She’s amazed she doesn’t end up as his dinner—are there actuallygood vampires? Pretty soon Bones will have her convinced that being half-dead doesn’t have to be all bad. But before she can enjoy her newfound status as kick-ass demon hunter, Cat and Bones are pursued by a group of killers. Now Cat will have to choose a side . . . and Bones is turning out to be as tempting as any man with a heartbeat.

Ordinarily I try to avoid Amazon only deals but this one is too good not to pass along. The Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost is on sale for $1.99 each as part of the Kindle Daily Deal. This started off as “what if Buffy hooked up Spike” sort of story and went on from there. (That’s my interpretation – not that it was ever fan fiction) Made Frost a huge bestselling author.

Deftly blends elements of Steampunk and vampire romance with brilliantly successful results…darkly atmospheric and delectably sexy.”—Booklist Starred Review for Kiss of Steel

In the mist-shrouded streets of a steam-fueled London, a clockwork army is on the rise, vampire blue bloods rule the streets, and war is brewing…

I Will Come For You…

He will find her no matter what. As a blue-blooded captain of the Nighthawk Guard, his senses are keener than most. Some think he’s indestructible. But once he finds the elusive Mercury, what will he do with her?

It’s his duty to turn her in—she’s a notorious spy and traitor. But after one stolen moment, he can’t forget the feel of her in his arms, the taste of her, or the sharp sting of betrayal as she slipped off into the night. Little does Mercury know, no one hunts better than the Nighthawk. And his greatest revenge will be to leave her begging for his touch…

I’ve read the first two and liked the first one better than the second but I think that was more due to my own expectations than the book itself.

Pierce is still as stubborn, sexy, and arrogant as ever . . . but Lace is about to see that things aren’t always as they seem . . . especially whenit comes to love.

Don't Let Go by Sharla Lovelace.Don’t Let Go by Sharla Lovelace. $ .99.

From the Jacket Copy:

Noah Ryan and Jules Doucette spent every moment together, first as best friends and later as young lovers. The two had planned a life together—until one unspeakable decision tore them apart for good.

Twenty-six years later, Jules is still carefully living the life her mother planned out for her. She’s running her mother’s store, living in her mother’s house, following her mother’s rules, and keeping the secrets her mother made her bury.

Then Noah comes home and any sense of an ordered life flies out the window. Noah’s return does more than just stir up old memories—it forces Jules to see her life in a whole new way and uncovers secrets even she didn’t know were buried. Secrets that could easily destroy her world once more.

I thought I’d featured this book before but I couldn’t find it in a quick search of the archives. Readers have compared it to Deb Smith’s A Place to Call Home and Katherine Allred’s Sweet Gum Tree.

How to Catch a Wild Viscount by Tessa DareHow to Catch a Wild Viscount by Tessa Dare. $ FREE

From the Jacket Copy:

She’s on the hunt for a hero…

Luke Trenton, Viscount Merritt, returned from war a changed man. Battle stripped away his civility and brought out his inner beast. There is no charm or tenderness in him now; only dark passions and a hardened soul. He has nothing to offer the starry-eyed, innocent girl who pledged her heart to him four years ago.

But Cecily Hale isn’t a girl any longer. She’s grown into a woman—one who won’t be pushed away. She and Luke are guests at a house party when a local legend captures their friends’ imaginations. While the others plunge into the forest on a wild goose…er, stag chase, Cecily’s on the hunt for a man. She has only a few moonlit nights to reach the real Luke…the wounded heart she knows still beats inside the war-ravaged body…or she could lose him to the darkness forever.

This is a novella of approximately 20,000 words, or 80 pages. It was originally published under the title The Legend of the Werestag.

I honestly can’t remember how the joke got started, but there was something about Courtney Milan trademarking all books involving wereruminants. After Tessa Dare published a novella called Legend of a Werestag. I gave it a B+.

I was even amazed that there was a secondary romance slipped underneath the heat and tension of Lucas and Cecily. But even more than the story, it was the writing. The story was so smoothly told with rich evocative descriptions and the use of dialogue to convey love, longing, and wistful regret; showing the reader the true motives and feelings of the characters rather than telling us. I particularly appreciated the elegance that was displayed during the sex scenes making those scenes sexy and beautiful but not boorish. It’s easy to get lost in the world of Tessa Dare’s writing. B+

Blackberry Wine by Joanne HarrisBlackberry Wine by Joanne Harris. $ 1.99 at AMZN | Apple

From the Jacket Copy:

As a boy, writer Jay Mackintosh spent three golden summers in the ramshackle home of “Jackapple Joe” Cox. A lonely child, he found solace in Old Joe’s simple wisdom and folk charms. The magic was lost, however, when Joe disappeared without warning one fall.

Years later, Jay’s life is stalled with regret and ennui. His bestselling novel, Jackapple Joe, was published ten years earlier and he has written nothing since. Impulsively, he decides to leave his urban life in London and, sight unseen, purchases a farmhouse in the remote French village of Lansquenet. There, in that strange and yet strangely familiar place, Jay hopes to re-create the magic of those golden childhood summers. And while the spirit of Joe is calling to him, it is actually a similarly haunted, reclusive woman who will ultimately help Jay find himself again.

This is the author that wrote Chocolat. PW wrote about this book “Despite some unbelievable twists and a slightly uneven pace…it begins slowly, but by the last quarter races ahead…this is an entertaining narrative, equal parts whimsy and drama. “

Fingersmith by Sarah Waters.Fingersmith by Sarah Waters. $ 2.99 at AMZN | Apple.

From the Jacket Copy:

Sue Trinder is an orphan, left as an infant in the care of Mrs. Sucksby, a “baby farmer,” who raised her with unusual tenderness, as if Sue were her own. Mrs. Sucksby’s household, with its fussy babies calmed with doses of gin, also hosts a transient family of petty thieves—fingersmiths—for whom this house in the heart of a mean London slum is home.

One day, the most beloved thief of all arrives—Gentleman, an elegant con man, who carries with him an enticing proposition for Sue: If she wins a position as the maid to Maud Lilly, a naïve gentlewoman, and aids Gentleman in her seduction, then they will all share in Maud’s vast inheritance. Once the inheritance is secured, Maud will be disposed of—passed off as mad, and made to live out the rest of her days in a lunatic asylum.

With dreams of paying back the kindness of her adopted family, Sue agrees to the plan. Once in, however, Sue begins to pity her helpless mark and care for Maud Lilly in unexpected ways…But no one and nothing is as it seems in this Dickensian novel of thrills and reversals

Shortlisted for the 2002 Booker Prize.
2002 Lambda Literary Award Finalist, Lesbian Fiction

The critical reviews say this book is light entertainment but maybe not an award winner. However, again, worth the sale price.
