Into the Crossfire by Lisa Marie RicePamela Spengler-Jaffee, the publicist for HarperCollins, emailed me yesterday and asked if I was interested in doing a giveaway to support the troops and celebrate their service. Absolutely! Together we came up with the following. LIsa Marie Rice writes books about former special forces heroes. Her 2010 book is Into the Crossfire features Sam Reston, a former Navy SEAL. We are giving away 10 copies of Into the Crossfire to any random commenter.

But that is not all. Regardless of whether you comment or how many people comment, HarperCollins is donating a couple hundred books through books for soldiers AND a brand new K3. To match that, Dear Author is also going to be donating a K3 to the ebooks for soldiers.

If you would like to get involved here are the two links:

Additionally, Dear Author is interested in adopting a platoon and if you are interested in helping us do this, drop me an email and let me know what you would be interested in doing. I’ve emailed the Adopt a Platoon organization to find out what kind of commitment would be required of us and how we can best help to boost troop morale.

Thanks guys and happy reading.

I think it is a great idea to send some K3’s to the soldiers. I have donated many well loved books to be sent overseas and I think the Kindles will help keep our service men and women occupied in their down time!

    Want!

Also, do you think they’d be interested in my first gen Kindle? I got a 3rd gen for Christmas, and gave the old one to my mom, but I don’t think she’s using it at all. I’d much rather it go to someone who’ll get some use from it! It still works really well (in fact, aside from the design issues, I thinks it’s better than the newer ones!).

@Cassie: No, they accept only the K2 and above.

@Lisa Hutson: No, but right now we get a $25 GC with the purchase of the Kindle and that will be sent to the troops as well.

I have 20+ years working for various VA hospitals around the country. I see firsthand the end result of what wars and other conflicts can do to our servicefolk on a daily basis. Each and every one of them are big heroes in my mind. Whether they end up stronger or broken as a consequence of their sacrifices, they deserve our unending support, God bless them all!

I can’t say enough about Operation Paperback. It enables readers to donate paperback books (new or used) to troops looking for specific titles, genres, and/or subjects. So many of my friends have received books from generous readers – it makes a difference.

And for those seeking to support deployed troops, the USPS has discounted its large flat rate priority mail book for APO/FPO addresses. Instead of the regular price of $14.95, you only pay $12.95. It offers the best way to ship stuff to the desert (in terms of cost and time).

I find it really weird how the death of Osama Bin Laden has created this huge interest in military romance. Did people seriously not know about it before?! It’s my absolute favourite subgenre!

Here in Australia we have ANZAC Day, and once a year everyone remembers the military exists. America has a much better track record with respecting their soldiers than Australia does. My father fought in Vietnam in the 1960s (as a conscript, so he had no choice), and it wasn’t until 1987 Australia recognised those who fought in Vietnam. There were huge groups of idiotic protestors who prevented food supplies being sent to the soldiers! It’s easy to get all political and start hating on the wrong people, but those men weren’t in the wrong! Those in the military always deserve respect.

I love Lisa Marie Rice’s books! I haven’t read Into the Crossfire yet, but it’s on my list.

There’s another great organization called SOS America that helps support soldiers too. Kim Adams from SOS Aloha (she just posted an earlier comment as Kim from Hawaii) has been a great promoter for their cause, so if any readers or authors want to get in touch with her to see what they might donate, I’m sure she would love it.

    May 05, 2011 @ 13:03:49

Well one “troop” here is saying a huge THANK YOU! The books that have been donated by those organizations as well as individuals have certainly made the deployments especially for those who don’t have a lot of other comforts better. Plus it reminds us that people who don’t know us individually care about what we are doing and that we are away from home. Thank you again.

  44. Kim in Hawaii
    May 05, 2011 @ 13:05:21

@Sabrina: My Air Force man indulges me in my romance habit, including conventions!

The Navy Seals justly deserve our praise this week but it is team work from all five services plus other civilian entities which enable us to celebrate our freedom. A big Mahalo to them all!

    May 05, 2011 @ 17:17:32

@Kristen: This is a great question! Start with the two organizations that Jane listed – I am familiar with Operation Paperback but not Books for Soldiers. Operation Paperback specifically lists what book genres, authors, or titles that deployed troops are looking for. If neither organziation need romances, then consider some other options:

    – USO Airport lounges (www.uso.org)
    – libraries on a military installation (if you live near one, google “library on Fort X”)

If you run into road blocks, contact me at [email protected] I know a Navy doctor in Afghanistan and a Marine Mom in Iraq – both are romance fans!

Fantastic idea! I sent care packages when my husband was in Desert Storm. Now I’m sending care packages to my son in Afghanistan. My husband has decided to take this to “extreme care packaging.” I think we will end up adopting my son’s platoon just based on the number of packages we send.

What an awesome idea! I have sent many boxes of books to the military – fiction, romance, mystery, etc. From the letters back, both men and women LOVE getting books. What a fabulous idea! If I don’t win the giveaway, I will be buying this (I’m always on the lookout for new authors).

I’m going to do the eBooks for Troops as well.

    Thanks for doing this!

What a great idea. My husband is currently deployed to Afghanistan and I regularly include paperbacks (and even the occasional hardcover if he special requests it) for him in his care packages. I’ve even repurchased the entire set of Temeraire books for him because I first bought them for my Kindle.

This is Wonderful!!! My husband’s BFF is overseas. I told him it would up his standing with the ladies if he let me send all my old romances to him to distribute :)
