Have been in a reading slump for a while — nothing has “wow”ed me, most everything has just been “meh”.
Hopefully the new year will be better.
The last book I really loved and read as soon as it was downloaded to my Kindle was Captain Vorpatril’s Alliance by Lois Bujold. Have been waiting for Ivan’s story for a long time.
However, I just downloaded Alien Research by Gini Koch — maybe some time with Jeff and Kitty will bring me out of my slump.

After Hours by Cara McKenna was my top contemporary read this year. I love how McKenna writes working-class and deliciously-but-believably flawed characters. The unusual setting (the H/h worked in a mental health facility) and great dialogue stuck with me long after I finished the book. Loved it.

While I loved books from a number of favorite authors this year. In this group I am thinking of Cara McKenna, Sarah MacLean, Eloisa James, Charlotte Stein, Ruthie Knox, Kristin Higgins, Juliana Ross and Tamara Morgan. But a book came along this year at the exact moment in time for it to have the biggest impact on me due to the conflict the hero is facing, so I would say The Story Guy by Mary Ann Rivers.

I feel that 2013 has been a pretty blah year for books for me. I’ve read several things that I like, but nothing that I’ve loved. I looked forward to several books from favorite authors, and I actually have a bunch at home that I didn’t even finish. Carrie Vaughn! Julia Spencer-Fleming! Seanan McGuire!!!!! I think that I could make a case for three books I’ve read this year being co-favorites: Into the Deep by Samantha Young, Nerd Girl by Sue Lee, and Out of Turn by Tiffany Snow. They’re wildly different books, with characters at different stages of their lives, but something about these books stuck with me. I feel that January, when the next book in the Into the Deep series is supposed to come out, is too far away.

I am excited that Alice Clayton’s third Redhead Chronicles book is coming out next week. NEXT WEEK, BIZNITCHES!!!
