Open Thread for Authors (Author Promo) for April 2013

Author Open ThreadWelcome to the Promotional Thread for Authors. What’s this you say? I read quite a few blogs outside the romance blogosphere and many of the big ones have a daily open thread where the commenters drive the bus.

The rules for Author Promo Night Open Thread are as follows:

The book has to be released in that month (i.e., anything released during the last week of February would be a March release)
You can post for yourself or you can have a friend post for you if the idea of posting about your book paralyzes you .
No self published authors unless you write romance. No, I am not a POD hater, I am just thinking about the manageability of the thread.
Think about the readership. I.e., does your non fiction book about psoriasis really fit?
This one is more of a guideline than a rule, but be smart about your comment because if it is just a link to your website and the title of your book, I doubt you are going to get any interest.
DA reserves the right to delete the post if it promotes objectionable content (i.e., no daddy/daughter incest recommends are going to be allowed. Sorry.)
That’s it. Post away.

Another long time reader who read romance novels in her teens, then took a long break before started back again about 15 years ago. She enjoys historical romance/fiction best, likes contemporaries, action- adventure and mysteries, will read suspense if there's no TSTL characters and is currently reading very few paranormals.

    Slam!

    Limericks, lies and puppy-dog eyes

Jude Biggerstaff is all the way out and loving it—mostly. The Anglo-Japanese university graduate is a carnivore working in a vegan café, an amateur poet with only one man in his life. His dog, Bubbles.

Then there’s “Karate Crumpet,” a man who regularly runs past the café with a martial arts class. Jude can only yearn from afar, until the object of his affection rescues him from muggers. And he learns that not only does this calm, competent hunk of muscle have a name—David—but that he’s gay.

Jude should have known the universe wouldn’t simply let love fall into place. First, David has only one foot out of the closet. Then there’s Jude’s mother, who lies about her age to the point Jude could be mistaken for jailbait.

With a maze of stories to keep straight, a potential stepfather in the picture, ex-boyfriends who keep spoiling his dates with David, and a friend with a dangerous secret, Jude is beginning to wonder if his and David’s lives will ever start to rhyme.

Warnings: contains a tangled web of little white lies, a smorgasbord of cheesy limericks, a violin called Vanessa, some boots that mean business, and the most adorable little dog ever. Poetry, it’s not…

Due out from Samhain Publishing 9th April 2013, and now available to pre-order.

DEADLY STING, the eighth book in my Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series, will be out on March 26. Here’s the book description. Please note that this does contain some spoilers, so if you don’t want to be spoiled, you may want to skip reading the description:

Red is definitely my color. Good thing, because in my line of work, I end up wearing it a lot.

Most people shy away from blood, but for an assassin like me — Gin Blanco, aka the Spider — it’s just part of the job. Still, it would be nice to get a night off, especially when I’m attending the biggest gala event of the summer at Briartop, Ashland’s fanciest art museum. But it’s just not meant to be. For this exhibition of my late nemesis’ priceless possessions is not only the place to be seen, but the place to be robbed and taken hostage at gunpoint as well. No sooner did I get my champagne than a bunch of the unluckiest thieves ever burst into the museum and started looting the place.

Unlucky why? Because I brought along a couple of knives in addition to my killer dress. Add these to my Ice and Stone magic, and nothing makes me happier than showing the bad guys why red really is my color.

Breathing His Air by Debra Kayn

She is love advice in a coffee shack, he’s protection in a biker bar. When her past meets his present, it’s a killer cocktail that might get them shot, stabbed, or otherwise dead.

Tori Baldwin spends all her time traveling the states, running a mobile coffee shack and handing out love advice with every cup. She’s staked her rig in the parking lot of Cactus Cove—a local biker bar by all appearances— and plans to stay put for three months. Just long enough to make some money, without making any friends, before she moves to her next destination as she tries to stay ahead of a painful past.

Rain Brookshire is the leader of the Bantorus motorcycle club, and owner of the Cactus Cove in the small town of Pitnam, Washington. He wants the Lagsturns, a rival-bad-news motorcycle club, to leave town before they infect his town with trouble.

With bullets flying and the Lagsturns putting on the pressure, the only way to keep Tori safe—since she refuses to leave town—is for Rain to claim her as his woman. She has no idea that Rain’s played his hand for all to see in the biker world. It doesn’t help that Tori exhibits the three ideal classifications of his ideal woman—Classy, Sexy, and a total Goof— and he can’t help but posture and lay down the law. But, when it appears Tori’s life is in danger, and the Lagsturns are innocent, he isn’t going to let the law stop him from keeping his woman safe.

She’s been wondering the same thing.

With her Hollywood dreams long gone, Abigale now has a nice, neat, uncomplicated life—until the day her perfect fiancé needs to talk. When the journal falls into Zach’s hands, he discovers Abigale wants a new man. And fast. Nothing more than a hot distraction. Zach has a strategy, too. He’s going to be that man. DEVIL’S ANGEL is a medieval romance set in Ireland in 1016. It will be released by Samhain on April 9th.

Conor mac Ferghal wears his nickname, the Devil, like the visible scars on his face—and the invisible scars on his soul. The fearsome chieftain of Dunlough lives to protect his people, right down to the fishing village invaded by a marauding band of Viking mercenaries.

When he realizes the pale-haired warrior who almost bests him is a woman, his first instinct is to fling her unconscious body into a mud dungeon.

Erika Silverhair awakens, shocked to find she and her men accused as the aggressors. She and her warriors have spent three years of Danish exile selling their skills for gold, defending the weak and the innocent. And no one, not even an intimidating giant like Conor, will take away the freedom that is her birthright.

There is only one way to settle matters—finish the duel begun on the battlefield. Before the dark passion drawing them closer and closer threatens their closely guarded hearts.

“Memories of Love” is my short story written for the Anzac Day holiday on 25 April, which is the day Australia remembers those who’ve fought and died for our country and for peace. The story releases 1 April from Escape Publishing.

“In a style reminiscent of Robyn Carr, an intensely emotional story about taking chances and risking your heart.”

When her family home burns down, it’s the final heartbreak for Rita Jorden who has already lost her parents. Her boss, former SAS captain and head of Tamerlane Security, Ivan Novak, steps in, offering her his home and his help. But Ivan has his own demons, and although he’s interested in Rita, there’s darkness in his past that could cause her harm. Thrown together into a situation that’s too close for comfort, this story can only end in one of two ways: in the destruction of Rita’s dreams of love — or the gift of healing and hope to two damaged survivors.

My favorite thing about e-publishing? Not having to wait forever for sequels!

The Pawn came out March 1 and it told the story of Remy Stone, born poor into a futuristic world where poverty means slavery. And for a pretty young boy like he was, the slavery takes only one form. He’s older when the story opens, old enough to have given up hope of anything better. That is, until he meets Adam Challoner. Together, they challenge the rules of the world they live in, and try to find a future not only for themselves but for everyone like them.

On April 1 their story is continued in The Knight, this time from Adam’s point of view. The revolution was only the beginning of their struggles. Adam fights to hold together the world he worked so hard to create, and also struggles with his personal life. Adam loves Remy; Remy has no idea what love is, and he’s not interested in listening to Adam’s explanations. It’s hard to be a knight in shining armor when the person being rescued is so stubbornly determined to be the one doing the rescuing.

Jack McCord had everything: a thriving defense company, sinful good looks and no shortage of beautiful women. But what he coveted the most didn’t want anything to do with him. Maia Pierce, his brother’s bodyguard, was the most exquisite creature he had ever laid eyes on and he wanted her. And when Maia got into trouble he saw an opportunity to finally seduce her and he is not taking no for an answer.

*Warning* This is a Harlequin Presents. You may want to fling book into fire and dance madly while the flames consume it. If you do, send me a picture. ‘Cause that would be kinda awesome. *End of Warning*

A GAME WITH ONE WINNER is part of the “Scandal in the Spotlight” series. I have no idea what that means other than there are some photographers and possible scandals. ;)

Brief synopsis: Hot sexy Russian billionaire bad boy (too much?) wants revenge on cool beautiful heiress who dumped him five years ago. He had to run sobbing back to Russia and everything! Cruel, cruel woman! But he’s built up his fortune and — surprise! — the tables are turned now. She could lose everything (horrors!)! (Bet you didn’t see that coming, heh.) Oh, and there’s a secret baby and a gay nanny and a dead husband and some hot shower sex.

If these things are up your alley, you can read more at my page — including an excerpt and the REAL cover copy (you can see why Harlequin doesn’t let me write my own). ;) http://www.lynnrayeharris.com/books/a-game-with-one-winner/

I am delighted to announce that my new novel, THE ASHFORD AFFAIR, comes out on April 9th. I call this one my “Downton Abbey” meets “Out of Africa” book, since it zigzags back and forth between Edwardian England, Jazz Age London, 1920s Kenya and 1999 New York.

    Here’s the official blurb:

“From the NYT bestselling Pink Carnation author comes a new novel that is by turns epic and intimate, transporting and page-turning – spanning from WWI England to present day New York….

As a lawyer in a large Manhattan firm, just shy of making partner, Clementine Evans has finally achieved almost everything she’s been working towards – but now she’s not sure it’s enough. Her long hours have led to a broken engagement and, suddenly single at thirty-four, she feels her messy life crumbling around her. But when the family gathers for her grandmother Addie’s ninety-ninth birthday, a relative lets slip hints about a long-buried family secret, leading Clemmie on a journey into the past that could change everything…

Growing up at Ashford Park in the heyday of Edwardian society, Addie has never quite belonged. When her parents passed away, she was taken into the grand English house by her aristocratic aunt and uncle, and raised side-by-side with her beautiful and outgoing cousin, Bea. Though they are as different as night and day, Addie and Bea are closer than sisters, through relationships and challenges, and a war that changes the face of Europe irrevocably. But what happens when something finally comes along that can’t be shared? When the love of sisterhood is tested by a bond that’s even stronger?

From the inner circles of British society to the skyscrapers of Manhattan and the red-dirt hills of Kenya, the never-told secrets of a woman and a family unfurl….”

THE ASHFORD AFFAIR received a starred review from Library Journal, and 4.5 stars from Romantic Times, which calls ASHFORD, “a novel that will transfix readers”.

    Can love endure across time?

Time travel! What is there not to love about a dashing seventeenth century cavalier and a thoroughly modern, no nonsense, twentieth century doctor?

When a seventeenth-century cavalier hurls himself over her garden wall, Doctor Jessica Shepherd is more angry than surprised. Although she ís no stranger to military re-enactors, there ís something different about Nathaniel Preston. If he ís to be believed, something…or someone…has sent him forward in time from the midst of a civil war to the quiet English countryside of the twentieth century.

With time working against them, Nathaniel has to convince Jessica why fate brought them together before he ís forced to return to his own era and certain death in battle.

Can the strength of love overcome all obstacles, even time itself?

Fish out of Water – 1 April from Escape Publishing

    It’s Stephanie Plum meets Splash!

Dirtwater’s straight-talking Deputy Sheriff has a lot on her plate: a nicotine addiction that’s a serious liability for a mermaid; a solider-of-fortune ex who’s hooked on her Mom’s brownies; a gorgeous, naked stranger in her shower; and a mysterious dead blonde with a fish tattoo on Main Street.

    Oh, and one other thing.

She’s scheduled to die on her thirtieth birthday – in three weeks – unless she can ‘change the course of destiny and save the world entire’. Throw in a Mom who’s the local Mayor and a Dad who’s been locked in the county jail for twelve years, and that’s all the trouble she needs without her mermaid roots coming back to haunt her.

Rania’s heading home to Aegira for a family wedding but she’s starting to have a sinking feeling that’s got nothing to do with hydroporting seven miles under the sea and everything to do with some weird connections that seem to be emerging between her, the dead blonde, her Mom’s shady past and a ten thousand year old prophesy. Now if she can just steal a corpse, get a crazy Aegirian priest off her case, work out who the hell’s trying to kill her and stop sleeping with the fishes, she might be able to unravel the prophesy, the mystery of the missing choirgirls and the secrets hidden in her Mom’s past.

And maybe even save her own ass while she’s at it.

Thanks for the opportunity to post. I have two upcoming releases.

The first is coming out Friday, March 29th, from Amira Press.

    Mated To The Devil

Not all pleasures are a sin…

Mina wants to put her seduction by a golden-eyed devil behind her, but the birth of her son, Jacques, renders that impossible. She tries to forget the only man who ever roused her passion, but when she notices her son exhibiting strange behavior—and less-than-human characteristics—she must face her past and learn to trust, and love, again.

Howling drunk, the one thing Remy clearly remembers is seducing Mina. A pity he didn’t think to get her address, especially since he marks her as his mate. When she disappears, he’s got plenty of time to regret, but he doesn’t get a chance to atone until she comes back into his life with an unexpected surprise.

Thrust into the role of father, Remy works to bond with his son while gaining forgiveness. But will he get the chance to truly make Mina his mate before danger threatens their fragile happiness?

    ~*~

My second offering is an indie title which comes out April 11th.

B785, Book 3 in the Cyborgs: More Than Machines series.

When cyborg intelligence meets sensual robotics, circuit boards sizzle.

Einstein was probably the only cyborg in existence with no interest in the opposite sex, until he discovered B785. With her sensual nature and quirky sense of humor, she draws this cybernetic geek out of his scientific shell and teaches him the one thing he’s never understood – passion.

Tired of being a slave to the military, Bonnie went to sleep one day with the intention of never waking up, but she didn’t count on a cybernetic prince charming bringing her back to life. Coming to terms with her past isn’t easy, but harder still is the realization that even a bionic princess can fall in love.

However, all fairy tales have a villain, and despite the fact the military wrote them both off as a loss, they soon discover they’ll need to fight to have their happily ever after.

    Never Say Never

    April 15th, 2013

When pretend turns to desire, heartbreak is unavoidable.

Sander Chase needs a date for his ex-fiancée’s engagement party, but he doesn’t have time for a woman in his life. Between working on the TV show Do You Have What It Takes? and his band reforming, he’s too busy for a relationship. What he needs is a pretend girlfriend. He thinks he may have found the perfect woman for the job, and the bribe he offers means she’s sure to accept.

After losing her job in the film industry, breaking up with her movie star boyfriend, and finding out her mum has dementia, Chloe Butler returned to the UK determined to put her life back together. The last thing she needs is to parade around London on the arm of a celebrity, and after the heartbreak caused by her ex, she swore she’d never again date a star. But when Sander offers her a chance at her dream job, it’s not something she can turn down.

As Chloe gets to know Sander she learns he’s nothing like her scumbag ex. But she struggles to fight her attraction to him, knowing their relationship is only for show and their separation date is closing in fast.

Ignoring the insane chemistry between them should be easy for Sander, especially since he carries a secret that means there can be no future for them, but the more time he spends with Chloe, the harder it is to keep his hands to himself.

Content Warning: contains more denial than you’ll find in a courtroom, more sexual tension than most people could handle, and explosive sex that some readers may find long overdue.

Angels’ Prey: Book I of the Dark Alchemy Series
    Viviacia K. Ahwen

    ONE WAS NEVER ENOUGH

Clarice Larrabee’s scandalous dalliances as a maid in the Oakesdale estate have her expelled to the Holy Order of St. Anne for a life of celibacy and repentance. Lord Frothingham’s calculated seduction and Clarice’s romance with his handsome son George led to her social and spiritual ruin, leaving her heartbroken, scorned, and bereft. There is no place in Victorian English society for a love so passionate, nor a will so bold, nor a mind so bright as Clarice Larrabee, who now dedicates herself to the convent, praying with all her might for redemption. Yet how long can she run from her true nature?

    HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF

An amorous visitation from an Angel named Jabazael reawakens the sensual side of Clarice, from which there is no turning back. After a night of wanton lust in the arms of this powerful being, she realizes her destiny is not within the confines of a manse, nor the walls of a cathedral, but in another realm altogether. After her surrender to Angel Jabazael, she encounters Daemon Maelfar, who reveals Clarice’s unique destiny as a receptacle of angelic light and diabolical darkness. But her role in the universal balance between good and evil can only begin after a ritual of erotic pleasure when both holy creatures share her body, where she eternally submits to become. . .

My second book, The First Move comes out April 2nd from Harlequin Superromance.

An unlikely encounter…but he’ll take it!

It seems like fate…or something! When Miles Brislenn spies the girl he had a crush on in high school-at his ex-wife’s wedding, no less-he can’t let the opportunity pass. He might not have had the courage to talk to Renia Milek back then, but he definitely does now. And that’s not the only thing that’s changed. Gone is the rebel Renia used to be. In her place is a beautiful woman who’s reserved, cautious…and holding on to secrets.

For Miles, this second chance with Renia is too important to let her past stand in their way. He’ll do whatever is necessary to help her accept her choices and move on-even if that means a salsa lesson or two! Because now that he’s made the first move, he wants the second to be hers.

The book is more angsty than the cover copy, so don’t be surprised if you pull out a tissue or two.

You can read an excerpt on my website, http://jenniferlohmann.com/booklist/the-first-move/.

If you enjoyed Boomerang Bride (winner of 2012 Rita for best single title contemporary romance), here’s another small town romance with loads of heart and humor.

Welcome to Whitetail, Wisconsin, future home of Weddings that WOW!

As acting mayor, Annika will do anything to revive the economy of the town that’s been her refuge ever since her art career imploded and her fiancé walked out. Even if it means crashing an engagement party to talk business with the bride’s billionaire father. But the evening starts with a kiss from a gorgeous stranger—and ends with a night in jail.

Finn Callahan can’t believe his sister is getting married, not after their parents’ disastrous track record. And he’d rather be anywhere than working from his family’s vacation home. Until he catches a leggy blonde sneaking in the window, and suddenly telecommuting for the season is very appealing.

Unable to resist their mutual attraction, Annika and Finn are soon mixing business and pleasure—just for the summer. Too bad Annika’s heart missed the memo about not falling in love…

Morning from snowy England and thanls DA!

I have a US edition of my summery single title contemporary romance out. ‘Girl vs Earl’ won the Festival of Romance Reader award for Best E book 2012 when it was published in the UK by Hachette Digital.

    Girl vs Earl

When Miranda finds herself fighting for her home, her job and her heart, sleeping with the enemy may not be the best tactic.

With no family of her own, Miranda Marshall has developed a healthy respect – some would say obsession – with other people’s histories. As property manager of a spectacular island castle in Cornwall, she’s made St Merryn’s Mount one of the UK’s most popular heritage attractions. While she may have the castle running like clockwork, Miranda hasn’t bargained on its sexy owner returning to claim his birthright.

Dark, handsome and with a rakish reputation, Jago, the Earl of St Merryn, not only looks like a pirate but is intent on flogging the Mount to a soulless leisure corporation. Miranda faces the battle of her life as she tries to persuade him to face up to his past and continue the St Merryn dynasty. But Jago has his own reasons for jumping ship and when he throws down the gauntlet to Miranda, she’s forced to delve into painful memories she’d much rather keep hidden.

    Prologue:

Over the last two hundred years, over thirty-thousand cat-shifters have been hunted and
destroyed. As far as Maya Saber can guess, only a few hundred still survive. Maya, the oldest known cat-shifter alive, has only one purpose in life now — to find and destroy the men who murdered her family, no matter how long it takes.
The unusual monsters, or what everyone thought were vampires, should’ve made sure
everyone had been killed that night so many centuries ago. Now that she was half Vamplien, (Maya’s personal nickname for the monsters) she and her cat sought only vengeance. How she ended up with a temporary family was still beyond her, but she couldn’t leave any of her feline friends alone. Banding together, her small, powerful group of women vowed to keep Detroit safe, while they searched for others of their kind. Each one has been trained by Dan Edwards, their human friend, in how to kill anyone threatening their home and territory.
Dan alone knows of their plight. Keeping their secret, he and a small group of detectives
organize the women, giving them a purpose and a reason to go on.
After fifty years, Maya finally has the name of the gang that destroyed her life. Randolph
Arrow and his followers, the Blood Gods, will die for their attack on her family. Maya was
determined to make sure each one paid for killing her kin.

@Coleen Kwan – can you tell us the difference between the Bliss and Brazen lines? Is it like closed door bedroom v open door? Or something else?

  30. Coleen Kwan
    Apr 06, 2013 @ 03:08:19

    @Jane:
Bliss stories are sweet romances. They focus on “family, home, a strong sense of community, and ultimately happiness.” No graphic language or sex scenes.

Brazen stories lean toward the opposite end of the spectrum, but are not erotic romance. They’re steamy stories with more explicit sex scenes.

BREATHE YOU IN by Lily Harlem

Sometimes you don’t realize how special a moment is until it’s a memory.

When he held me in his arms I saw a handsome, vibrant man with desire in his eyes and love in his heart. But Ruben Strong was more than that; he was a way out of my darkness, a glimmer of light peeking through my shroud—he was a piece of what I no longer had.

What he didn’t know, but I did, was that he’d been waiting for me. It had taken me time and courage to go looking for him, but if I hadn’t done what I’d done on my bleakest day, he wouldn’t have been there for me to find.

My tumbling decisions led to a meeting that tipped everything I thought I knew about myself upside down. While we were lying warm and naked in his bed, my old memories became new ones and our souls talked to each other in a way only we could understand. And our bodies, once we were brave enough to hum a quiet tune, quickly produced a beautifully sexy song that threw open the doors to love and laughter in my life once more.

Reader advisory – Breathe You In is a romance with themes of love, loss and hope and contains several explicit sex scenes.

    About Lily Harlem

Lily Harlem is a multi-published, award-winning author of contemporary erotic romance. She lives in the UK with her husband and a bunch of animals, all rescued, and loves to spend her days immersed in imagination.

Her books are a mixture of full-length novels and short stories, some are one offs, some are sequels or part of a series (all can be enjoyed as stand-alone reads). What they each have in common are colorful characters travelling on everyone’s favorite journey — falling in love. If the story isn’t deliciously romantic and down and dirty sexy, it won’t be written, at least not by Lily. So with the bedroom door left well and truly open you are warned to hang on for a steamy, sensual ride – or rides as the case might be!

FIRST REVIEW JUST IN – 5*

“This book is so wonderful I can’t even begin to express my feelings about it. Packed full of emotion. The writing is wonderful, the setting so vivid, and the relationship between this couple as it grows is so very real, so…just so brilliant.

I will NEVER forget this story. It’s one of those that will haunt my mind for years to come. If I think about it now, my eyes fill up. There comes a time when you pick up a book and sink into it right away. Breathe You In tugged so hard, kept me reading and rooting, and I must thank Ms Harlem for penning a story that will always be with me.”

My first attempt at a love story turned out to be so spicy I couldn’t publish it under my own name! It’s a contemporary novel with believable characters and fun dialogue. I’ve been encouraged by the reviews so far. It may not be “Fifty Shades of Gray” but I think readers will enjoy (and relate) to Jamie and Ben. I invite you all to check out “Worth the Wait” by Misty Austin on Amazon, Smashwords, Barnes and Noble and the publisher’s website, http://www.bluedragon-pub.com.

Jamie is settling into her new job in Washington DC. The last thing she needs is a distraction. Then she meets Ben. Charming, considerate, and, yes, sexy. She finds herself thinking about him more often than she should. She struggles to keep her feelings in check while he works his magic to draw her closer. He’s patient, but he can’t be expected to wait forever. Jamie needs time to discover.
