Today is Drop Everything and Read Day. Set on the birthday of Beverly Clearly, D.E.A.R., this day is designed to remind families of the importance of reading together on a daily basis. According to some studies, children who read are less likely to do drugs, end up in prison or drop out of school.
Some of my favorite children’s books are
-
I Love You Stinky Face where a young boy playfully challenges his mother’s claim that she loves him, no matter what, even if he was a stinky beast.
Guess How Much I Love You. While I love this book, I do think Papa Rabbit engages in the ultimate game of one-upmanship. His arms are longer. He can jump higher. He can think more creatively. He loves his bunny boy more than bunny boy loves him.
I Can Read With My Eyes Shut! Who can resist the lure of Dr. Seuss? Or the word Constantinople? You certainly can’t resist your three year old saying Jake the Pillow Snake and Foo Foo the Snoo.
Bunny Cakes (Max and Ruby) Max and Ruby make two very different cakes for Grandma and even though Max’s earthworm birthday cake makes my stomach churn, the idea of communicating with drawings instead of writing is a fun concept to impart to the tot.

You’ve got a couple of my faves here too. As much as I read to my kids and the books we have I never heard of D.E.A.R. I’m off to email my sister who still has young kids and tell her about this. BTW, Ms. Cleary was one of my personal favorites growing up.
