Online Movies Set to Overtake DVDs and Blu-rays – eMarketer – One of the reasons I banged the ebook drum for so long was because all of media was moving toward online consumption.
This year, US customers have begun using online movie services, either via download or streaming, in greater numbers that physical media in the form of DVDs or Blurays. According to Screen Digest’s analysis, US audience members consumed 1.4 billion units of online movies in 2011. That is expected to reach 3.4 billion units in 2012. Views of physical movie discs, including retail sales and rentals of VHS, DVD and Blu-ray discs, will drop from 2.6 billion units in 2011 to 2.4 billion units in 2012.eMarketer
New copyright center ready to fire on pirates (exclusive) | Media Maverick – CNET News – SOPA and PIPA might be dead but the major studios and record labels don’t need congressional assistance because they’ve made deals with the ISPs. They believe that since ISPs are the gatekeepers of the Internet, they are in best position to thwart illegal file sharing.
A graduated-response program is supposed to begin with the ISPs sending a series of letters to customers who are flagged for allegedly downloading pirated songs or films. The letters will endeavor to educate the accused that downloading unauthorized content is illegal. The ISPs will then gradually begin ratcheting up the pressure for those who are alleged to have committed multiple piracy infractions”
Note the word “alleged”. The ISP will not have to prove that you did anything wrong, only that you are alleged to be a perpetrator. CNET

Hearst, Conde Nast, Meredith Launch “Netflix For Magazines” – Peter Kafka – Media – AllThingsD – Usually it is iOS (the iThings) that get all the cool toys first, but alas, probably because of Apple’s demand for 30% of in app purchasing, the Netflix for magazines has launched on the Android platform only and currently not available on the Kindle Fire or BN Nook. Next Issue Media offers all the magazines you want for a flat fee of $10 or $15 per month. There are 32 titles available but the titles are some of the best in the business such as Sports Illustrated, Vanity Fair, Elle, People, Better Homes & Gardens.

I love ebooks for the digital format. And I have watched a tv show or two on-line. But I much prefer to buy DVDs. When I buy a film it’s with the idea I will watch it more than once.
Scary to think they can just cut off one’s access to the internet without proof of wrong doing. But I am curious why only the end user is being targeted. Why don’t the ISPs go after the folks who allegedly upload the pirated content?

I love all the baseball books, just in time for opening day! I haven’t read Posnanski’s but I think he’s a terrific writer for the most part. I used to read him when he was on the sports desk at the KC Star.
I went to buy the Steve Kluger book (I’ll read anything he writes) but Amazon has it pulled (temporarily I hope) because of some glitch. Fingers crossed they get it back.

The weird thing is still going on w/ the Steve Kluger book on Amazon. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a notice like that.
There’s actually a different Amazon listing for Reckless (Andrew Gross) that’s $.99. I hate it when they have separate listings; when you check on the regular one later, it’ll look as if you haven’t already bought the book. (Not that I ever forget books that I’ve bought!)

I imagine a huge percentage of the pirated material is on servers overseas, so US law can’t reach them. Not only do you have the criminal pirates, but according to a presentation that either DA or SBTB posted on some book conference, most universities in third world countries have vast libraries of pirated material because their students can’t afford text books. (And always have had, before they were produced by Xerox machines). Countries where university student rely on pirated texts to get an education are not going to work that hard at eliminating piracy. Further, while raids are easy and show the US that the country cares, and are therefore conducted every now and then; trials are expensive and protecting foreign authors’ rights not a priority of where these not-wealthy countries want to spend their justice systems’ money.
It would be no surprise to learn that there are equally large on-line communities pirating fiction books that aren’t available for sale. People providing a public service for their fellow countrymen who want to read English books aren’t going to gate their servers to prevent readers from countries where the books are readily available and affordable from downloading them.

@Sunita: Yeah, I am guessing there is an issue with kindle edition big enough that amazon pulled the book temporarily – just would be annoying if it comes back fully priced without people given a chance to get the book at a deal price. I had an issue once with paperback edition of another book, which had covers of the book I ordered but totally different book was inside of those covers, I returned, let them know and that same message was blinking there. Sunita, I am sure you have read his ‘Almost like being in love’? If not, I cant recommend it highly enough.
