Thursday News: The Authors Guild’s appeal, Underrated movies, below-stairs stories, Alice...

“In a statement following the decision, Authors Guild executive director Paul Aiken told PW that Chin’s decision represented “a fundamental challenge to copyright that merits review by a higher court.” Aiken claims that Google’s unauthorized mass digitization and exploitation far exceeds the bounds of the fair use defense.”” Publishers Weekly

“Sayles gives his actors nuanced characters to play — Bernice goes from ball-busting parole officer to heartbroken mother — and he coaxes flinty performances out of his three marvelous leads. The script is laced with humor, and contains savvy observations about being careful when doing favors for people, and how one’s choices in life inform who someone is. As each character takes risks, crossing personal boundaries as well as legal borders — both literal and figurative — viewers will become invested as to what will pay off for whom.”Salon

“Woolf wasn’t the only one to “blue-pencil” out the servants. While literature is filled with famous governesses—Brontë’s Jane Eyre, Thackeray’s Becky Sharp, and the unnamed narrator in James’s “The Turn of the Screw,” to name a few—the same isn’t true for housemaids.”The New Yorker

“It is a beautiful and sensitive presentation of Carroll’s book featuring the art of twelve post-Tenniel illustrators.  The ebook can be enjoyed as a conventional read (on a tablet, that is), you can peruse the art alone, listen to it, but best of all are the animations which combine art and story fabulously.” Huffington Post

The three following books are $1.99 deals I thought would interest you. The first is a YA that features a (according to the blurb) funny, sardonic narrator. Ironically, Snuff is $1.99 in ebook form at Amazon but $3.99 in hardcover at BN.

The Dark Heroine: Dinner with a Vampire by Abigail GibbsThe Dark Heroine by Abigail Gibbs. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

One moment can change your life forever. . . .

A chance encounter on a darkened street draws Violet Lee into a world beyond her wildest imaginings—a timeless place of vast elegance and immeasurable wealth, of beautiful mansions and lavish parties, where a decadent group of vampires lives for pleasure alone. A place from which there is no escape . . . no matter how hard Violet tries.

Because all the riches in the world can’t mask the darkness that lies beneath the gilded surface, embodied in the charismatic but dangerous Kaspar Varn.

Violet and Kaspar surrender to a passion that transcends their separate worlds—but it’s a passion that comes at a price.

I remember receiving so many promotional emails and mailings about this book. The author had this huge Wattpad presence but it never translated into big sales. The GR review rating is 3.8 and the reviews are all over the place from “compelling” to “it shows that it was written by a 15 year old.”

I do have a hard time believing that a 15 year old would write the sexiest romance all year as the little badge says on the cover.

Alpha Instinct: A Moon Shifter Novel by Katie ReusAlpha Instinct by Katie Reus . $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

Ana Cordona has been a strong leader for the lupine shifters who survived after all the males and most of the females in her pack were mysteriously poisoned. As tough as she is, with no Alpha male, the pack is vulnerable to the devious shifter Sean Taggart, who wants to claim both their ranch and Ana as his own. When Connor Armstrong comes back into her life, promising protection, it’s almost enough to make Ana forget how he walked out on her before—and reluctantly accept his offer to mate.

The minute Connor sees Ana again, it reawakens a raw hunger. He must have her for his bondmate—his wolf cries out for it. But his human side knows he must proceed with caution because of their complicated past. If he is to truly have her body and soul, he must go beyond his burning desire and win back her heart. Whatever it takes, he is determined not to leave her side again. But Taggart and his rival pack are not their only enemies. A human element in town is targeting shifters. Their plan not only threatens Ana and Connor’s future, but the lives of the entire pack…

I can’t remember if I read this book or not. It looks familiar…Oh yes, and apparently it didn’t work for me. I think it was because I wanted the female to act stronger and she never did but Reus is a pretty popular author (and one of the more successful indies) so maybe there’s something there you, the reader, may enjoy.

The Next Always (Inn BoonsBoro Trilogy #1) by Nora RobertsThe Next Always by Nora Roberts. $ 3.99

From the Jacket Copy:

“America’s favorite writer” (The New Yorker) begins an all-new trilogy-inspired by the inn she owns and the town she loves.

The historic hotel in BoonsBoro, Maryland, has endured war and peace, changing hands, even rumored hauntings. Now it’s getting a major facelift from the Montgomery brothers and their eccentric mother. As the architect of the family, Beckett’s social life consists mostly of talking shop over pizza and beer. But there’s another project he’s got his eye on: the girl he’s been waiting to kiss since he was fifteen…

This isn’t my favorite Nora Roberts straight contemporary. I felt like there was too much home and garden stuff and not enough relationship and emotional connection between the characters.

Highland Warrior (Campbell Trilogy #1) by Monica McCartyHighland Warrior by Monica McCarty. $ 1.99.

From the Jacket Copy:

The ruthless enforcer of Scotland’s most powerful clan, Jamie Campbell will use any means necessary to vanquish lawlessness and unrest among the feuding Highland clans. Seduction is a game as easily played as subterfuge, but when Jamie poses as a suitor to a rival clan’s daughter in order to expose treason, the line between duty and pleasure is suddenly blurred. Ebony-haired, ruby-lipped Caitrina Lamont defies him, denies him, and arouses him like no other woman.Caitrina has no intention of forsaking her beloved father and doting brothers for a husband—especially a hated Campbell. But Jamie’s raw, sensual strength and searing kiss melt her resistance. When her idyllic world is shattered, Caitrina’s only hope to save her clan lies in the arms of Jamie Campbell, the enemy she holds accountable for its ruin. Can their tenuous truce, born in the velvet darkness of passionate nights, forge a love as strong as the sword that rules the Highlands?

I’m picking this one up as part of my pledge to read more historicals in 2014. I haven’t read McCarty in a while but it’s the start of a new trilogy and the blurb kind of highlights things I’ve enjoyed about Scottish historicals in the past.
