Darkness Awakened by Katie ReusDarkness Awakened by Katie Reus. $ .99

**99 cent SALE, limited time only! TWO weeks before it will return to its regular price of $2.99!**

From New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author Katie Reus, the first story in her Darkness series.

Years ago he ended things between them to protect her…

As leader of one of the fiercest werewolf packs in the south, Finn Stavros is in full battle mode 24/7. He has no choice—he’s one of the few beings strong enough to fight the Akkadian demons, whose mysterious escape from hell threatens the entire world. With the battle turning bloodier by the second, Finn is ready for anything…until his vampire long lost love shows up on his doorstep in desperate need of his help, sending his heart into a tailspin. He agrees to help her, unaware that she carries a shocking secret that will turn his life upside down.

This time, he’s not letting her go…

Vampire Lyra Marius curses the day she met Finn. The ruthless werewolf promised to love her forever, but he rejected her instead—before she could share her life altering news. Pregnant, kicked out of her coven, and cast aside by the love of her life, Lyra struggled to raise their rare shifter-vampire daughter Vega alone among humans. When the 16-year-old is kidnapped and used to fulfill a frightening prophecy, Lyra swallows her pride and turns to Finn for help. But how long can she fight her feelings for him and keep him from guessing the truth about who Vega really is? As they race against the clock to save their daughter, they must defeat the lethal threat imposed by demons infiltrating the human world and a hell gate that could not only reveal their existence to mankind, but destroy the world in the process.

Darkness Series, #1
Length: 50,000 words

The lower ratings knocked the book for lack of character depth. Perhaps part of the problem is length? It’s 50,000 words but others felt it was the start of a good series and the hero is a sweet alpha male.

Pump Six and Other Stories by Paolo BacigalupiPump Six and Other Stories by Paolo Bacigalupi. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

Paolo Bacigalupi’s debut collection demonstrates the power and reach of the science fiction short story. Social criticism, political parable, and environmental advocacy lie at the center of Paolo’s work. Each of the stories herein is at once a warning, and a celebration of the tragic comedy of the human experience.

The eleven stories in Pump Six represent the best Paolo’s work, including the Hugo nominee “Yellow Card Man,” the nebula and Hugo nominated story “The People of Sand and Slag,” and the Sturgeon Award-winning story “The Calorie Man.”

One review said “The storytelling is lush and skillful. The characters are NOT the run-of-the-mill white, middle-class Americans you so often end up seeing… but are still so convincingly written that you empathize with them anyway. The future dystopia is clearly and thoughfully constructed without being the same old same old with a fresh coat of paint.

The problem I had is that many of the stories were… depressing. “

With over eight million books in print, award–winning author Roberta Gellis sets the standard for captivating medieval romance filled with passion and pageantry.

While this isn’t a recently published book, it is one that speaks to Kaetrin’s Tuesday article about the overabundance of dukes. The Rope Dancer features a cast of common people who did not live in luxury but still fell in love.

This author’s name sounds vaguely familiar to me. I’m intrigued by the storyline though and will buy it. A recent review, though, says formatting is pretty bad with dialogue running together making it difficult to decipher who was speaking.

A friend of mine told me this is one of Reyes best books yet. The friend is a picky, picky romance reader so I’m enthused to give this a shot.

How to Love by Katie CotugnoHow to Love by Katie Cotugno. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

For fans of Sarah Dessen and John Green, How to Love is a breathtaking debut about a couple who falls in love . . . twice.

Before: Reena Montero has loved Sawyer LeGrande for as long as she can remember. But he’s never noticed that Reena even exists . . . until one day, impossibly, he does. Reena and Sawyer fall in messy, complicated love. But then Sawyer disappears without a word, leaving a devastated—and pregnant—Reena behind.

After: Almost three years have passed, and there’s a new love in Reena’s life: her daughter. Reena’s gotten used to life without Sawyer, but just as suddenly as he disappeared, he turns up again. Reena wants nothing to do with him, though she’d be lying if she said his being back wasn’t stirring something in her.

After everything that’s happened, can Reena really let herself love Sawyer LeGrande again?

I’m a big fan of Sarah Dessen and while I view Green as the Nicholas Sparks of the YA genre, he’s a competent writer. (Kind of in the Dawson Creek precociousness sort of way). The negative reviews didn’t buy into either character. Some hated Reena for being too passive and accepting of the treatment of Sawyer, a drug addicted, pill popping wastrel but the writing was beautiful per even the negative reviews. It appears to be a beautifully described train wreck which compels you forward even against your better judgment. Hey, you’re just like Reena and the book is the bad boy that keeps treating you awfully but you still return for me. I have those book boyfriends too.

“Hi, I’m the guy who reads your e-mail, and also, I love you . . . ”

Beth Fremont and Jennifer Scribner-Snyder know that somebody is monitoring their work e-mail. (Everybody in the newsroom knows. It’s company policy.) But they can’t quite bring themselves to take it seriously. They go on sending each other endless and endlessly hilarious e-mails, discussing every aspect of their personal lives.

Meanwhile, Lincoln O’Neill can’t believe this is his job now- reading other people’s e-mail. When he applied to be “internet security officer,” he pictured himself building firewalls and crushing hackers- not writing up a report every time a sports reporter forwards a dirty joke.

When Lincoln comes across Beth’s and Jennifer’s messages, he knows he should turn them in. But he can’t help being entertained-and captivated-by their stories.

By the time Lincoln realizes he’s falling for Beth, it’s way too late to introduce himself.

What would he say . . . ?

Jayne gave this book a strong B+ recommendation.

I fell for Beth for the same reasons that Lincoln does. She’s bright, funny, caring of her friends and family despite being forced into Bad Bridesmaid Dress number two. Or was it three? This part of the book has an almost chick lit feel to it as Jennifer and Beth gripe and moan and support each other through the ups and downs of their lives. Despite the fact that we don’t “see” Beth in person in the narrative until late in the book didn’t detract from my feeling that I knew her as well as Lincoln.

I bought it. I’m going to read it.
