To Ruin A Queen: An Ursula Blanchard Mystery at Queen Elizabeth I's Court Fiona BuckleyTo Ruin A Queen: An Ursula Blanchard Mystery at Queen Elizabeth I’s Court by Fiona Buckley. $ 1.99 at AMZN | Apple

From the Jacket Copy:

Her devotion to her family trumps all.

Homesick for England, heartsick at being separated from her young daughter, Ursula Blanchard is struggling to build a new life in France with her husband, Matthew de la Roche. Ursula is devastated when she learns Meg has disappeared from the family that has fostered her since the French civil war forced Ursula to leave her behind. A wanted man in England, Matthew is unable to accompany her as she frantically journeys home.

Upon her arrival, Ursula is stunned to learn that Meg is not missing, but has been sent at the Queen’s behest to Vetch Castle, the home of Philip Mortimer, descendant of Roger Mortimer, who was executed long ago for his part in the murder of Edward II. Ursula treads carefully as she seeks the truth about Philip Mortimer’s schemes to force the Queen to restore his family’s fortunes. But when a murderer strikes, she is quickly ensnared in a web of blackmail and treason that could topple the crown — and cost Ursula her life.

Fiona Buckley’s historical fiction books are priced quite high and this sale is unusual per the commenter who posted this on one of the discount boards I monitor.

Nine by Jan Burke.Nine by Jan Burke. $ 1.99 at AMZN | Apple

From the Jacket Copy:

On the heels of her soaring bestseller Flight, Edgar Award-winning author Jan Burke reaches new heights of suspense in this ingenious novel of hard-hitting justice and cold-blooded murder.

Los Angeles County Homicide Detective Alex Brandon lives to bring killers to justice — but when unknown assailants begin systematically killing off the FBI’s Most Wanted suspects, Alex sees no cause for celebration. The vigilante slayings eerily echo the work of a serial killer from a decade ago, and convince Alex that “the Exterminators,” as a grateful public has dubbed them, are more ruthless and sadistic than their victims. As the attacks mount, it is the ninth target that pulls Alex into a case that is quickly spiraling into deadly territory — where justice is no longer enough.

I loved the Irene Kelly series. Back in the day (probably late1990s and early 2000s) I read a tony of mystery/thrillers/police detective stories. Irene Kelly was a great protagonist and Burke wrote a nice little romance over the series. I stopped reading her mostly because my interests changed. This is the first the Alex Hartwick series. It won an award and BN calls it original and suspenseful.

Her Kind of Trouble by Sarah MayberryHer Kind of Trouble by Sarah Mayberry. $ 2.99 AMZN | Apple

From the Jacket Copy:

It takes one to know one

The moment Vivian Walker spies Seth Anderson she knows they’re a match made in hedonistic pleasure. And they both agree their one night together is all about fun, not forever.

Now, years later, Seth remains a favorite memory. Surely the sizzling chemistry has faded, though, right? Apparently not. Because he’s still sinfully attractive, and she likes the man he is. When he suddenly becomes a full-time dad to his newborn daughter, Vivian falls hard. Yet despite the responsibilities, he’s not a good bet for commitment. And she needs to guard her heart before she gets into trouble!

Willaful gives this a B+.

Her Kind of Trouble is about growth and maturity and the ways people change — and the ways they stay the same. In the opening chapter, aspiring fashion designer Vivian meets her new brother-in-law by marriage at her sister’s wedding, and instantly recognizes a rebellious, good-time-seeking kindred spirit in Seth. A very sexy kindred spirit. Over champagne and a joint (Oh Harlequin! I hardly know you!), they share a passionate interlude in a limo, and then cheerfully part.

Reviewers who liked the book pointed to the deft handling of the interracial relationship as well as how the families meshed.

This first one is for Jayne who really enjoys Cantrell. For some reason this is an Amazon only deal.

Ten by Gretchen McNeilTen by Gretchen McNeil. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

Don’t spread the word! Three-day weekend. House party.
White Rock House on Henry Island.
You do not want to miss it.

It was supposed to be the weekend of their lives—three days on Henry Island at an exclusive house party. Best friends Meg and Minnie each have their own reasons for wanting to be there, which involve their school’s most eligible bachelor, T. J. Fletcher, and look forward to three glorious days of boys, bonding, and fun-filled luxury.

But what they expect is definitely not what they get, and what starts out as fun turns dark and twisted after the discovery of a DVD with a sinister message: Vengeance is mine.

Suddenly, people are dying, and with a storm raging outside, the teens are cut off from the rest of the world. No electricity, no phones, no internet, and a ferry that isn’t scheduled to return for three days. As the deaths become more violent and the teens turn on each other, can Meg find the killer before more people die? Or is the killer closer to her than she could ever imagine?

As my daughter’s teen years fast approach, I’m making a list of things I should and should not let her do. I think a three-day weekend house party is a no brainer. Also, I’m not entirely sure what is the protocol for escaping the bad guys any longer. Is it run into the house or out of the house?

School Library Journal writes “Though character development and motivation are a bit weak, McNeil’s novel nicely parallels Agatha Christie’s classic And Then There Were None (originally titled Ten Little Indians in the United States), and is likewise a quick-paced thriller full of half-facts and red herrings that take readers through the twists and turns of a deadly weekend. While it might not be considered an amazing teen mystery, among the numerous adaptations and stories that borrow from Christie’s 1939 novel, McNeil’s book holds its own.”

Burning Through Gravity by Addison MooreBurning Through Gravity
by Addison Moore. $ .99

From the Jacket Copy:

BURNING THROUGH GRAVITY-they soared so high so fast they never expected the fall.
Two beautiful souls.
Two seemingly innocent deceptions.

Once they meet, Stevie and Ford explode into one another in a ball of lust, hotter than a July moon. Ford is assertive, dominate and in control, that is until Stevie brings him to his knees. He thinks she’s the most beautiful woman he’s ever met both inside and out. Stevie thinks he’s sweet, and sort of goofy-of course it doesn’t hurt that he drips sex like honey.

Stevie is starting to fall hard for Ford.
And Ford is all in with Stevie.
She wonders if he could ever forgive her for what she’s about to do.
She wonders if she wants him to.

They say love conquers all.
But love never met two liars like Stevie and Ford.

His lie cost her a few sleepless nights.
Her lie will cost him everything.

I’ve read two or three Addison Moore books and while they lack a certain sense of believability at times, I’ve enjoyed the ones I read. I haven’t read this one but I did buy it. I’m not a huge fan of lying conflicts. That’s kind of a hard line for me so I honestly don’t know if I’ll read it. Yet, because I have this sick compulsion…

Out of Reach by Missy JohnsonOut of Reach by Missy Johnson. $ .99

From the Jacket Copy:

My best friend was dying and I was in love with his girl.
Andy and I had been best friends since we were eight-years old. Watching him slowly fade away, ever closer to his final breath, made me so incredibly angry. I knew there was nothing I could do to change it–I had given in to despair, but Andy had not. He had one last hand to play.

He wasn’t going to simply sit back and wait for Death to claim him–not Andy. He was going to live life until he couldn’t hold his eyes open any longer.

Andy didn’t want to die in some sterile hospital and asked me to take him and Emily to the beach. It would be our last road trip together.

Emily. Emily was a problem for me.

I harbored a secret that would have torn our friendship apart. I was in love with Andy’s girl, and had been since she’d walked into our sixth grade class, so many years ago.

So what kind of person am I? My best friend is dying, and it’s awful–but my heart still aches for his girl. I hate myself for thinking beyond Andy’s death and whether there could ever be a future for Emily and I, but I can’t help it.

I’m in love with her.

Probably the biggest problem I would have with this book was how it could be resolved while Andy was still alive. Would the girlfriend really start having feelings for the best friend while her long time boyfriend was dying? Could the author pull it off? For some readers, it didn’t work. Others said that they expected more emotion from such an angsty blurb.

Access All Areas by Alice SeverinAccess All Areas by Alice Severin. $ .99.

From the Jacket Copy:

Lily Taylor’s life has been transformed twice – once by the music she loves, and then by the chance to make a career following her passion – writing about the business. But when she gets the biggest break of her career so far, an interview with the infamous Tristan Hunter, a rock star with a talent for trouble, Lily isn’t sure what to expect. Even though she’s always admired him, Tristan has a reputation for being difficult…and demanding.

Yet Tristan turns out to be just as electrifying in person as he is on stage, and the powerful connection between them is undeniable. Now the fiercely independent Lily finds herself caught up in a whirlwind of sexual desire that forces her to question everything she believes – and she’ll have to decide just how far she is willing to go for the answers…

This is a three book series, all on sale for 99c. There are mentions of editing problems and story continuity issues. It sounds like the three books maybe should have undergone a serious edit and been one or two. Nonetheless if you are a fan of rock star books, you may be interested. And yes, that’s a sketchy homemade cover.
