Open Thread for Authors (Author Promo) for June 2013

Author Open ThreadWelcome to the Promotional Thread for Authors. What’s this you say? I read quite a few blogs outside the romance blogosphere and many of the big ones have a daily open thread where the commenters drive the bus.

The rules for Author Promo Night Open Thread are as follows:

The book has to be released in that month (i.e., anything released during the last week of February would be a March release)
You can post for yourself or you can have a friend post for you if the idea of posting about your book paralyzes you .
No self published authors unless you write romance. No, I am not a POD hater, I am just thinking about the manageability of the thread.
Think about the readership. I.e., does your non fiction book about psoriasis really fit?
This one is more of a guideline than a rule, but be smart about your comment because if it is just a link to your website and the title of your book, I doubt you are going to get any interest.
DA reserves the right to delete the post if it promotes objectionable content (i.e., no daddy/daughter incest recommends are going to be allowed. Sorry.)
That’s it. Post away.

Another long time reader who read romance novels in her teens, then took a long break before started back again about 15 years ago. She enjoys historical romance/fiction best, likes contemporaries, action- adventure and mysteries, will read suspense if there's no TSTL characters and is currently reading very few paranormals.

    Thanks for the opportunity!

THE BEST MAN TO TRUST is my new release from Harlequin Intrigue, and my final book for the line. It’s an Agatha Christie-style romantic mystery, with a group of characters trapped in a mansion during a blizzard with a killer among them:

Wedding planner Meredith Sutton has a lot riding on the next wedding at Sutton Hall. She’s prepared for everything…except seeing her old college crush in the wedding party. But not even Tom Campbell can throw Meredith off her game. A killer, on the other hand, might mess things up…

Trapped in the midst of the fiercest blizzard the isolated mountain town has ever seen, the guest list becomes smaller by the day. And when Tom becomes the only person she can rely on, Meredith can’t help wanting one last chance at love. Since they might not be alive once the storm breaks…

My new sexy contemporary romance BREAKING ALL THE RULES is also out now on Amazon, and free for the next several days:

It was a perfect arrangement. For three years Nina Warren met up with U.S. Marine Bobby Dellucci for fantastic, no-strings-attached sex whenever he was in the country. No drama. No expectations. Just fun. But when Bobby returns from his most recent overseas deployment, he wants to change their deal. He’d like to get to know her better and see if they can have something more.

“Something more” is exactly what Nina doesn’t want with him. A military brat who grew up moving around the world, she isn’t interested in dating anyone in the service. Fiercely independent, she knows what it’s like for her life not to be her own, and she doesn’t want that anymore. She already broke her rule getting involved with him at all. But Bobby isn’t one to give up easily and he’s willing to fight for her—for them.

Additional details on both books are available at my website (linked to in my name since I think this will only let me include one link).

Fire & Frost – coming May 27th (available now at some stores) – $0.99 for the first weeks, then $2.99.

Carolyn Crane, Jessica Sims (Jill Myles), and I teamed up for another anthology of paranormal and steampunk novellas. It’s 230 pages/71,000 words in total.

Currently it’s on sale for 99c at Amazon, B&N, and All Romance eBooks. I’ve uploaded it to several other bookstores, but those links aren’t live yet.

    Here’s the blurb:

From the authors who brought you Wild & Steamy come three all-new tales of lovers who create their own heat, even when they’re surrounded by ice…

Speed Mating by Jessica Sims – Estrella may be going into heat, but she’s determined to remain in control. Just because she’s ovulating doesn’t mean she has to settle for just any man (or his beast). Her sexy alpha’s determined to find her a tiger to take care of her heat and father her child…but no one seems to look quite as good as the man in charge. Will giving in to her need for her alpha ruin her tenuous relationship with her clan or be a match made in heaven? (16K words)

Conjuring Max by Carolyn Crane – The witches of the world ridiculed and rejected nerdy Veronica for trying to use newfangled computers to enhance old world spellcasting. Well, it’s 1984 now, and she’s perfected her spellcasting computer program. Hey, who needs friends when you can conjure virtually anything…or anybody? So when Veronica makes powerful new enemies, she conjures Max, a pitbull of a cop, to deal with the pesky hitmen who keep coming around. Maybe Veronica can finally get some peace and quiet so she can work on her computer. But tough-guy Max is in no mood to play lapdog to a gorgeous witch. (25K words)

Wrecked by Meljean Brook – A Tale of the Iron Seas – Elizabeth has spent the past five years running from her father; her father’s huntsman, Caius, has spent the past five years pursuing her. But when he finally catches up to her on an airship flying above Europe’s zombie-infested cities, Elizabeth discovers that Caius isn’t the only danger she has to fear–and now that he’s found her, Caius doesn’t intend to let her go… (30K words)

An excerpt from my steampunk story is available here.

For those of you who prefer print, we are also issuing a print compilation of Wild & Steamy and Fire & Frost this week.

POISON IN THE BLOOD is out in June from Samhain. It’s a sequel to my novella THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EMILY, and features magic, matchmaking, murder, and mayhem in the streets of Victorian London:

Banished from home while her husband adjusts to life as an immortal, blood-drinking chronicler, Emily Black is homesick, heartsick and struggling under the constant sensory barrage of a city drenched in ancient magic. When an old friend asks for her aid in solving a string of murders, she welcomes the distraction, despite the danger.

Justine Dubois is grateful for a seer’s help, and more understanding than anyone of Emily’s plight. As a guardian, Justine commands respect; as a woman, her magic is considered inferior. Together, they are determined to prove their worth to London’s magicians, starting with solving these murders—with maybe a bit of matchmaking on the side.

Long before he met his soul mate, Michael Black made a commitment to join the Order of St. Jerome. He will live forever, forced to watch the woman he loves age and die. As Emily hunts the murderer, Michael struggles to protect her. But if he loses control of his hunger, the greatest threat to her safety could be Michael himself.

Warning: Contains tortured soul mates, scheming faeries, vampire debauchery, deadly parasols, illicit blood-drinker relations, and adorable plot moppets.

My historical romance novella has just been released by Boroughs Publishing Group. THE RULES OF ENGAGEMENT is a lighthearted regency friends-to-lovers story:

Long ago, Hugh Trevalyn invented a fiancée to fend off marriage-minded females. Now he must procure the perfect girl to play the part.
Who better than Amelia Grant, his oldest and dearest friend? She alone might understand—and forgive—his moment of madness upon beholding the beautiful Lucy Meriwether, a moment that resulted in Hugh’s first real proposal of marriage and Lucy’s vow to meet his ex-fiancée in the flesh. However, as the proposed conversation snowballs into an elaborate charade involving Hugh’s rakish cousin, scandal, and inappropriate kisses, as Hugh risks Amelia’s friendship to win Lucy’s hand, a wise reader has to wonder: What exactly are the rules of engagement? And, after the battle, whose heart will be won?

It is available at Amazon, All Romance eBooks and the publisher.

RUSH, my first foray into young adult hits shelves June 11.

So what’s the game now? This, or the life I used to know?

Miki Jones’s carefully controlled life spirals into chaos after she’s run down in the street, left broken and bloody. She wakes up fully healed in a place called the lobby—pulled from her life, pulled through time and space into some kind of game in which she and a team of other teens are sent on missions to eliminate the Drau, terrifying and beautiful alien creatures.

There are no practice runs, no training, and no way out. Every moment of the game is kill or be killed, and Miki has only the questionable guidance of Jackson Tate, the team’s alluring and secretive leader. He evades her questions, holds himself aloof from the others, and claims it’s every player for himself. But when he puts himself at risk to watch Miki’s back, he leaves her both frustrated and fascinated. Jackson says the game isn’t really a game, that what Miki and her new teammates do now determines their survival. And the survival of every other person on this planet. She laughs. He doesn’t. And then the game takes a deadly and terrifying turn.

    Hey there

In November 2012 SBTB was cool enough to introduce my first trad published ebook – Grease Monkey Jive. It’s all about bad boys and ballroom dancing.

But I mucked up. I left one bad boy without an HEA. Readers weren’t happy. So I had to remedy that. Now there is a spin-off novella (40,000 words) called Desk Jockey Jam.

It’s about one bad Italian boy who thinks he has his life sussed and one roller derby doll who skates over his heart.

Since watching my first roller derby jam I’ve wanted to write about derby dolls – because they really rock in a sport that is full-on contact and skill, adrenaline and strategy. Plus dress-ups, mad fans, 80’s music and like most female athletes, nowhere near enough respect.

I can’t fix the gender in sport imbalance, but I could at least try to bring the shock and awe that is roller derby to the page. Fingers crossed I’ve come at least close.

Plus there is kissing, and the destruction of some other gender stereotypes for amusement.

    Here’s a mini excerpt:

Bree eyed the penalty box. It was only a bench seat positioned at the side of the track, but it was where roller girls who’d pulled something illegal got sent for a minute. Perhaps if she looked at it hard enough she could avoid going there during the bout, because her mood could best be described as savage. She felt like pushing, punching, elbowing, head-butting. She felt like ignoring safe contact zones and doing some damage.

Last night with Ant had been out of bounds, off the track, and she only had herself to blame. She’d acted like fresh meat who didn’t know her arse from their elbow in a jam. She knew better. She’d known players like Ant all her adult life. They were heart crushers. They were sanity wreckers. They were a plague of bad skin and hideous weight swings. They were the stain of regret that never quite washed off. They were a good reason to skate alone, because they’d whip you into a brick wall soon as a better option showed up, or you challenged their notion of the world.

She did not need a man like Ant in her life. A colleague. A competitor. A stickyfoot. He made Tom, with his demands and his assumptions, look like a safe option, a reasonable person.

But she’d wanted him. She’d wanted his big sticky paws all over her. And now she wanted some violence with a capital Vee.

Desk Jockey Jam goes out free on Amazon for five days June 7-11.

THE AU PAIR AFFAIR is my latest release from Samhain, due later in June. Here’s the scoop: Looking for a clean slate, Louis never expected to find love.

When he takes a job as nanny to a Beverly Hills power couple, Louis Guzman is eager to start fresh and hopes the Krefmans never learn all the details about his seamy past. Ready to devote himself to helping raise two adorable children, he never expects to fall for one of his employers.

Since his divorce and coming out, Dan Krefman has hardly experimented with his newly embraced sexuality. His stressful job as a Hollywood producer leaves little time for a social life and the gay nightclub scene isn’t really his thing. Enter one handsome, hunky Latino nanny and Dan finds it hard to maintain his distance. Undercurrents sizzle between the two men like live wires.

Louis soon finds himself caught between his affection for the rest of the Krefman family and his attraction to Dan. A steamy affair is just the beginning as secrets from Louis’s past threaten his future and both Dan and ex-wife Crissi must decide how inclusive their family can be.

The first in a breathtaking new series about the dangerous business of undercover revenge—and the undeniable pleasure of passion…

    In the business of vengeance

    Desire is always dangerous

HOT SUMMER NIGHT is my new summer short story. Due out on June 17th. Approximately.

It’s the end of an escapist summer for Ellie Richards. Three months cooking and cleaning on a Mediterranean yacht have given her blisters on her fingers, a glorious tan, and an almost whole heart again. Apart from the little bit that’s started hankering after skipper Jake Morgan. So maybe a one night fling is exactly what she needs to get him out of her head before she heads back home tomorrow.

Tomorrow, Jake will be flying to Australia for a few months sailing and diving around the Great Barrier Reef. For him, it’s just another in a long list of short term jobs in far flung places. Jake doesn’t do long-term. He can’t. He lives every night as if it’s his last, and tonight, that means Ellie.

It’s one hot summer night for them both.

But when the dawn comes, it’s not that easy to walk away.

    Look at my pretty cover!

TEMPTED INTO DANGER is my latest action-adventure romance from Harlequin Romantic Suspense. It features a heroine who’s a “mathlete” and the black ops soldier who falls hard for her and her, ahem, big brains while they’re on the run in Panama.

    Check out TEMPTED on Goodreads:

    Here’s the back cover blurb:

When a simple mission to deliver the beautiful and brilliant Vanessa Crosby to a safe house goes horribly wrong, ICE agent Diego Santero’s life gets complicated. Keeping the anti-crime analyst safe from the notorious mercenaries after her program will put everything he’s worked for at risk.

Relentlessly hunted and not knowing whom to trust, Diego takes Vanessa on the run, deep into the heart of the deadly Panamanian rain forest. Vanessa reminds herself that she’s just another asset to the ruggedly handsome black ops agent…until their intense situation leads to a release of passion neither expected. But even if they make it out alive, how can they ever have a future together?>

Thank you for the open thread! I shall use it today. My latest Samhain release, an urban fantasy called Tangible, releases May 28 so I guess that’s smashed up next to June. Here’s the blurb:

Dreams don’t come true, but nightmares do.

When Zeke Garrett is reactivated to mentor the next dreamer that pops up on the Somnium’s radar, he’s sure it’s a mistake. The covert organization is still struggling to conceal the fallout from his last assignment, a fatal catastrophe.

From the first blast of her pepper spray, he realizes this neonati, whose nightmares manifest vampires straight from the pages of pop-culture, is more than he bargained for—a potential dreamwalker. But before her training can begin, he has to convince the stubborn, mouthy woman she’s not dreaming.

Maggie Mackey hasn’t slept well in a month, but that doesn’t explain how the monsters from her nightmares suddenly seem so real. Or why, when a team of intimidating, sword-wielding toughs rescue her, their leader captures her mouth in a swift, knee-weakening kiss.

Once he tears himself away, Zeke’s mental forehead smacking begins. Their embrace has confirmed they have a rare tangible bond, a phenomenon which fooled him once before. Somehow he must tutor the woman of his dreams without getting attached. Otherwise her nightmares could become his own.

Warning: Contains lots of cussing, pop culture references and monsters with nasty, big, pointy teeth.

    Thanks for this promo chance!

On June 13th my multicultural, interracial historical romance with paranormal elements is published by Ellora’s Cave.

‘Dark Maiden’ – A black female exorcist in medieval England.

Women during the Middle Ages could not be priests but during the period of the Black Death, when thousands died, including hundreds of priests, the church allowed women to take confessions from dying people. In early 1349 the bishop of Bath and Wells wrote to his priests to encourage all men to confess, before they were taken by the pestilence. He added that if they had no priest they should follow the teaching of the Apostles and confess to each other ‘or, if no man is present, even to a woman’. (From translation in Philip Zeigler, The Black Death, page 125).
Medieval people also believed that in a crisis anyone, priest or lay person, could perform an exorcism because every Christian has the power to command demons and drive them away in the name of Christ. I took these ideas and developed them, allowing my Yolande to become an exorcist.
In ‘Dark Maiden’ I have Yolande and Geraint (a travelling player who becomes her friend, help-mate, lover and finally husband) face several encounters with both restless spirits and also demons. My ideas have always been shaped by the real beliefs of the time. So in ‘Dark Maiden’ there are evil spirits, restless ghosts called revenants, an incubus and vampires – all paranormal creatures with a medieval slant.
More details of ‘Dark Maiden’ here.

My new book, despite the title (HUBBLE BUBBLE), is not in the least Harry Potterish. In fact, also despite the title, it doesn’t really feature ‘magic’ at all, except the magic that is in the eye of the beholder. It’s out on the 7th of June.

    Here’s the blurb…

Be careful what you wish for…
Holly Grey only joined the women’s group to keep her friend out of trouble – and now she’s knee-deep in hassle, in the form of apocalyptic weather, armed men, midwifery…and a sarcastic Welsh journalist.

Kai has been drawn to darkest Yorkshire by his desire to find out who he really is. What he hadn’t bargained on was getting caught up in amateur magic and dealing with a bunch of women who are trying really hard to make their dreams come true.

Together they realise that getting what you wish for is sometimes just a matter of knowing what it is you want…

This book contains dangerous levels of sarcasm, amounts of snow that anyone who lives anywhere truly snowy (like Alaska) will sneer at, but we Brits get severely discombobulated by lots of snow, and that kind of British humour that is so difficult to explain. It’s set in deepest Yorkshire, at the foot of the North York Moors near where I live and where I set all my fiction so I don’t have to leave my chair to do research, so if you fancy a taste of British life without the tedium of having to sit through the damp and the complaining…

I can’t work out how to make this a proper embedded link. I can write books, but in all other matters I’m as stupid as a really stupid thing on International Stupid day….

The path to the altar is fraught with obstacles, however, and Tris has to deal with the wilds of online dating, wardrobe malfunctions, men who look like pirates, emotional baggage, grooms with cold feet, and sports team rivalries before he even gets to the wedding. BLURB: Magic, mayhem, and motherhood… a witch’s work is never done, but Sabrina draws the line at the Fae.

I have a contemporary M/M erotic romance, called Sage Advice, coming out on June 1 from Dreamspinner Press in Make A Play, their June Daily Dose Anthology.

“Two athletes—one game. Piper, a ballet dancer who has a secret, has been moody for a month. His best friend, Sage, lures him into a night of drinking and friendly playing. Only… the game is truth or dare. As they end up doing less drinking and more confessing, hidden secrets spill out, and brazen acts draw the two men closer to what really matters—and closer to each other.”

Thank you kindly for this opportunity :)

    Hello all,

Thank you for this awesome opportunity to promote! With that said, here’s my ebook promo:

TEACHING MELODY is a quick erotic romance read of 7700 words. TM was released 5-29.

Melody has a crush on her best friend’s father, Preston D’Anjou, age 34.

Preston D’Anjou is tall, handsome and blond. He’s also very kind.

Whenever clumsy, shy Melody falls and hurts herself, Preston is always there to nurse her wounds.

And when Preston’s wife leaves him, Melody is there to nurse Preston’s wounds.

An innocent childhood crush evolves when Melody turns eighteen. Now it’s time for some hot sex—the kind only an experienced older man can give. And he’s even the proud owner of a massive…

“Do you want me to kiss you?” He fondled my hip, ran his hand up the curve of my waist. “I’ll give you a real kiss from a real man with experience. If you’d like.”

“Yes.” God yes. I closed my eyes, waiting, hoping Preston would never break my heart.

“Just tell me if I’m moving too fast for you. Okay?” he said.

Preston’s sensuous lips grazed my temple, then my cheek. Tenderly his mouth kissed down to the corner of my lips. He palmed my jaw, turning my head until my mouth met his. Preston’s lips delved into mine. My first actual kiss by a man. His mouth forced mine widely open to accept his tongue.
Once again, thank you so very much!

The Holy Trinity (The Wolves of Gardwich) by Jane Wallace-Knight

    Manage Amour m/m/m

Sam Reed was born different. It’s a fact he has always known and tried to hide. Abandoned as a baby, he has always felt out of place, never really knowing where he came from or why he can do the things he can.

Jackson Harcourt has long feared the day he will meet his mate. Banished from his birth pack, Jackson soon found himself in charge of a pack of outcasts and misfits, all looking for somewhere to belong. Fifty years ago, Jackson met and fell in love with a seven-hundred-year-old vampire named Alek, and together they have not only built themselves a pack, but a family.

When fate throws Sam, Jackson’s true mate, into Jackson’s path, Alek’s ancient heart feels as though it will finally break into too many pieces to ever again be whole. As Alek prepares for the worst though, he begins to wonder if perhaps fate doesn’t, truly, move in mysterious ways.

Jayne and all other Dear Authorians, thank you for giving us this opportunity. Last month, I announced my upcoming book, Angels’ Prey. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the release date was bumped ahead, but according to my publisher ( it will be going live within the next few days.

    Here’s the blurbie!

Clarice Larrabee’s scandalous dalliances as a maid in the Oakesdale estate have her expelled to the Holy Order of St. Anne for a life of celibacy and repentance. Lord Frothingham’s calculated seduction and Clarice’s romance with his handsome son George led to her social and spiritual ruin, leaving her heartbroken, scorned, and bereft. There is no place in Victorian English society for a love so passionate, nor a will so bold, nor a mind so bright as Clarice Larrabee, who now dedicates herself to the convent, praying with all her might for redemption. Yet how long can she run from her true nature?

An amorous visitation from an Angel named Jabazael reawakens the sensual side of Clarice, from which there is no turning back. After a night of wanton lust in the arms of this powerful being, she realizes her destiny is not within the confines of a manse, nor the walls of a cathedral, but in another realm altogether. After her surrender to Angel Jabazael, she encounters Daemon Maelfar, who reveals Clarice’s unique destiny as a receptacle of angelic light and diabolical darkness. But her role in the universal balance between good and evil can only begin after a ritual of erotic pleasure when both holy creatures share her body, where she eternally submits to becoming. . .

QUEEN’S HUNT, the second book in my River of Souls trilogy, came out today in paperback.

Ilse Zhalina has left to start a new life, leagues from her estranged lover, Raul Kosenmark. The quarrel that ended their relationship was quite public, and quite fake. They hoped to mislead Raul’s enemies so he could continue to influence the politics of the kingdom and stave off an ill-advised war, while keeping Ilse safe. Ilse is set on her own quest to find one of the three fabled jewels of Lir. In her search, she encounters a woman who has one jewel in her keeping. The two women become allies in their quest for the other jewels. Queen’s Hunt is the stunning next installment in Beth Bernobich’s River of Souls trilogy.

“The promise of Passion Play is realized in this complex sequel, a tale of intrigue among kingdoms on the brink of war.” —Publishers Weekly

“Seamlessly woven into a multi-layered world written with subtlety and purpose, Queen’s Hunt is an engrossing tale of political machinations played out over a foundation of old wrongs and fresh crises. — Kate Elliott, author of Cold Fire.

Alec Gerald, a shape-shifting dragon, has built the Crown Jewel casino to provide sanctuary for his people amongst the flash and awe of Las Vegas. Thanks DA.

Out today my new m/m release High-Sticked published by Ellora’s Cave –
High-Sticked is book 5 in my HOT ICE series – – all books may be enjoyed as stand-alone reads.

Dating Todd “Pretty” Carty was a trailblazing, headline-grabbing ride that shocked and divided a team, a sport and a nation. While controversy ruled, our feelings exploded and we couldn’t deny the desire that sizzled between us. Nothing, however, was easy outside the bedroom. Not when my world-class, fearless athlete wanted to shout from Everest that he was in love with another man.

But laying my heart on the line and having my picture dominating the papers was worth it. Everything about Todd turned me on. His bold hockey skills, his courageous attitude and the way he melted in my arms when I kissed him. I melted too, because he knew how to press my buttons, remind me of the man I used to be and take me to those places where ecstasy ruled.

The world might have trouble accepting us, but we’d committed to each other, mind, body and soul, and nothing could change that.
