Starting today, all Tivo subscribers with a Series 2 or Series 3 Tivo box can now download movies via Amazon. The movie rentals start at $1.99 and can be purchased for $9.99 and up. TV episodes can be purchased for $1.99.
If you sign up before April 30, you can get a $15 credit.
As for titles, Amazon has agreements with CBS and Fox for TV and Lionsgate, Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Warner Bros for movies.
This is just another reason why publishers need to have digital content to compete for the entertainment attention of the public. If everything but books is available one click and a download away, why wouldn’t we choose to watch a movie for convenience sakes when the weather, illness or pure laziness prevents us from going to the store.
Edited to add: Acocrding to the fresh off the internet press release, Sony and MGM have also signed agreements to be part of the Tivo/Amazon alliance. Tivo uses a progressive download system whereby the movie or tv show downloads as you watch so that most customers can start watching “any Unbox TV show or movie within five minutes of ordering.”

I have been waiting for this. Keeping my Netflix queue full seems to be another full-time job and as often as not I end up getting movies home I don’t even watch. I will be one of the very first subscribers to this service. I already have a deep and fulfilling relationship with my TiVo and this will just cement the bond.
