Victoria Beckham, Who Has Never Read a Book, to Start a Book Club

Now, don’t get me wrong. I am not a hater of Victoria Beckham. I have three pairs of Rock n Republic Beckham jeans which I love. They are very comfortable. But a book club started by a woman who bragged to the Spanish press while promoting her autobiography that she has never read a book her entire life, including her own, sounds a bit suspicious. Do we even know that she can read let alone engage in a discussion about an entire novel.
I’m all for stars using their fame to promote literature, like Jon Stewart on the Daily Show, but when he recommends a book, I actually believe that he has read it. She did tell the press that she likes fashion magazines so perhaps Margaret & Lizz Weiss’ name brand novel would be right up her alley. Heck, maybe she’ll single-handedly bring chick lit back into vogue.

Jane is a long time romance reader whose passion is, you guessed it, reading. Jane also does not like to talk about herself in the third person, but apparently this is the way that this biography thing works (although in a true biography, someone else would be writing this blurb). Anyway, currently Jane loves urban fantasy authors Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews. She's really excited about this year's crop of historicals including Joanna Bourne's The Spymaster's Lady and Sherry Thomas' Private Arrangements and the upcoming Loretta Chase Her Scandalous Ways.
She's looking for a good contemporary author. Email her with a recommendation!

When I heard this little tidbit I just about curled up and died. I’m all for someone converting non-readers over to the joy of the book, but this is wrong on so many different levels. In fact, I think whomever she chooses for her club to read is doomed as an author.
I think I read somewhere that she claims to have misquoted. Not an impossibility since she doesn’t speak Spanish. If I find a link, I’ll post it.
A woman who bragged to never reading a book….now she wants to start her own book club? Pleazzzzzzzzzzzze. Give me strength.
Are you sure it’s a campaign to promote literature and not literacy? One of those “if I can learn so can you” type of things? And why *should* she be daunted in pursuing a new career as an intellectual role model? Remember when the current president bragged to graduating Yale students that he had been a C student at Yale? Maybe we’re adopting a new meaning for the term “middle class,” since the old one seems to be disappearing so rapidly.
