Open Thread for Authors (Author Promo) for January 2014

Author Open ThreadWelcome to the Promotional Thread for Authors. What’s this you say? I read quite a few blogs outside the romance blogosphere and many of the big ones have a daily open thread where the commenters drive the bus.

The rules for Author Promo Night Open Thread are as follows:

The book has to be released in that month (i.e., anything released during the last week of February would be a March release)
You can post for yourself or you can have a friend post for you if the idea of posting about your book paralyzes you .
No self published authors unless you write romance. No, I am not a POD hater, I am just thinking about the manageability of the thread.
Think about the readership. I.e., does your non fiction book about psoriasis really fit?
This one is more of a guideline than a rule, but be smart about your comment because if it is just a link to your website and the title of your book, I doubt you are going to get any interest.
DA reserves the right to delete the post if it promotes objectionable content (i.e., no daddy/daughter incest recommends are going to be allowed. Sorry.)
That’s it. Post away.

Another long time reader who read romance novels in her teens, then took a long break before started back again about 15 years ago. She enjoys historical romance/fiction best, likes contemporaries, action- adventure and mysteries, will read suspense if there's no TSTL characters and is currently reading very few paranormals.

THE SPIDER, the 10th book in my Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series, will be released on Tuesday, Dec. 24 in print, audio book, and e-book formats. Here’s the description:

How did I end up in a career where I always have blood on my hands?

Well, let me tell you a story about an assassin who thought she could do no wrong …

Ten years ago. A blistering hot August night. I remember like it was yesterday. The night I, Gin Blanco, truly became the Spider. Killing people is what I do best, especially now that I’ve honed my Ice and Stone magic. But back then, I had yet to learn one very important rule: arrogance will get you, every single time.

This particular job seemed simple: murder a crooked building contractor with ties to ruthless Fire elemental Mab Monroe. My mentor, Fletcher Lane, had some misgivings, but I was certain that I had the situation under control … right up until I exposed my weaknesses to a merciless opponent who exploited every single one of them. There’s a reason assassins aren’t supposed to feel anything. Luckily, a knife to the heart can fix that problem, especially when I’m the one wielding it …

THE SPIDER is a prequel book set 10 years before the events of SPIDER’S BITE, the first book in the series. So it’s sort of an origin story of how Gin truly becomes an assassin.

You can read an excerpt of THE SPIDER here:

Thanks to her unwanted superpower, fashion designer Bella Bulluci may be the luckiest woman in Bigtime. My January, A Promise for the Baby release is the final book in my series featuring the Milek siblings in Chicago.

He always does the right thing
There’s one exception to Karl Milek’s rule—the Vegas weekend that leaves him with a night to remember, and a beautiful new wife he’d rather forget. Those divorce papers are put on hold, however, when Vivian shows up on his doorstep pregnant.
Karl offers her shelter and everything else she needs until their baby is born. Yet soon he realizes that he could definitely get used to seeing Vivian in the mornings, sharing dinner with her at night…and inhaling her jasmine scent. But he doesn’t think he can risk giving his wife the one thing she wants most—his love.

There was a review of an inspirational novel with a preacher hero a bit ago (here) which led to twitter conversations about religion in non-inspirational romances and holidays that aren’t Christmas. If you’re one of the readers looking for that, Karl is a devout Catholic and the major holiday in the book is Easter. And it’s a Superromance, so it’s not an inspirational–just a romance with a religious hero.

There’s also a talking budgie, lots of Polish food, and the Electric Slide, so there’s something in the book for everyone :-) Library Journal said “This introspective, character-driven story is rich with family and American Polish culture.”

You can find it at all the regular places:
    Barnes and Noble
    All Romance

Have a wonderful holiday everyone! I hope it’s full of wonderful books.

The Holiday Survival Guide will be out on the 1st of January – it’s a winter novella featuring sex, snow and a yeti (not sex with a yeti. That would be an entirely different book)

    The Blurb is as follows:

Witty, clever, and sharp. It’s going to be the holiday from hell…and that’s just how Erica wants it.

When tabloid journalist Erica Parker is forced to take a holiday, she’s determined to make it the most miserable holiday she possibly can, but not even her impressive imaginative powers could have come up with sharing a tent with survival expert Nathan Wilde.

Nathan was a married man with a successful TV show before Erica got to work on his life. Now the hottest man she’s ever met is single, furious, and he’s got her alone in the wilderness for three long days…

    have a good christmas everyone!

Thank you for the opportunity! On January 13th, The Escape, Book 2 in the Pulse Trilogy, releases from Simon & Schuster Pocket Star. It’s a post-apocalyptic dystopian erotic romance novel, and is available for preorder now.

In Book Two of the erotic dystopian Pulse Trilogy, Jenna escapes New York City only to be tracked down by a soldier who might be her only hope of survival.

Jenna doesn’t know if she believes what Emily and Mason told her—that America is rebuilding and a better life awaits her outside of Manhattan. But with the power grid down and no connection to the outside world, Jenna will die if she stays at Grand Central’s FEMA camp, selling her body to soldiers.

Private Ken Barker is sent to capture Jenna when she escapes—but Jenna knows he’s one of the good guys and tries to seduce him into joining her. Their passionate sex kindles something even stronger than lust between them, and when Barker goes back to Grand Central he sees the horrors there with new eyes.

Now it’s his turn to escape the city, and he knows he must take Jenna with him or she’ll die at the camp. On the road, they’ll start a new life together, hoping against hope that the electricity between them will prove more than just a spark—that together they might finally light up their dark nights.

Thank you for letting me share the news that First to Burn, a paranormal romantic suspense, will release January 27, 2014 from Carina Press. Best-selling author Alexis Morgan read an advance copy and said: “I read the whole thing in one day … I seriously want my own Viking warrior.” I know that’s true because she sent me the quote the next night and asked if the second book was ready yet! The cover blurb:

    A soldier with secrets.
Immortal Viking Wulf Wardsen once battled alongside Beowulf, and now serves in Afghanistan. He trusts the mortal men on his elite special operations team to protect his secret, until an explosion lands him in a place more dangerous to him than a battlefield: a medevac helicopter.
    A doctor with questions.
Army captain Theresa Chiesa follows the rules and expects the same from others, even special forces hotshots like Sergeant Wardsen. She’s determined to discover the secret behind his supernaturally fast healing, and she won’t allow his sexy smile to distract her.
An enemy with nothing to lose.
Although Theresa’s investigation threatens to expose him, Wulf dreams of building a future with her. But the lost Viking relic that might reverse his immortality is being hunted by another–an ancient enemy who won’t hesitate to hurt Theresa to strike back at Wulf.

Fourteen years ago when I set out to write romances, I promised myself that my characters would always have a real date: dinner at a restaurant with waiters, wine and conversation. I was tired of insta-love and the feeling that the hero and heroine hadn’t done anything that real people do when they’re starting a relationship. In First to Burn Wulf and Theresa have a real date, and even a little bit of dish-washing, in between motorcycle chases, steaming up the sauna, and fights with Very Bad Vikings. If you’d like to join them for dinner, links:

Jake just might be the man of Lisa’s dreams, but will she let shame and fear stand in the way of a new love?

I feel like I’m late to the party here, because when I tried to load this page before I went away for x-mas I kept getting 404 errors, but it’s here now and so am I :)

Toby’s happy with his life in the small fishing village of Haggenby. At least, he thought he was. When he rescues a selkie who identifies himself as Flirt in sign language–not so much a name as a warning label, as Toby’s father notes–he’s forced to recognise he’s withdrawn from the world, and the world thinks it’s because he lost his hearing in his teens.

Stung, Toby takes Flirt out on a date, but that attracts the wrong kind of attention from the wrong kind of people: scientists keen to dissect Flirt and prove the existence of the supernatural. Flirt is kidnapped and Toby must attempt a daring rescue if he wants to keep his lover. He just hopes his lover wants to be kept.

Flirt is an m/m paranormal novella, to be published by Loose Id later this month. It is set in the same universe as my debut novel, Tease, but it is not necessary to read the former.

Hello everyone! I’m really excited to share my most recent release with all of you. It is now up on most sites, but doesn’t technically release until tomorrow!

Here’s what it is all about:

Kidnapping Isame would set them free…

Isame wanted freedom: the freedom to travel, the freedom to explore, but most of all, the freedom to choose the life she wanted over the life—and the husband—her parents had chosen for her. But when Isame leaves home to accept another man’s proposal, she happens across five fierce, handsome warriors. She wonders why they’ve travelled so far from home, but she never imagines their purpose might have something to do with her. Not even after they kidnap her.

Remmie is a man of honor and fierce loyalty. So when his king commands him to find a specific young woman on the island of Copaxa, he’s prepared to obey. But he’s not prepared for the woman to change everything. Isame is special. He can see it from the start. But how can one puny woman make him question everything he’s always known, including the rightness of doing what he’s promised?

Thanks for the opportunity to promote new work, and for your ongoing support of the romance genre.

I published this short novella (27K words) as a gift for long-time readers of my blog and hope some of the readers over here might enjoy it as well. I initially posted it on my blog in installments, which turned out to be a bit cumbersome, and people asked me to publish it on retail sites. So I did, last week. If you’re hesitant to try a new-to-you writer or simply want to read it for free, the first installment (of 11 — I know, what was I thinking?) is here on my blog:

It’s a mountain cabin, snowed-in type of contemporary romance (not erotica) featuring a grouchy taciturn man with a slight Scottish accent and a more than slightly overdeveloped sense of responsibility, and a woman who wants to get away from the stress of the city during the winter holidays. It’s the first of an intended trilogy, but is a complete stand-alone story. No cliffhangers.

A Place to Start, A McIntyre Novella (Book One: Winter)

Jo’s plan for a mountain cabin getaway from the city over the holidays didn’t include a handsome arrogant grouch of a man, but the fates had something else in mind.

Mac was tired of rescuing city folk who came to the mountains unprepared for trouble. But he was the one who wasn’t prepared for an encounter with someone like Jo.

Here are buy links for those interested:

    I hope you enjoy it!
