Barbara Delinksy Disavows Romance Writing Past

In an interview with the Globe, Barbara Delinsky disavows her romance writing past, refusing to discuss it with the interviewer. Nice. Am adding her to the list of Authors Behaving Badly. Come on, Delinsky, you built your career on romance readers. At least acknowledge that they exist. Via HelenKay Dimon’s blog.

I read that, and thought it was pretty shabby behaviour from her. I thought about adding her to the list, but realised that there’s plenty of authors like her around who are ashamed of their roots. I got some of her books from the library about a year ago, but I couldn’t get past the first page. I don’t think I’m the Women’s Fiction type.

I never got the attraction, but so much of her base are romance readers. It’s quite the insult, shame on you Ms. Delinsky.

It’s a shame she can’t feel respect at least for the genre that gave her her start. I liked a couple of her older straight romances, which I stumbled across at a library sale. But nothing that she’s published in the last 10 years or so has been impressive — it’s blah women’s fiction in my mind. I don’t know that I would list any of the books I’ve read by her in my top ten or even top hundred or thousand best books.
