Have been in a reading slump for a while — nothing has “wow”ed me, most everything has just been “meh”.
Hopefully the new year will be better.
The last book I really loved and read as soon as it was downloaded to my Kindle was Captain Vorpatril’s Alliance by Lois Bujold. Have been waiting for Ivan’s story for a long time.
However, I just downloaded Alien Research by Gini Koch — maybe some time with Jeff and Kitty will bring me out of my slump.

After Hours by Cara McKenna was my top contemporary read this year. I love how McKenna writes working-class and deliciously-but-believably flawed characters. The unusual setting (the H/h worked in a mental health facility) and great dialogue stuck with me long after I finished the book. Loved it.

While I loved books from a number of favorite authors this year. In this group I am thinking of Cara McKenna, Sarah MacLean, Eloisa James, Charlotte Stein, Ruthie Knox, Kristin Higgins, Juliana Ross and Tamara Morgan. But a book came along this year at the exact moment in time for it to have the biggest impact on me due to the conflict the hero is facing, so I would say The Story Guy by Mary Ann Rivers.

I really enjoyed new additions to series books: Thankless in Death by JD Robb and Through the Evil Days by Julia Spencer-Fleming. I wouldn’t say each book was the best individual book in each of the series, but I really enjoy these series in particular. Luckily the next JD Robb will be out on 2/25/2014. The next Julia Spencer-Fleming is probably a year away.

My memory is so bad I’d have to look over my Goodreads list to remember my favorite book of this year. Since I’m too lazy to do that, I’ll just go with Julia Spencer-Fleming’s latest Russ/Clare mystery. Not because it was the best book I read all year, but it was highly anticipated because I had to wait so long to read it.

I feel that 2013 has been a pretty blah year for books for me. I’ve read several things that I like, but nothing that I’ve loved. I looked forward to several books from favorite authors, and I actually have a bunch at home that I didn’t even finish. Carrie Vaughn! Julia Spencer-Fleming! Seanan McGuire!!!!! I think that I could make a case for three books I’ve read this year being co-favorites: Into the Deep by Samantha Young, Nerd Girl by Sue Lee, and Out of Turn by Tiffany Snow. They’re wildly different books, with characters at different stages of their lives, but something about these books stuck with me. I feel that January, when the next book in the Into the Deep series is supposed to come out, is too far away.

I am excited that Alice Clayton’s third Redhead Chronicles book is coming out next week. NEXT WEEK, BIZNITCHES!!!

Ahem. I’m a windsock, so am completely drawing a blank on titles — sorry. I know I really enjoyed the latest from Nora, Jill Shalvis and Kristan Higgins for contemporaries, some by Sarah Morgan, Shannon Stacey, and Pam Morsi among others. I’ve also begun reading a boatload of historicals lately, which is a new thing for me. I’ve enjoyed Sherrie Thomas, a lot of Loretta Chase’s backlist (not sure when that last dress book was released), as well as some by Tessa Dare, Lorraine Heath, Sarah McLaine and Eloisa James, to name a handful.

Favorite book of 2013? I have to go with Heart of Obsidian, even though I read some other really awesome books. Because I felt like I was waiting forever for that book and it didn’t disappoint me when I read it the day it came out. Thanks for the chance to win and for this awesome website!

My favorite book of 2013 … Ooh, that’s a hard one. I honestly didn’t read that many traditional books this year. Low funds had me going back to the basics and I read a lot of fanfic. I would say “You cannot live as I have lived (and not end up like this” was pretty good.

My two favorite books this year were published several years ago: “Case Histories” and “Started Early, Took My Dog”, both by Kate Atkinson. They are the first and latest in her Jackson Brodie series of mysteries, but they are much more than just puzzles to be sorted out. I like her voice and her characters, and she also has an understated sense of humor that I find appealing. It doesn’t hurt that the BBC series stars Jason Isaacs, and it’s a pleasure imagining him as Jackson in each of the four books (so far) in the series.

I did really like the newest Pink Carnation novel and I’ve recently started the Lucky Harbor series by Jill Shalvis–starting with the 2 most recent books. I loved Always on My Mind, but I don’t know if it is my favorite. The newest Karen Rose book was awesome.

It’s rare in this world of gruff alpha males to find a man who isn’t afraid to be emotionally vulnerable – a testament to the true power and strength of love.

It’s hard for me to choose, but I think I’m going to have to go with Magic Rises. I’ve reread my digital copy several times and listened to the audiobook as well. Kate Daniels is pretty much my ultimate hero!

There were so many good books this year! The Heiress Effect by Courtney Milan was delightful. I am eagerly anticipating reading The Countess Conspiracy, probably before anyone can get it for me for Christmas.

I also enjoyed Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, which I read in one sitting (with breaks for beverages).

I think my favorites read this year have probably been Tenea B. Johnson’s Smoketown (go read! Beautiful style and images, and a really interesting post-climate-change, post-disease world in a gated city that outlaws birds.) and Alaya Dawn Johnson’s The Summer Prince.

Favorite books I read in 2013 (that I remember at the moment):
    Among Others by Jo Walton
    Game Change
Her Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik
Irregulars – Josh Lanyon and others
A Soldier’s Heart by Kathleen Korbel – I read this in the 90s when it came out and finally tracked it down and re-read it this year and it’s still REALLY GOOD

Favorites that actually came out in 2013:
From out in the Cold by LA Witt
    Magpie Lord – KJ Charles

    And many more. Thanks DA!

I’m going to keep coming back to check the responses. I need more good books to read! This year was light on good books for me as well.

One book I really enjoyed was Duke of Midnight by Elizabeth Hoyt. It made me cry — in a good way of course (which is the highest compliment I can pay).

Argh, book in 2013? Well I finally got around to starting the Dark-Hunter series in 2013 – so any of those really (except the Dream-Hunters), I “found” Sarah Maclean’s historicals and they are great. Ditto Jacqueline Carey’s Agent of Hel series. James Elliot’s Charming. Can you tell I am going down my Goodreads four stars or more list for 2013?

    Dec 13, 2013 @ 07:47:41

I know I’m being repetitive, but this is too darn hard! Favorite book read all year? Or just narrowing it down to books published this year? This would be easier if there were categories like favorite YA or favorite holiday book. Um…. possibly “Naked Once More” by Elizabeth Peters because it’s a re-read that I enjoy every time but then again, “Delta of Venus” was a surprise for me because it was a classic that I actually enjoyed. “Love Irresistibly” and “Three Sisters” were also books that struck me as five stars when I read them the first time. But I think that “Naked Once More” is probably the winner.

I don’t know. I stopped keeping my geeky personal spreadsheet this summer because I kept forgetting to update it. But in the first half of the year:
    Gone Girl (Flynn)
    The Best Man (Higgins)
Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking (Cain)
    Sacre Bleu (Moore)

And I have to add: John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars
The Perks of Being a Wallflower (who’s that by?)
    Hyperbole and Half

Oh yeah! Heart of Obsidian by N. Singh

Honestly, And The Mountains Echoed. But as for romance, I can’t think of one best, but I read Thief of Shadows (which isn’t a 2013 release) which was my first Elizabeth Hoyt, and wow did that start me on a Hoyt backlist shopping spree and got me back into liking historicals.

Loved, loved, LOVED Elizabeth Hoyt’s latest in the Maiden Lane series, The Duke of Midnight. Though I did spend a good half hour going around muttering, “He’s being such an a$$hole!” (I was listening to the audio on my iPod, and sad to say my kids barely batted an eyelash at the crazy mom muttering to herself while she made dinner). He managed to come around at the end, though, fortunately.

    Sooooo good.

I just found and am excited about having another source for book reviews. Narrowing my favorite book for 2013 to one would be difficult. I read each In Death novel from J.D. Robb and enjoy watching the interactions of Eve Dallas and other characters. I discovered Cat Johnson and liked her Red, Hot & Blue novel, Trey. Probably my favorite of the bunch is either The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After (a selection of 2nd epilogues after the Bridgeton series) by Julia Quinn or The Ugly Duchess by Eloisa James.
