My two favorite books this year were published several years ago: “Case Histories” and “Started Early, Took My Dog”, both by Kate Atkinson. They are the first and latest in her Jackson Brodie series of mysteries, but they are much more than just puzzles to be sorted out. I like her voice and her characters, and she also has an understated sense of humor that I find appealing. It doesn’t hurt that the BBC series stars Jason Isaacs, and it’s a pleasure imagining him as Jackson in each of the four books (so far) in the series.

They did not come out this year but I started and finished the Deacon Chalk – Occult Bounty Hunter series by James R Tuck.

I had the preview for book one sitting in my kobo library reminding me that it got a good review and I was interested and someone keeps publishing kobo discount codes – so I bought book one and was very soon back for books two and three.

My favorite book this year has to be Friends without Benefits by Penny Reid. Her hero, Nico Mangeniello, is one of the sweetest (and hottest) heroes I’ve read in a long time. It’s rare in this world of gruff alpha males to find a man who isn’t afraid to be emotionally vulnerable – a testament to the true power and strength of love.

I know I’m being repetitive, but this is too darn hard! Favorite book read all year? Or just narrowing it down to books published this year? This would be easier if there were categories like favorite YA or favorite holiday book. Um…. possibly “Naked Once More” by Elizabeth Peters because it’s a re-read that I enjoy every time but then again, “Delta of Venus” was a surprise for me because it was a classic that I actually enjoyed. “Love Irresistibly” and “Three Sisters” were also books that struck me as five stars when I read them the first time. But I think that “Naked Once More” is probably the winner.
