Am I the only Canadian who’s asked by Amazon to pay $1.49 to $3.50 for books that are free for others? So much for the Kindle PC app….

Is the Kindle PC app reliable? I haven’t gotten it yet because I saw it was still beta. It doesn’t, like, hijack your non-Kindle ebooks does it? (Yes, my paranoia is showing, why do you ask?)

Christine M: I’m in Canada too and I noticed the same thing the other day :( I downloaded the Kindle for PC App too, since I’d been missing all these free books that sounded great. Once I log in and I guess it gets that I’m in Canada, they’re no longer free. Maybe we should make new amazon accounts with Us addresses? I guess that would do it….. :)

@Caitie: Thing is, I wonder if I would have to register a credit card (and my cc are all attached to Canadian addresses) to open an account? (I’ve had my account with for almost 10 years so I don’t know what the policy is nowadays.)

Thing is, I wonder if it’s only Canadian who’re asked to pay for the freebies, or everyone who’s not American… Anyone else?

@MaryK: I really coudn’t say, I’m still trying to get my hands on some free Kindle books before loading anything on the PC Kindle app… but I think what I’ll do is set up a separate Kindle books folder so it doesn’t mess with my other ebooks.

@MaryK: I don’t think it hijacks your other ebooks at all. My Kindle books are saved in some random folder set up by the Kindle installation and it appears unique to the Kindle books.

@Jane: Okay. When I used to use the mobi reader, it was always trying to do things on its own.

@MaryK: Ohhh. Well, maybe the Kindle App will try to hijack your other mobi books. I don’t know….

@Jane: For free books, I guess it can’t hurt to try.

I’ve read of other people buying gift certificates on the US site and using them to fund purchases of US book. I’m not sure how well it works. I downloaded the Kindle app and it didn’t hijack my other mobi books either.

Jane, your recommendation for Susan Crandall is spot on! I just finished reading the two titles above, and your right. Susan Crandall is good. Very good!

I hope her backlist is as equally as strong. :D
