Soft April for Adult, Children Sales – April book sales were down due to last year’s successes such as Hunger Games and Fifty Shades. Adult book sales were down 4.% and children/YA fell 33.1%. Adult ebook sales were up 12.4% in the first quarter, nearing a half billion dollars in sales.
‘Mortal Instruments’ Continues Streak of Teen Movie Misfires – Mortal Instruments was a huge box office bomb. It took in about $14 million over five days and cost $50 million to produce. Critics savaged it saying it was a weak derivative of Harry Potter, Twilight and Star Wars. These criticisms would come as no surprise to those who knew the MI origins. It was, in fact, Harry Potter fan fiction spring boarding off the character of Draco.
But MI isn’t the first post Twilight big budget YA book to flop. Earlier this year was the star studded Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia which earned only $7.5 million at the box office. This doesn’t really bode well for Divergent.
Clare shouldn’t be too unhappy. The promo around the movie brought her books back onto the bestseller lists. Fifty Shades is due out in August of 2014 and hasn’t even gotten a cast yet. I suspect all those romance books snapped up for movie adaptions will be cast aside. Wall Street Journal
