “major deal,” $500,000 and up.
