JOINT REVIEW: Kiss of Snow by Nalini Singh (and Giveaway)

Kiss of Snow by Nalini Singh

UPDATE: We’ve decouple the review from the giveaway because this is a book so many want to talk about. The review will be reposted on Monday in a new and separate post.

The winners have all been emailed.

1) Andy Swanson
2) Cath
3) Adrianne Robinson

5) Sera

NOTE FROM JANE: We have 8 copies of the hardcover debut from a Dear Author favorite, Nalini Singh. These 8 copies we will give away on Sunday to a random commenter to this post. This book engendered such a strong response that Janine and Shuzluva decided to do a joint review. There may be some spoilers in this review and if you don’t want to be spoiled, just skip to the comments section and leave a comment as to why you want to read Kiss of Snow. I’ll tell you my reason. Because Singh delivered everything she promised when Hawke and Sienna were first introduced in the first book in this series, Slave to Sensation. I’ve told anyone who asked that yes, this book is worth the hardcover price.

I, too, am anxiously awaiting the release of this book! Since I first started the Psy-Changeling series, I’ve been, well, enamored with Hawke. He’s such a strong character that it must have been both a trial and a treat to write this book. I can’t wait to read it!!

Of course, I also agree with you all that Vasic, Aden and Kaleb would be great main characters (for their own books, I mean). Of course, so would Jem and Kenji, Kit (eventually), and many others!

These books just make you dream of being in the Psy-Changeling world with these characters!

I’ve been dying for this book since book 1 so am definitely interested in the giveaway! Additionally, I have news on the audiobook front for this series – it’s being released by Tantor starting 4/25 with a simultaneous release for Kiss of Snow. Tantor is teaming up with All About Romance Blog (Speaking of Audiobooks) [ http://www.likesbooks.com/blog/?cat=174 ] to give away 10 copies of audiobook version of Slave to Sensation. The article with that giveaway will be posted 4/18

I am looking forward to this book. I cannot imagine it was an easy one to write with such a strong, anger filled main character and an powerful, younger reluctant love interest. Easy to lose this one to trite and sap.
I really hope Nalini writes about Vasic. Every time he is in a book he is so fascinating. It would be so interesting to see where his story would lead. I re-read Slave to Sensation as it remains my favorite of the series.

Nalini Singh has delivered one of the most consistently good series I’ve read in a long time. In most cases, it seems that authors run out of steam somewhere between three and five books. She’s kept going, and I’m really looking forward to Kiss of Snow.

Oh man. I am addicted to Singh’s lovers. She makes me re-read tropes that are usually deal-breakers for me: the seeming valuation of people based on their ability to wreak devastation, for one. The world of Psi and shapeshifter societies is boring and unconvincing as SF, but her relationship-building totally wins. I crave this book.

Complicated characters with emotional and physical layers (that are not immediately apparent), intricate main and sub-plots and an abilty to write hot love scenes that are tailored to the particular characters— what more can you ask? Maybe that Nalini has many more books in this series yet to be written. To top it all off, “Kiss of Snow” is her entry into the hardcover world. Congrats Nalini!

The next day I ordered online the rest of the series up to Branded by Fire (all that was out to that point). I have been anxiously following the series ever since. I rarely stay committed to series as I find the plot to grow thin and the characters to get watered down. Not so with this series, I love these books and this world is alive! I didn’t read the review because (a) I already know I want to read the book, and (b) I want to know as little about the book as possible before I read it. I want to be surprised. I am always worried when a book series makes the leap from paperback to hardcover. It usually signals the beginning of the end (i.e., quality and originality decreases when cover price increases), but I have hopes that Nalini Singh will be an exception.

I had been vaguely disdainful of adult paranormal romance until I discovered Nalini Singh’s books. Shame on me. They blew me away with the beautiful writing, sizzling romance and the complex social politics of the series story arc. I skipped the review, as I’m wary of spoilers, but I would love an advance copy.

I am so sick to my stomach, I will read anything that mentions this book, as I am trying to steel myself so I don’t read any spoilers but I am weak as all get out!!!!!!!! i think that as long as you are 18 and over you have the right to date anyone 18 or older. i think to broadly say that one is more mature/less mature due to age or would respond a certain way due to abuse/neglect is unfair. personal hang ups do not negate the sincerity of a relationship and there are many relationships that exist with such an age gap that work as those that don’t. I cannot wait for the book and will not get my hopes up for a chance at winning. I pre-ordered the nook book.

A friend of mine introduced me to Nalini Singh two months ago and I got caught up on the series in a couple of weeks. I have re-read thee books several times (Brenna and her sexy Psy assassin are my faves). The world Nalini created is so intricate and smoking hot that I can’t get enough of it. I’ve been going slowly mad waiting for Hawke and Sienna. Don’t think the age difference will be much of an issue, I’m sure Miss Nalini’s got it covered.

I’ve got my heart set on a Kaleb book sometime in the not too distant future. That damn Psy is just soooo intriguing. Nalini totally rocks….

I want to see how Nalini is able to work around the concept of mate that she has created so far. I am also very interested in finding out whether Silence actually falls. How it happens. And I want to find out more about The Ghost and Kaleb. I want to understand Sienna’s power and, if Silence does fall, what will replace it. How will the Council sort out its differences, and more detailed information about Nikita. I can’t wait. Too many exciting possibilities.

I got interested in the Psy-Changeling series reading the back blurb of ‘Caressed by Ice’ (Judd’s story) but I got the feeling this was a series best read in order, so I bought the first 3 books, one per payday and loved each one, knowing the next installment was just a half-month away. Then when ‘Caressed by Ice’ was finished, I was stuck waiting until the next one was published. The Psy-Changeling series is one those series that as soon as I know the pub date of the next one, I write it down in my calendar. When I heard that ‘Kiss of Snow’ was coming out in hardcover, my wallet let out a moan of distress but I cheered for Nalini, since I know the jump to hardcover is a sign of ‘making it big.’ Since I won’t be able to afford ‘KoS’ in hardcover, I requested that the library order it, so I could be first to read it whenever it arrived at the library. But there’s only so much money they have available, so there’s no way to know when it’ll be purchased. Then I’ll have to wait a full year before I can own my own paperback copy. So I’m jumping at the chance to get a copy when it comes out!

Thank you Janine and Shuzluva for a terrific and thought-provoking review (not too mention making me even crazier to read ‘KoS’)and thank you Nalini for writing stories that are some of the best I’ve ever read.

I’d be thrilled to win, I have missed a few books in the series but the latest definitely sucked me back in. I just hope this contest is open internationally!

Thank you for the review! I can´t wait for this book to come out, it´s been a long wait.
I ordered this book so, that it will be in my doorsteps ( in Finland) within 3-4 days of it´s publising date! But still it is some time to go….

I have dropped out of an untold number of paranormal series over the years. Nalini Singh is the only paranormal author that remains an auto-buy for me and her series are the only ones that I continue to follow with great eagerness. I have been counting down the days until Kiss of Snow’s release, getting over my initial irritation about the switch to hardcover release. Just last night I was up late scouring the Internet for any spoilers I can find. I nearly jumped for joy when I saw this blog heading! Thanks for the opportunity to win a copy of this book!

I really really wanna read this book…mostly cos i stumbled upon singh’s psy/changeling series at a very difficult point in my life and they literally saved me. Everytime I felt sad or disappointed i would pick up SLAVE TO SENSATION or Clay and Talin’s book and I’d feel emotionally buoyed up. I’ve noticed the chemistry between Hawke and Sienna from the very beginning and I’ve really wanted to read Hawke’s book ever since he admits to his mate being dead to Sascha. Hawke is exactly the sort of guy a girl goes crazy over…handsomein a rugged way..wounded where you can’t see but can sense..and hence you want to heal him. And Sienna is an X-Psy. They’re supposed to be non-existent ..or at best dead at an early age..yet here she is…I mean c’mon..it just doesn’t get any better.

I’ve been dying to put my hands on this book!!!!!! So I’m gonna skip the review……….until I can’t help myself anymore anyway.

Hawke is one of those characters that just get’s to you. This lonely and powerfull man that’s been fighting that atraction for two years. That takes strengh and character.

And Sienna, powderkeg Sienna, what is she after all. What can she do?? The first time I was introduced to Sienna she looked like a strong kid, treated as an equal by the rest of the Laurens, that just like to infuriate autorative figures.

In Branded by Fire when she had that tal with Sacha and wisperers Hawke’s name, it nearly broke my heart.

Like I said, I’m dying to get this book. I know it’s gonna be amazingly well written, I know it’s gonna have a hell of a background story, but most of all it’s gonna have an Alpha that lost it’s mate (God, I hope not) and the girl strong enough to take him on.

I’m bitting my nails thinking if I should read the review…..

You’re saying the book was gripping? The review you gave was gripping! I wanted to read the book so bad that I did my share of begging for excerpts on Nalini Singh’s Facebook page, but now that desire has trippled! Would love to win a copy, just to put me out of my misery, but I could also wait until may 31st, I guess. Lol.

I really want to read this book because it has so much promise . . . which has been building right from the start of this fantastic series. There are soooo many questions that need to be answered – Sienna’s Psy designation and her incredible powers, Hawke and the fact that he has already met his mate . . . Lucas & Sasha and the start of the next generation, the Ghost . . . . . and also I want to be convinced that Sienna is right for Hawke, as at this moment I have niggling reservations regarding her maturity/match for him . ..

**THUD** Faints dead away with the anticipation

I’m really waiting for Kiss of Snow — so much that I just pre-ordered it in spite of my self imposed ban on pre-ordering books…

@ Shuzluva: I was bothered by “the lack of a positive submissive male model” in Play of Passion as well – and I think I know which other plot point you are referring to.
This series is one I actually re-read on a regular basis, so I have to call myself a fan, but the more I read and re-read the more the traditional gender roles bug me. In some books, and especially the last short story, I noticed a show/tell difference: I was told the heroine was strong but she acted just the other way. This might be a topic for a seperate discussion?

Please, please let me win a copy of Kiss of Snow! Nalini Singhs Psy-changeling series has captured my heart, I’ve re-read my books dozens of times, her world is so complex I would love to be able to create something so amazing myself – this series inspires me, I’ve created a whole series of fan videos and art based on the series.
I’ve arranged for this book (like all of the others) to be shipped from the US when it’s released but will be away with work for a whole week when my book arrives, I’m so disappointed! Winning a copy of Kiss of Snow would make my year :)
