[...] I think that she is saying that she writes to please her own muse and that the story renders itself. There is magic in the writing as there is in the reading and because some books evoke the phenomena of full suspension of disbelief (in my case, Naomi Novik’s book) then all writing is art and not to be subjected to petty concerns such as cost, editing, or even authorial behavior.
I'm currently reading this book now. I skipped your review of Wolf Who Rules by Spencer - afraid to read it.

I bought this one last week because of the rave reviews I was seeing on SF sites. Can't wait to dive into it, but not sure if I'll wait until all three are out or not.

I thought that the dragons were the only "other" in Novik's alternative history fantasy and that they were just a part of life like horses. It will be interesting to see where the series goes from China to Istanbul. I read a couple of reviews on a sci fi site when I was googling novik and the reviews stated that all books were as good, if not better than the first and that the last one, in particular, deals more with political intrigue.

The really cool thing about this series is that the books in the trilogy are coming out a month apart. I've pre-ordered my future copies because the first book sold out right away.

I do have one tiny quibble. If there have been dragons in this world for ages, how could it so closely parallel ours?

In spite of that, I did like the book quite a bit. The preview of book 2 on Novik's website is about a battle. I found the battle a bit boring, preferring character interactions. I reallly hope the other books don't focus on battles!!

WOW, Jane liked fight scenes! Whoopeee! Now you just need to watch a few good Errol Flynn movies, the final battle scenes in Return of the King and we'll totally convert you. Perhaps even to the point of changing your bio here? <vbg>
