The real question behind all this, and I think it's present in the book, is at what point wisdom pushes a person to override caution, or should it ever. IMO, of course. It certainly was a tricky book to write. I was trying to stay as close as possible to the realities of the time and so the historical characters are pretty well true to character. The king really was very conservative about women (quite likely was terrified of them, secretly) and the Chevalier d'Eon was that strange. I never planned for him to be in the book, but I needed the French Ambassador for a walk-on. When I found out he was acting ambassador, I think I swore. You can't use d'Eon as a walk on!
