June Open Thread for Promotional Thread for Authors

What’s this you say? I read quite a few blogs outside the romance blogosphere and many of the big ones have a daily open thread where the commenters drive the bus. I thought we would test out an open thread here at Dear Author. We are going to start with two a month. On the first Sunday of every month, there will be an Author Promo Night Open Thread. On the first Monday of the month, there will be a Reader Open Thread. Both threads will be linked to on the front of the site.

The rules for Author Promo Night Open Thread are as follows:

  • The book has to be released in that month (i.e., anything released during the last week of April would be a May release)
  • You can post for yourself or you can have a friend post for you if the idea of posting about your book paralyzes you .
  • No self published authors unless you write romance. No, I am not a POD hater, I am just thinking about the manageability of the thread.
  • Think about the readership. I.e., does your non fiction book about psoriasis really fit?
  • This one is more of a guideline than a rule, but be smart about your comment because if it is just a link to your website and the title of your book, I doubt you are going to get any interest.
  • DA reserves the right to delete the post if it promotes objectionable content (i.e., no daddy/daughter incest recommends are going to be allowed. Sorry.)

That’s it. Post away.

Hope this one counts since I read it a few days ago but it comes out on June 3rd by Samhain. It’s the sequel to BRAZEN that came out last year.

    RECKLESS by Maya Banks
    Available June 3, 2008

He can run, but he can’t hide.

Sheriff J.T. Summers promised to keep an eye on his best friend's little sister. What could possibly go wrong? A lot. “Little” Nikki Durant isn't so little anymore. She's sex on a stick, and she's pointed right at him.

Nikki has always loved J.T., and she's through waiting for him to come around. The soaring summer temperature is nothing compared to the heat generated when she sets fire to his senses. With a take-no-prisoners attitude, she's out to get her man. But no matter how many ways she offers it, J.T.'s not buying.

What's it going to take to get him to realize her love for him isn't a passing fling? Get herself arrested? Hmm…

So, you read Interstitial (my new m/m novella with ravening space monsters, heroics, love triangles and bickering), and wondered what happened next, right? Well, wonder no more!

There is a completely free, 11k short story sequel, called ‘Synchronised’ available now on the ‘Other Fantasy’ page of my website. No passwords, no competition, no tricks – all freely available, right at the top of that page.

Warnings: HUGE, huge spoilers for Interstitial, explicit sexual content and bad language. Seriously, this story will make no sense if you haven’t read Interstitial, so if you haven’t bought it, or you’ve bought it and haven’t read it, or I gave you a copy and you went, yeah yeah, one day – make today, the day!

Secrets: a PsyCop Novel is out today!

Chris Owen says: “Tension from all directions, a few days off to move house, what could go wrong? I sat down and didn’t stop reading until the end, utterly entranced yet again by Jordan Castillo Price’s world.”

Secrets is book 4 in the PsyCop series. Click on “Preview this Book” for a chapter-long sample!

Victor Bayne's job as a PsyCop involves tracking down dead people and getting them to spill their guts about their final moments. It’s never been fun, per se. But it’s not usually this annoying. Vic has just moved in with his boyfriend Jacob, he can't figure out where anything's packed, and his co-worker is pressuring him to have a housewarming party. Can't a guy catch a break?

On a more sinister note, Vic discovers there's absolutely no trace of him online. No trace of anyone else who trained at “Camp Hell,” either. Everyone Vic knows has signed a mysterious set of papers to ensure his “privacy.” The contracts are so confidential that even Vic has never heard of them. But Jacob might have.

What other secrets has Jacob been keeping?

    Jun 01, 2008 @ 22:59:03

Well since our book is a May release, I’ll plug my writing partner’s new solo release.

Coming June 15 from Amber Quill! Tales From The Graveyard Shift: Ghouls is one of the winners of this year’s Amber Quill Amber Heat contest. It’s an erotica with snark. Told in first person, it follows .. aw heck. Here’s the blurb!

Tales from the Graveyard Shift: Ghouls is a contemporary paranormal novel where witches, Mages, elves, were-folk, dwarves, psychics and other practitioners of magic run amok! Okay, not really amok. Crystal LaFarge is a Level 5 magic practitioner and a psychic. As head of the State's Paranormal Investigative Team (SPIT for short), she's seen a lot of paranormal activity, brought some illegal magic users to justice, and secretly lusted after Captain Brian Booker for some time.

Brian Booker is a by-the-book cop. He doesn't take chances in the field, and seemingly doesn't take them with his love life, either. Though he and Crystal grew up in the same neighborhood, they weren't really close as Brian and his twin sister are the same age as Crystal's older brother. Brian is a Level 2 practitioner and perfectly happy to maintain that state. He's not really into the practice of magic, just finds it helpful when dealing with those he has to arrest.

Ulrich is a Level 8 Mage. There are not many who have attained that ranking, and they, along with all other high-level Mages are ruled by the Mage Council. Ulrich has been sent to find and contain the Level 8 who is using his powers for personal gain. Instead, he finds Crystal and Brian. Ulrich knows that together, the three of them can combine their unique powers and defeat anyone who stands against them. Now he has to convince the reluctant psychic and the recalcitrant cop that he knows what he's talking about.

This is a true menage meaning all the characters get into an emotional and physical relationship with each other.

Of course, you may think I like this story because Kacey is the other half of Marilu Mann, but seriously… this is a contest winner for a reason!

My newest title for Ellora’s Cave, Liberation, is a contribution to their “Oh Yum!” or older woman/younger man series, which is turning into quite an eye-popper. Truth be told, I think it’s kind of a glimpse behind the veil of many authors’ lives — fictionally rendered, of course. (Hooray for us salacious old biddies!) It’s not exactly like reading about the sex practices of LKH and Jonathan — but, hey, most of us aren’t fortunate enough to be that blessed. ;-)

My heroine is a cellist. I never mastered string instruments, just reeds. Well, I take that back. I never really mastered them, just squawked away on an alto saxophone and bassoon. So there’s no connection. None none none. Anyway, the different takes on this theme have been pretty damned interesting so far — funny, angsty, often insightful, always . . . well, you know what the EC “always” is.

The books are worth a look. You can’t beat free blurbs and excerpts.

As half of the Jamie Craig team, I’m excited that our novel, “Fortune’s Return,” comes out at Liquid Silver on June 2. It’s an m/m erotic romance:

Ryan Putnam has lost everything. Laid off from teaching high school and dumped by his lawyer boyfriend, he has nowhere else to go but his childhood home – the Good Fortune ranch. He plans to take the summer to regroup and start over. He never expects to be smitten with a cowboy. Especially not a cowboy like Teo Mendez, who is everything Ryan's ex-boyfriend is not.

Four years after his wife’s death, Teo Mendez has returned to what he loves the most – working the land. He believes the Good Fortune ranch is the perfect place to build a new life for his son, Antonio. When his boss’s brother Ryan shows up to work, the other man's haunted eyes reminds Teo of everything he has lost as well. So he offers the only thing he can-‘his friendship. But it doesn’t take long for Ryan to reawaken long dormant emotions and desires.

Ryan doesn't intend to find a relationship. Teo doesn't want to complicate his life with a fling. What they have between them, however, is too powerful to ignore.

There’s an excerpt at the LSB forum, and chapter 1 will be available as an excerpt when it goes on sale the 2nd.

Can I just say… the line “sex on a stick” in the Maya Banks blurb totally made me want to run out and buy that book?

This isn’t a release per se, but I’ll take this opportunity to mention the free short story I posted, the last week in May. For the readers who liked March in Grimspace: there’s a prequel up on my website. Go check it out if you’d like a peek at what March was like before Mair fixed him.

Not sure if this is going to get deleted by Jane. Like Ann above, It’s not a new release novel per se, but a serialisation. Apologies if I’ve drawn too long a bow on this one.

It’s romantic suspense set in another universe. It’s about two women falling in love in an alien combat zone. And it’s FREE! :)

As senior officer with the Perlim Empire, Cheloi Sie is committed to her mission. Unfortunately, it’s not the one the Empire gave her.

To read the first six chapters (Prologue plus five), please direct your browsers to War Games. Next chapter will be posted on 04-June.

    Thanks for the open thread!

SPEAK ITS NAME is released 1st June!

Expectations riding on young Englishmen are immense; for those who've something to hide, those expectations could prove overwhelming.

Speak Its Name is a “Trilogy” from Linden Bay Romance – three novellas in one volume by three writers of Gay Historical Romance. It will be available as an ebook at first, followed in a few weeks by a print version. Buy here

Aftermath by Charlie Cochrane (1920's Oxford)

When shy Edward Easterby first sees the popular Hugo Lamont, he’s both envious of the man’s social skills and ashamed of finding him so attractive. But two awful secrets weigh Lamont down. One is that he fancies Easterby, at a time when the expression of such desires is strictly illegal. The second is that an earlier, disastrous encounter with a young gigolo has left him unwilling to enter into a relationship with anyone. Hugo feels torn apart by the conflict between what he wants and what he feels is ‘right’. Will Edward find that time and patience are enough to change Hugo’s mind?

Gentleman's Gentleman by Lee Rowan (Victorian)

Lord Robert Scoville has lived in a reasonably comfortable Victorian closet, without hope of real love, or any notion that it’s right there in front of him if he would only open his eyes and take notice of his right-hand man, Jack Darling. Jack has done his best to be satisfied with the lesser intimacy of caring for the man he loves, but his feigned role as a below-stairs ladies’ man leaves his heart empty. When a simple diplomatic errand turns dangerous and a man from their past raises unanswerable questions, both men find themselves endangered by the secrets between them. Can they untangle the web of misunderstanding before an unknown attacker parts them forever?

Hard and Fast by Erastes (Regency)

Major Geoffrey Chaloner has returned, relatively unscathed, from the Napoleonic War, and England is at peace for the first time in years. Unable to set up his own establishment, he is forced to live with his irascible father who has very clear views on just about everything – including exactly whom Geoffrey will marry and why. The trouble is that Geoffrey isn’t particularly keen on the idea, and even less so when he meets Adam Heyward, the enigmatic cousin of the lady his father has picked out for him…

As Geoffrey says himself: ‘I have never been taught what I should do if I fell in love with someone of a sex that was not, as I expected it would be, opposite to my own.’

My latest paranormal romance released from Samhain Publishing just last week.

    Waitin’ on a Hero

Getting the girl might not be as hard as keeping her alive.

Finley Gallagher is hot and tired. Tired of the endless heat wave. Tired of pretending she isn't interested in her sexy next-door neighbor. And really tired of everyone's endless talk about the city's mysterious vigilante who puts criminals in their place.

But when Finley is attacked and her apartment vandalized, she's forced to rely on the two men she'd rather not have anything to do with. One hides who he is, unleashing her deepest fantasies from the shadows; the other proves how wrong she was about him with one devastating smile after another.

Plagued by visions that let him glimpse the future, Trace Fairbanks is determined to do whatever it takes to keep the streets safe, even if it means leading a double life. He's also determined to prove to Finley that he's not the playboy she thinks he is.

Too bad Finley is completely turned off by his alter ego…or is she?

Kaz, just a small point – I’m not posting a serialisation, and I actually wrote to Jane first to check it was okay to post about the free sequel.

When your serial’s finished, I’d love to review it so please feel free to email to remind me when it’s done. We see so little f/f. (And for your interest, Samhain said recently they were looking for more GLBT romance – you might consider subbing to them. Your novel sounds like the kind of thing they’re looking for.)

The Raven’s Revenge was an American Title II finalist. Those of you who like your historical romances set in other times, take note: it is set in 1663, during England’s Restoration.

When Katherine Welles saves the life of a highwayman, she realizes he may offer the only avenue of escape from a betrothal to her villainous neighbor. She doesn’t expect to fall in love with this charming stranger whose offer of aid masks his motive of revenge.

RT gave it 4 Stars and said:

“A thief, a damsel in distress and plenty of conflict–what more could a reader want?…Black adds sensuality and humor to this intriguing historical…”

And it received some great author quotes:

THE RAVEN’S REVENGE will warm your heart and restore your faith in the power of love. –Claire Delacroix, U.S.A. Today Bestselling Author

THE RAVEN’S REVENGE is a delightfully satisfying and sexy Restoration romp!

Its print release is this Friday, (but it is already at Amazon).

If you like historical romances with pirates, check out Eden’s Pass, just released by Samhain Publishing.

Love can blow even a true pirate off course.

Finn Eden will do anything to escape a life of slavery on a Barbados sugar plantation. Even risk her life disguised as a cabin boy aboard a pirate ship, putting up with the drunken captain's slovenly habits. Then her patience nets her an unexpected opportunity: A ship of her own. Half the profits. And freedom. Too bad the captain conveniently left out a small detail; there's a price on his head.

Captain Inigo Sebastiano is a ruthless pirate with a years-long score to settle with the man who raped and murdered his wife. The truce he's struck with the fiery Finn is uneasy in more ways than one, but his unsettling reaction to his new cabin “boy” is explained when he uncovers her true identity. Ever the gentleman pirate, he'll help his lovely new bedmate keep her secret. For now. When the time is right, it's a secret he'll use to his advantage.

But the spitfire in his bed rekindles something in his heart he thought had died. As Inigo closes in on his quarry, he begins to wonder if Finn's freedom-‘and her trust-‘is a sacrifice he's willing to make.

The Ballad of Jimothy Redwing by Maia Strong
Available 10 June from Samhain Publishing

New lover. New city. New dangers. Jimothy’s become a player in a tale of another’s crafting. Who holds the quill and what are they plotting next?

Wand'ring Minstrel Jimothy Redwing is used to life on the road, living by the words and music that are his stock in trade. While he's comfortable finding his way alone, he's always amenable to a friendly stranger who knows the lay of the land. Ricky Lennox is smart, funny, handsome, and very amenable.

With a place to stay, a sexy new lover, and some local contacts, Jimothy looks forward to delivering the letters in his care-‘including a message for the local ruler-‘and earning a little money with his music before moving on.

Ricky's declaration he's interested in more than just a one-night tryst starts Jimothy thinking about settling into a life of perfect harmony. But things hit a sour note when he learns his lover's true identity-‘and exactly what's in the epistle to Kanbec's ruler.

Jimothy's journey turns out to be far more complicated than he could have dreamed, and as dangerous as any epic ballad. For himself-‘and for Ricky.

Kensington just shipped a box of my June release to me! I have 50 copies of SHE to give away. Want to win a copy? I’m giving them away in several ways. First, I’m giving one copy away to my June newsletter subscribees. To join, just click on the Yahoo button on my myspace page or on my website. You could win at the end of the month.

Second, on the first Monday of every month at 9:00pm EST (that’s tonight!), the Aphrodisia authors have an on-line chat at Writerspace. You don’t have to subscribe to join the chat. Just go to around 9:00 and join the fun. I give away books, and so do other Aphrodisia authors. It’s a good way to ask published authors questions, hear about our new releases, win some stuff, and have fun.

Third, I post a blog on the 8th of every month at the Aphrodisia site. This month, I’ll be giving away a copy of SHE to someone who comments. Check out the blog at

Coffee Time Romance gave SHE a 5-cup rating. This is what they said:
Wow! SHE is a page-turner galore! Ms. Betts has written her best story yet with this one. The world building is incredible and makes the story so real that you feel as though the characters could step off the pages and talk to you. I really loved the solid heart-centered characters, as well as the sizzling sex. I hope that Ms. Betts has more like this one planned in the future, because she now has a fan for life!

Sweet idea, Ja(y)nes – thanks for the opportunity! I am late, but I am sliding on in! I write sensual, sizzling westerns and I’ve got two to crow about.

The first is a print release of my short story, Marielle’s Marshal, in the Sand, Sun and Sex: Midsummer Night’s Steam anthology with Sami Lee, Michelle Cary and Jennifer Colgan. It’s available in print now on Amazon, B&N as well as your favorite book site.

My second release is Hell for Leather, an ebook on June 17 (my parents’ 47th anniversary :). Not quite a Malloy book, this is Kincaid’s story – he Kincaid was featured in The Gift, hired to do some dirty business by an even dirtier crook. After meeting the Malloys, he stuck around to become Brett Mallloy’s friend in The Tribute. And then, he was gone…

To reappear in his own story, Hell for Leather, and finally find his HEA. This book was fun to write – Kincaid has a razor sharp sense of humor – and has a kicking cover by the wonderful Scott Carpenter.

If you like your heroes dark, your heroines strong and some hot lovin’, then check out these two westerns.

  27. Susanne Saville
    Jun 04, 2008 @ 20:30:34

I was just pleasantly surprised to find an anthology with a novella of mine has been released today (June 4)! So on behalf of Celia Ashley, Laine Morgan, AnnMarie Ortega, and myself:

WICKED ROGUES by Celia Ashley, Laine Morgan, AnnMarie Ortega, and Susanne Saville (Fantasy Romance)

The only thing that’s more delightful than a woman finding herself at the `mercy’ of a wicked rogue is discovering a cache of four-‘each one more tempting than the last. In the anthology, Wicked Rogues, four authors explore their take on the fascinating subject of how to capture the heart of a rogue. Sensuality: CARNAL

The Other Side of Silence by Celia Ashley: From the first day she met him, everything about the tall, dark stranger with the beautiful amber eyes set Sunny’s blood on fire. But just who was Roger? Where had he come from? Who had he been? No one knew, not even Roger Macleod.

Pirate’s Secret by Laine Morgan: From the first moment Shannon spied the dark pirate, Patrick Flannigan, she wanted to experience the thrill of excitement and adventure only he could offer. She hadn’t expected to fall in love the rogue, but she refused to be left behind, stealing away on his ship when he sailed away from their homeland.

Patrick hadn’t taken a mortal lover in centuries, and he certainly hadn’t expected to fall in love with one. There was no future in it-none, for he couldn’t bring himself to make her into what he was.

Captain Devlin’s Captive by Susanne Saville: Little does Jasabel Buchanan realize the rakish Bermuda sloop she sights on the horizon is about to plunge her into a passionate voyage of intrigue and adventure. An indentured lady’s maid to the rich Governor’s daughter, Jasabel is taken prisoner when the ship on which they sail is seized by pirates. Soon she finds herself the personal captive of the pirates’ dark, enigmatic captain.

Sent into bondage on the plantations because of his Jacobite loyalties, Captain Neil Devlin escaped to become the terror of the English colonies. When the chance to abduct his former owner’s daughter presents itself, he takes it. What he doesn’t expect is her spirited, and captivating, lady’s maid.

But amongst old injustices an evil lurks, and before she can be free, Jasabel must decide if she dares to love a pirate.

The Diary of Annalise by AnnMarie Ortega: When Annalise’s father died, he left her with only the family tavern, a pile of debt, and a burning hatred for the pirates who frequent the tavern. One night, a mysterious stranger re-ignites the fire in her mourning heart. But their passion turns dangerous when Annalise finds herself kidnapped by the very men she hates.

    He’s immortal.
    He’s a lion.
    And he’s here…

For centuries he's hidden in the woods. Now a maid has come to lead him out…

It's been four centuries since Steinarr the Proud was cursed by a wicked sorceress-‘along with the rest of his Viking crew-‘to live for eternity as half man, half beast. By day Steinarr is like any other man-‘by night he is a lion. He has taken refuge in the woods of Nottinghamshire, England, and there he encounters two young travelers, Robin and Marian.

Painfully aware of the danger he presents when the moon rises, Steinarr initially refuses to help them search for the key to Robin’s inheritance. Then a kiss from Marian awakens his desire. Driven to protect the maid he so desperately wants to possess, Steinarr joins their quest…while the sorceress Cwen gathers her dark magic to destroy them.

As a legend spreads of an outlaw in the woods, their band is joined by others. But it is Steinarr who has the most to gain and the most to lose-‘if he is ever to be free of the curse and free to love as a man…
