1 in 4 Teens Will Buy an Iphone: Will Publishers Meet this New Market?

When Steve Jobs announced the IPhone earlier this year, I was mesmerized. It looked cool and revolutionary even if it really wasn’t. I’m not alone in my IPhone lust. Piper Jaffray released a survey that showed 84% of teens are aware of the Apple Iphone and 1 in 4 are willing to lay out the Benjamins for the phone. With the increased screen space, this is a perfect device on which teens can read ebooks.

The challenge is that so many of the young adult novels are not in ebook format. Even publishers such as Harper Collins and Simon & Schuster who have really put a lot of emphasis on digitization aren’t catering to the teen market. With Young Adult reading on the rise, shouldn’t the publishers meet that need in a digital way?

Whoa – I thought that the iPhone didn’t have an ebook reader and Jobs doesn’t want to open it up to 3rd party applications because ??? Plus, I heart the iPhone in theory but I would want to try an ebook reader on a device with no control keys before putting any cash on the line.

OTOH – more YA ebooks – oh yeah. My daughter would love it.
