happy birthday! since I discovered Dear Author, it’s become my go-to place for recommendations (I may not always agree with the reviewer’s tastes, but I can always tell from a review whether I’ll like the book or not), news, and deals. You’ve turned me into a Loretta Chase and Courtney Milan fan, for which I thank you.

I do wish that you’d review more indy books, although from the few you have reviewed is seems like your luck with indy books is like mine, disappointing. But thank you for reading them so I don’t have to!

Happy Anniversary! Happy Birthday! Wishing you all many, many more.

You’ve successfully grown by leaps and Js.

Your reviews are always helpful and interesting, but I have to admit that what I’ve loved the most over the years are the threads of wank and what-thefuckery. So fun especially when they’re off the chain and crazy.

Thanks to all of you for your hard work and love of the romance genre. Cheers!

Happy Anniversary, DA! What I love most about Dear Author is the completely thorough reviews. You’ve widened my overall reading net, for which I can only be grateful. I’m also loving the new Recommended Read Saturday feature. While it has yet to turn me onto a new author, I figure it’s only a matter of time, and I can’t wait.

I’m a fairly new romance reader, but I feel very lucky that I found you early on! I’d love to see more lists of various readers’ favorite books or the “canon” for various genres. I’m still catching up, and I find that sort of thing — both the recommendations but also the thought process and the inevitable debate — fascinating.

    Happy Birthday!

As a reader, I like that your reviews are detailed and thorough; I’ve found some great books through your recommendations.

And as an author, I like that your reviews are detailed and thorough! Your ‘grades’ tend to be lower than at other sites, but the opinions are backed up with plenty of evidence, and I can really learn from your reviews, whether of my work or someone else’s.

    Happy Birthday, Dear Author.

I like that through all the changes DA remains a site that has an uncluttered layout. It’s usually easy to find things. I love the numbered comments in posts and the recent comments on the side bar. DABWAHA, the multiple news roundups each week, and sales alerts are some of my favorite features.

I also like that, for the most part, even when posters disagree things remain civil.

I lurked for a long time before I started to comment, but glad I finally jumped in. I also cannot thank Jane enough for introducing Calibre to me.

Happy Birthday :-) Thanks to you guys I discovered Sarah Mayberry, Dropbox and how to organize the more than 1000 books in my Calibre library. DA is my go-to place for reviews. I seldom buy a book without checking out the review on DA. So thank you and happy anniversary!

Happy Anniversary! (Or birthday–it’s still a celebration!) The one thing (okay there are a lot of things but…) y’all do really well is the reviews. I might not do more than glance through if it’s a subgenre I don’t read, but I know they’ll be honest, no matter the author being reviewed.

    Happy birthday!

Dear Author is a favorite blog for me. I love the midday links and deals posts. The discussions are always interesting. I now know the reviewers my taste syncs with, so I know I will get a good rec from them.

This is the site that helped me decide which e-reader to go with and I haven’t been sorry since I purchased my first one.

    Apr 08, 2012 @ 13:35:55

*sobs into an already soaked hankie* All so grow up. Happy birthday, Jane, Jayne and the DA team!

You’ve already heard all this: I would like to see more reader-oriented articles and discussions. Dry publishing and technology industry news generally bore me as those seem to be mostly for authors. So I’m hoping for more reader news and perhaps more book lists or recommendations. And solutions for readers! Such as practical tips for book hoarders (print and digital). Although I’m now a digital book reader, I still have print books in this house and I struggle to find space for those. Oh, I especially welcome suggestions on how to stop buying books so impulsively. <_<

As for DA podcasts and video interviews, I wish transcripts (and subtitles if possible) were available. I know I'm pretty much alone in this, but I'm not that keen on most author interviews. I do love DA Alyson's interviews, though. Probably because those interviews are more about books than authors themselves, so any interview she's involved with is usually appreciated.

Like: DA doesn't seem to allow itself to be complacent, so we get to see new features, little changes, adaptations, quick and friendly responses to technical and cosmetic issues, a wide range of topics, platforms and, while romance is still the primary focus, reviews of various genre books and other forms of entertainment (such as Jayne's Friday Film Review feature). All these usually keep my interest hooked on DA, which I appreciate and love.

Favourite times: Opinion pieces, editorial features and comparison pieces, and the discussions those generate. I quite enjoy people (both contributors and respondents) here as well.

Again, Happy Sixth Birthday! And thank you. (Please don't enter my comment for the giveaway.)

    Apr 08, 2012 @ 13:38:34

I love this site so much. I visit it on a daily basis, though I don’t really comment much (I generally never do), but this seems like a good opportunity to say how much I appreciate this site and the reviews here. I like how honest they are. I don’t usually go by reviews to buy books, but I have bought a few based on recs here (Cara McKenna’s books spring to mind), and I’ve always enjoyed them :)

So just keep doing what you do, and I’ll keep happily reading :)

    Apr 08, 2012 @ 13:39:47

Congratulations! I may not agree with a few things or all the time, but DA provides me with a lot of information all wrapped up in convenience, and I’ve also learned quite a bit just by visiting and reading blog posts and comments. My favorite posts are those involving news and technology (if it weren’t for DA and Ridley, I would have never figured out the whole DRM thing, as it was all gibberish to me and I didn’t even know where to start). I appreciate all the hard work that you ladies put into making the blog successful. It shows that you do care for what you do and for the community you started here.
Okay, I’ll stop kissing up now. :P

I am a DA fan. I love pretty much everything about it. The new recommends feature is going to be great. I like the fact that y’all interact with your readers, responding to questions about reviews, commenting on questions brought up in the comments of your readers, just a general accessibility to the DA family. Here is to another great year of DA.

Happy Birthday!! I love reading about industry news, but I also enjoy the reviews. I’ve found some great reads through this site, some that I enjoyed more than the reviewer did. Your reviews are thorough enough for me to decide if it’s something I’d like or not, and I appreciate it.

I’ve starred the articles regarding Calibre in my feed reader so I can go back and read them to customize my copy of Calibre . . . so appreciative of the time it took to share that with us. Thank you. And Happy 6th Birthday!

Congratulations to the Dear Author team for these 6 years of wonderful work. I’ve been a lurker for several years now, but Dear Author is one of the sites I follow daily and where I get part of my reading inspiration. The reviews continue to be my favorite times here. Really enjoy your reviews, and have discovered several new authors through your site. I like the midday updates/ news/ deals section, and finally, your ereader information is invaluable. Congratulations on reaching six years. I think I’ve been around for four or so years? But I have always appreciated the variety of information you put out – I use you to figure out what books to buy next (I’m on a pretty tight budget unfortunately), keep abreast of publishing news (who doesn’t want to be a writer?), as well as the tech news. The fun bits you do too, like March Madness with SBTB, are great. Thanks for providing a great corner of the internet!

Happy birthday, Dear Author! I haven’t commented much but I’ve been a faithful reader for years. I love the reviews, which have prompted me to buy many a book, but I’d also love to see more of the themed posts, like a look at a particular aspect of romance novels. Like alpha males, or forced seduction, or historical inaccuracy. I remember reading some posts along those lines, and would love more. Thanks for all you do!

I like the reviews, deals (even though many of them are not available in Canada) and the e-reader comparison which helped me decide which unit to go with. Ive been reading romance since my teens. After 30 years it has gotten harder to find books that entice me to buy, let alone actually read. I have a lot of unread stuff on my Kindle. I no longer spend hours in the bookstore browsing (i miss Borders) and online browsing is more frustrating that enjoyable. I have been introduced to more new to me authors since finding Dear Author. Your new posts with recommendations and excerpts have resulted in purchases in the last few weeks. Thanks for helping to keep reading fun!

In addition to your reviews, I like the various industry-related articles that you blog about – especially the technical ones. The research shows! And a techno-geek like me truly appreciates it.

    Happy Birthday, Dear Author!!!

I first came across your site about 2 years ago via following a link of a link of a link. I looked around and was immediately impressed by the mix of romance novels (in a variety of permutations), YAs and articles on epublishing.

One of the reasons I’ve continued to come back here is the honesty of your posts. Even when I’ve disagreed (which happens every blue moon or so, *g*) , there’s always a point or two I’ve nodded my head to. Because you guys might be (awesomely) snarky, but you’re also thoughtful and (even better) inclusive. \Dear Author/!

Happy Birthday! I enjoy reading the reviews as well as keeping up with all the new releases and sales, but my favorite thing about Dear Author is how invaluable the posts have been when I was new to the world of ereaders and ebooks. You all saved me from many hours of headaches and temper tantrums, I’m sure ;)

Happy Birthday DA! I like it that sometimes you also branch outside the romance books, I always enjoy your reviews about YA books and other genres. Not being much of a romance reader myself, I think this is an excellent way to attract a wider range of readers, who will then see what good info you also give out about the book industry and about e-books. I much appreciate the contests you hold, too.

Happy Anniversary and many more to Dear Author! I really appreciated all the posts about various types of ereaders and assorted technology/apps that go along with reading today. It really helped me before our house got iPad or Kindle and it still helps us with figuring out how to move books and protect them. Plus you’re entertaining. So TY and Happy Anniversary again!

    Happy Birthday, Dear Author!

Naturally the thing I love most are the reviews. The format is ingenious, for starters, not to mention engaging, interesting, and entertaining. You guys really know your stuff too. You know how to deconstruct bad writing and what makes good writing good – and you explain it in such a sublime way for us uninitiated. Your reviews are witty, humorous, incisive and insightful. And you don’t just review books, but observe and draw attention to the direction of the industry – so many fascinating discussions! Thank you for your contribution to the literary world over the past 6 years – you’ve been enjoyed by many, many people.

    Apr 08, 2012 @ 16:24:14

    Happy Birthday!

I love your tech breakdowns of different e-readers, and how you can optimize your reading through various plug-ins and programs to organize your books. I’ve learned so much. The reviews are amazing as well – so thoughtful, so detailed and so carefully considered. They have caused me to explore different books and to check out new titles that I might not have otherwise considered; thank you for that.

As a teacher, I love your format. I’ve used it (with full credit – but careful editing of sample pages!!) as a teaching tool, and my students have LOVED the alterative to the traditional book report. This site has inspired many of my own students to start blogging in their own format about YA books – and anything that encourages kids to read and write is amazing.

Thanks and congratulations – here’s to many more years online!

    Happy Anniversary, Dear Author!

I love how DA is unafraid to discuss controversial issues. Things do get heated, but I’m glad the community has been, for the most part, respectful. I’m glad the moderation has been minimum, used only to keep the topic on task.

I love how DA is unabashedly pro-readers. Please keep doing those weekly industry news, those open threads for readers, those in-depth cover stories like Fifty Shades and fanfiction.

I love how DA actually use the entire range of your grade scale in your reviews, including the much-debated-over DNF. Please keep your standard high, and demand more from your books.

Finally, I love how DA re-invent its website every year and still look spiffy. I hate websites, as they get older and bigger, becomes busy-looking. Please always be clean, spacious, and simple. The content is what is important.

Thank you and here’s to another wonderful year. Cheers!

Happy Anniversary! I’m a fairly new romance reader (my first love has always been scifi and fantasy), and even newer to your site so I’m loving going archive diving and reading the past reviews and stuff, it’s so nice when you have lots and lots of a new site to investigate. I’d love to see more lists of genre favorites you shouldn’t miss and top whatever-number-you-like (like Danbey’s top -current- thirty historical romance novels), things that are a good place for romance newbies to start. It’s a little bewildering with all the choices out there, trying to decide the all important question of “what to read next?”

    Apr 08, 2012 @ 17:07:23

Happy bday, DA! I found you last year (around this date, actually) through one of your “If You Like” posts. I had never read romance before, but I was down with the flu and someone gave me a book they described as a guaranteed pick-me-up (I think it was a Julia Quinn) and then I obviously wanted more and stumbled across you guys. Been reading you – and your recommendations – ever since.

What I love about this place? The recommendations, the humor (I love me some incisive reviews), the ebook reader tutorials, the serious discussions (I think that I’ve read some of the most pertinent conversations about ebooks, traditional publishing & copyright here). Thank you for all of this!

What I’d love to see more of are reviews/discussions of older books. I was very happy about the (relatively) recent posts about Gaffney, Balogh, Heyer in that direction. For me it’s not just about great recommendations of classic romances (that as a newbie I appreciate a lot), but also by the sense of community I get when I read a book and discover there’s a DA review of it.

Before Dear Author and Smart Bitches I had to read the back of the cheerios box in the mornings! For that I thank you.
My favorite is when CONTROVERSY hits and multiple hissy fits happen. Oh the huffing and puffing that ensues. It’s always quite entertaining.

My favorite DA moment? Hmmm – tough to say. Lots of amusement and WTFery to be found here. And something about me (all about me of course) – is some comment I made where Jane was all “are you my sister”? … Obviously this was way back when in like 07 or 08. :P

Happy 6th Birthday DearAuthor! Wow, six years already!!! Congratulations on the growth of the community here :)

There were many posts that I appreciate here but two types that I especially appreciate are the reviews and the midday links. This site is my portal of news in the ebook world and I’m here at least once a day to get my daily dose of knowledge. I also greatly enjoy and appreciate the giveaways and the annual DABWAHA here at DA.

I found DA fairly recently, by way of SBTB and your dual podcasts. I enjoy the blunt reviews, which explain enough so I get a good feel for whether I’d like the book. Industry news helps keep me up to date, and I love the no-nonsense, sometimes snarky attitude of editorial comments. Thanks!

Happy Blog Anniversary to Dear Author. I frequently read and always look forward to the Books/Publishing Industry related news. They keep me aware of the movers and shakers and even smaller events that can still be quite influential in the future. I appreciate all the reviews and regular features on the blog, but also the non-regular and orginal blog posts. I like that you try to have a review a day. It makes for good reading on my lunch break. I think I would like more joint reviews if possible especially if the reviewers have completely different tastes. Some of those reviews have really helped me figure out if I would like a book or not as compared to the one person reviews where I always wonder how my tastes match up with the reviewer.

Happy Birthday, DA! Six years?! That’s quite a milestone and I’m glad I found you just over 4 years ago when I joined the book blogging world. I’m a big fan.
The only thing I’d ask: when you list the weekly top reads or best sellers – if you’ve published a review of any of the books on the list could you add your grade rating in addition to the links to the various booksellers?
Here’s to many more years of great books and reviews.

Happy Anniversary! I appreciate the book reviews (with fond memories of the haiku reviews!) and have spent quite a bit of $$ on books/authors I would otherwise never have tried. But I think the biggest impact on me has been the technical advice–I’d been thinking of getting an e-reader for a while, but it was reading about it here that pushed me to finally get my first one in the fall of 2010. I like how specifically and clearly technical advice is given, and when I have questions, both DA folks and the general community have been incredibly helpful. I talk abut DA so much that one time, my techie husband was fiddling with something in his Kindle Fire and I asked “where did you get that information?” and he laughed and told me he’d printed out something from “Jane at DA”! So….Happy Anniversary and thank you!! I hope this community continues to grow!

Thank you so much for spending your precious time entertaining and educating the rest of us. I love the industry news, the book information, and of course the reviews, which have helped me to build my embarrasingly large TBR library. I also really appreciate your inclusiveness.

    Firstly, Happy Birthday!!

Just like the Easter Bunny searching for its eggs, I would drop by Dear Author to check on the ebooks (and authors) regardless if its reviews, interviews or any other promotions. As time goes by, I could see how this website blossom to one of my “must read” of the day.

Thank you for being part of my daily life and may you continue to shine among the community.

    Happy Anniversary!!

Happy birthday! And congratulations! I appreciate how DA reviews YA books. I also like DA’s e-reader resources. I’m wondering if DA would ever review Amish romances a.k.a. bonnet rippers. I’ve been trying to find a good one and they’ve been disappointing thus far.

Happy birthday!!! Love your blogs. I like that you give honest detailed reviews , even if the book isn’t good. I also like the info on where to find the sales. And I LOVE the humor (like the nipple names). Here’s to many more years.

I love all the news relating to e-books, the publishing world, and reviews. It’s interesting to be up-to-date with all things happening within the industry. I can’t look at reviews on books the same way, and amazon has dimmed a bit in my eyes as well. I also love your Need a Rec section! It’s helped me out when I’ve wandered into reading dry-spots.

    Most importantly, HAPPY BIRTHDAY :)

Happy birthday Dear Author, Jane and Jayne!
Thank you for creating this website. I found DA via Smart Bitches.
What I love most about DA is the wide range of genres reviewed, the analytical articles and the industry news. Not only am I reading way beyond the historicals that I had grown tired of, but I am far more informed about the publishing industry, which helps me make informed decisions about what to buy and when.

Congrats and Happy blogiversary! What I enjoy from DA are the book reviews, ebook advices and deals, and, most especially, midday news (because I wouldn’t know where to read up on them).

I’ve been on a (long) reading slump lately and have been re-reading books by the same authors over and over. So I would love to see more of the “If you like…” posts by similar authors to find new-to-me authors that could help me get out of this horrible slump!

Keep up the great work and cheers to another 6yrs+!

Happy birthday, Dear Author! I learnt about your site from the messageboards at All About Romance and come here regularly to check out reviews on new (and old) books. I love all your detailed reviews and, whatever grade a book gets, the clarity of the reviewers’ points on what worked and did not work for them so that we really know what the book is like. There are so many romance blogs and reviews nowadays – many are just a synopsis of the book and the reviewer saying they liked it or not, which doesn’t always help the general reader much as Amazon does the same.

I especially appreciate all the publishing news and tech-advice, which Dear Author does really well from a romance reader’s viewpoint. I also like the retro series of articles, and Jane’s columns. I know that you all did a compilation of DA reviewers’ top 100 romances (or something similar) a few years ago – I know it’s probably a lot of work, but could we have an update every few years to see if newer romances have made the list? I like such lists as they are ‘the best of the best’ and a fairly reliable guide to romances that are special, and worthwhile reading.

I love everything about it, from the reviews and the industry info, to the lists and the community.

I’d love it if the reviews were tagged by trope (friends-to-lovers) or sub-genre (regency), so that if I’m in the mood for something, I can just click on the tag-cloud and get all the reviews that fit the bill.

Ah, age six. I remember it well. My first tooth fell out. I got a new doggy (a german shepherd named Bullet). And I was so excited for my first real, not-just-for-my-family birthday party that I remember getting sick all over my brand new dress.

But y’all seem to be handling six so much better! Happy Birthday. I always enjoys checking in at DA to see what new-to-me author I should check out. I also love the industry insider news.

I’m a lurker here most days but do comment sometimes, but I love all of the information you provide to both readers and writers about the publishing industry and what is going on in romance. Your news posts not only help writers, but it’s nice for readers to understand some of these issues as well.

What drew me to Dear Author initially was that I love the premise that all of your reviews are written to the author. It’s a unique way of doing it that I love and enjoy reading.

I really enjoy your articles and the discussion/comments about the publishing industry; particularly the growing pains with epublishing . Similar discussions can be found on the web, but mostly by authors, which is not truly a safe zone (so to speak) for readers. I keep coming here because I really feel this site is primarily for readers and that your reviews are very honest. I know when I commit to buying an “A” grade book, it truly deserves the grade.

Feliz Cumpleaños! I read SBTB for a while before I found DA, but once I found it, every other blog seemed amateur in comparison.

Jane got me to read my first Presents (and Susan Napier) and a Sarah F review prompted my first m/m read. I found Cara McKenna/Meg Maguire here and discovered a new favorite author who also happens to basically live down the street from me. Other sites are all paranormal or all Big 6 mistoricals, but you guys give a great variety from indies, to m/m, to Harlequins and to the PNR and mistoricals everyone reviews.

Happy Birthday, DA! I have a special fondness for DA as I did First Page Saturday a few years ago–and while that manuscript didn’t sell–it made me more confident of my manuscript (-!: writing) as the whole first page had been a test to see if it was good or not as the hero was atypical. And I love the reviews, as I have read books I normally wouldn’t have given a second look to and discovered a whole love for category romances. I also love the variety of features, but especially love when you list deals and give a head’s up on romances/trends (like when you did the RWA interviews with editors, etc.)

I’m a late-comer to the DA site; I just discovered it last summer but it has become one of my must-read-everyday blogs. I have been introduced to so many now-auto-buy authors through this site (Courtney Milan, Patricia Briggs, Kim Dare, Sara Mayberry, Aleksandr Voinov, to name a few) that it doesn’t take the special deals posts to make my wallet roll over and whimper. I also enjoy the mid-day news posts, and most of all, I really love the conversations that go on in the comments. Congrats on your 6th anniversary and thanks. Happy Birthday!

I typically only read the publishing news and tips/tutorials with regards to either publishing or ebooks. I read the D, F and DNF reviews for entertainment + educational purposes (are all of them properly tagged? I feel like some are tagged differently from others or people aren’t always tagging them).

Since my TBR pile is shockingly large right now, I don’t read positive reviews just yet because I’m not looking for anything to read. But when I do come here looking for reviews in the future, it would be a lot easier for me to find the books I’m interested in if there was an easy way to see which genre the books were in without finding a book tagged with it and clicking to see all the posts tagged with it.

Hope my comments helped at all. :)

    Dear Author is Six!
    Happy Anniversary, chicks!!!
    News, reviews and interviews affixed,
This is where I get my fix.

Even when time hits the bricks,
    DA listen and fix,
    Whatever the conflicts,
DA resolve with their bag of tricks.

    Let’s wish Dear Author – Happy B-day
May you Angels strive on with a kungfu kick,
The awesome web-place among the romance cliques!

I still remember when I came to Dear Author – it was after I had just been introduced to the wonderful world of romance novels through Julia Quinn’s Bridgertons. I literally googled “if you like Julia Quinn” to try and find recommendations. And here I still am 3 years later. I would love, love, love more “if you like” style posts. I feel like your readership has a wealth of romance knowledge to help expand my favorites!

Happy birthday to all at DA! I still remember when Jane emailed me to say she’d started a blog (I think it wasn’t called Dear Author at first, it was “something-or-other reader”, IIRC). There weren’t all that many reader blogs out there, so I was ecstatic. I absolutely love what you’ve all done with it over the years, and really appreciate the hard work put into it! Here’s to many years more!

I love the variety of Dear Author – you cover so many genres with your book reviews…and then there is everything else :) I also love that you take a look at what is affecting readers both inside and outside of North America :)

All the best for your seventh year!

Congrats on reaching the 6-year mark. That’s kind of epic in the blogoverse. I stumbled over your blog just a few months back, but I’m enjoying my daily updates immensely. I especially like your publishing and publisher news and all this insider information. I wish you at least another great 6 years!

Congrats! I have been reading you almost as long! I love the inclusion of m/m & lgbt books– that was a great addition to the site. Love the different search option. My two request: more romantic suspense reviews & more western romance reviews.

    Happy Happy Birthday!

Well, I love the reviews as they introduce me to authors I don’t know about or might not have tried if I hadn’t read your reviews. Your overviews/comparisons between e-readers was invaluable when I was trying to decide which to buy.

    Keep up the good work!

Congratulations on 6 years! DA has been a great leader for romance bloggers and you’re one of the blogs I look up to because of the grace. I really like how you’ve expanded the site to include movie reviews, first chapters, etc. I can’t wait to see where you take it in the next six years.

I was an infrequent visitor at first, but have been reading DA regularly and participating more in the past year or two. I love the detailed reviews – even if the reviewer’s taste is different from mine, I can get a good idea of how I’d feel about the book – and enjoy many of the letters of opinion and the discussions with other DA readers.

Happy Birthday DA! Personally I love all the industry news y’all post. I’d never know even a quarter of it without your help. Also it’s fun when a publisher drops by and talks about what titles they’re excited about and why. I always end up adding a list-full of new titles to my goodreads from them:)

D’aw, Happy Birthday, DA! I’ve been a lurker and sporadic commenter for years. The tone and variety keep me coming back, and I particularly enjoy the way that DA is not afraid to call a spade a spade / be critical of the industry.

Happy Birthday DA! I check this site multiple times each day. I love discovering new books and new authors to read. Happy Birthday, Dear Author!
My favorites are the technology and industry updates (because they’re not so easily found in general news reading) and reviews. You’ve helped me with buy or get from Library decisions. Also like the “deals” you all are posting these days. Keep it up!!! :-)

Congratulations on your 6th birthday. I credit Dear Author for bringing me back to reading romance and for introducing me to so many wonderful new authors and books. Thanks for that and for a lively and smart discussion about the books, the state of publishing, ebooks etc. I have learned so much about the business from you. Keep up the great work!

Happy birthday! I love that I’ve discovered a lot of authors from this blog. The reviews are very well written, and I always get a clear picture of what I’m going to find in a particular book. I first learned about DA from Ilona Andrews’ blog. And I’ve learned a lot about ebooks, ereaders and publishing ever since. Thanks for starting your lovely blog. :)

I’ve been reading DA since 2006 when I first was introduced to Ebooks. It’s my one stop for industry news especially, but I also love the tech news too. I’ve used the ebook reader comparisons when buying for ebook readers for family and friends.
    Happy birthday, DA.

    Happy Birthday!!!
I don’t know what I’d do without DA! I come for the news, the reviews, the conversations… It is a place, along with SBTB that has made me feel completely comfortable with my voracious genre fiction consumption. I read quickly and tend to be a comfort zone reader, so you have helped me branch out safely and with very few missteps. I love that there is a place that reads what I like in the critical way that is like how I think about things.
So thanks a bajillion, and a VERY happy birthday! I definitely celebrate your existence!

    Apr 09, 2012 @ 09:27:06

DA has been a preferred haven of the Internet to me for a while, though I don’t post much. I can’t even count how many books I’ve bought just from the reviews on this site. The recommends banner graphic was a nice touch that quickly alerts me to new buys, and I love that news is aggregated and discussed here. For my use this site is top notch.

    Apr 09, 2012 @ 09:40:57

I’m a public librarian who relies heavily on genre blogs to keep me uptodate with popular fiction. While the reviews here are always fun and helpful, the BEST thing about this blog are the insights into the publishing industry.

I may sometimes disagree VOCIFEROUSLY with the opinions expressed by the bloggers and the commenters, but I’m always always grateful to read their thoughts and views!

  306. Anne Fescharek
    Apr 09, 2012 @ 09:58:46

I like the best seller lists and the list of Ebook “Specials” that you publish frequently. But most of all I love the information about the popular fiction publishing world that you send me every day. You are entertaining and informative at the same time. I would not miss a day and I don’t have to.

Happy Birthday! DA is information central for me. I love all the how-to posts about digital libraries and the like. And I went from being completely indifferent to industry news to really looking forward to it thanks to the way it’s presented here.

    Apr 09, 2012 @ 10:23:04

I love you guys. Thanks for all you do. As an author, I read your reviews across all genres to help me with my craft. You teach me. And I also appreciate all the industry news. As a reader, I come here for recommendations, and you’ve led me to many a good book.

In terms of suggestions, I’m stuck. You’re pretty great as you are. I read a lot of fantasy and would like more guidance there–but I also understand this is a romance site and, unfortunately, not many fantasies have a strong romantic element.

    Apr 09, 2012 @ 10:56:46

Hi – You are one of my go-to blogs. I so enjoy the diversity that you cover: a wide range of genres, including some outside the romance genre; the scholarly opinion pieces (who says that romance readers are airheads?; the technical help pieces; the information about the reading world/publishing industry … I could go on, and I enjoy it all. I am also amazed at the amount of work which goes in to many of the posts, including the links to sales.

Because I am always looking for new ideas, I loved the series on If you like – and would really like to see some more of these. I can’t think of anything I would like to see less of.

Congratulations on your first 6 years – long may you continue.

    Apr 09, 2012 @ 11:15:21

    Congratulations!

Dear Author, for me, serves not only as an outstanding source for reviews but an awesome place for learning about the craft of writing. I look at my own work differently now and have a much better appreciation for the works of others because of this site.

As a non-fiction writer, I’ve learned more about the pub industry from DA than I have by actually being a part of it. The news, industry-insider information is so valuable and I thank you for sharing it (and your commentary).

May the next 6 years bring you much success and an abundance of A+ reads!

I can’t tell you how many new books and authors I’ve find because of something I read here. I also really like the feature that allows me to easily read and keep up with DA no matter what device or pc that I’m on. Depending on where I am, I read DA on my PC, phone, or nook. Happy Blogoversary!!!

I think I became a serious DA visitor about a year ago. I ran across your blog b/c of a mention on another and now I visit daily. I love the reviews and the topic discussions. I really love Jane’s discounted book posts even though it makes me buy a lot more books :) I especially love the feeling of community here and the respect that bloggers and commenters have for each other. There are actual, adult discussion here and no flame wars! That’s so refreshing. I can lose an hour or more sometimes here b/c not only do I read the posts but all the comments as well. I wouldn’t change a thing about this site and thanks for all the hard work and dedication you all put into it!!!!

I adore this site. You’re one of the few blogs I check a couple times a day. I love the reviews, the conversations and the opinion pieces.

One thing I’d like to see (again) – the TBR iPhone app doesn’t seem to be working anymore. It was a quick way I could catch up to see if DA or SBTB had new content…any idea if it will make a comeback?

WOW 6 years! What is that in bloglandia? Is it is like a hollywood marriage?? ;-) Seriously though, 6 years is quite a feat.

I like that you review all kinds of genres, the Friday film review and for the most part, people are allowed to speak their minds.

Everyone IS entitled to their opinion, even if/when they’re wrong. ;-)

    Happy Birthday!

I’m a follower of the site because I really enjoy the variety of reviews and the way reviews are set up. I can easily skim through and get a rating at the end of the review if in a hurry or if I don’t have a large interest in the book.

There have been many times that the review winds up being an A and then makes me rethink putting it on my list.

    Thanks for the contest!

I have been following Dear Author for about two years now. I love the industry news, as well as the romance reviews. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a post that was unnecessary or a waste of my time. Relatively easy to find reviews for books by title and author – nothing tricky in your tags, etc.

I’ve been reading Dear Author for a few years. I appreciated your reviews of e-book readers when I was deciding which one to buy (I ended up with a Nook). I also base a lot of my book selections on the reviews I read here (even if I don’t agree with them sometimes). :) Thank you for everything you put into this site. It’s one of my favorites!

I love you guys because you give thoughtful, cogent reviews to the types of books I read. I don’t have to justify my enjoyment of romance novels or refute others’ beliefs about my obviously empty life. Plus, you’ve helped me discover some really excellent authors! I hope to be reading DA reviews for many years to come!

Happy Birthday — with wishes for many more!
Love the reviews — both book and film. I have picked up a number of books and films that I probably would not have if not for the reviews here. I have a feeling one of my favorite things going forward is going to be Recommended Reads Saturday — however, I don’t think my bank account is going to be to happy!!!
Keep up the good work .

Ha! I remember DA in 2006. Someone at the AAR boards linked to one of your early reviews, and I moseyed on over here and kept on visiting. These days I mostly come for the industry news and Op-Eds, but I’ve discovered a few books I wouldn’t have read had DA not mentioned or reviewed them. Happy sixth birthday, and many more to come!

Wow, six years! I enjoy the reviews and industry information on the site. I think my favorite part is the “Coming Soon” section – I often use it because I like to buy books as soon as they come out and this helps me keep track of my favourite authors. I’ve been introduced to so many authors through this site that are now auto-buys. Thank you for all of the work you do!

Six years and counting! Way to go! Dear Author has it all, reviews, recommendations, industry news, opinion pieces, controversies, all the myriad sub-genres of romance, and, most of all, community. This site always offers something of interest, whether it be about the books, the authors, the readearship, the industry. It’s great to get so many perspectives and to share and interact on all things romance-book related. Whatever you may have in store, we’ll all be there with you!!! Woo-hoo! Happy birthday!

This is one of the few blogs/book review lists I actually still follow. I love the mix of topics (and the brutally honest reviews). I learn a lot when Jane gives us a legal overview of some topic relating to ebooks. And I’m always surprised and pleased when I see authors I respect posting in the comments “like a regular person”.

    Happy birthday, Dear Author!

Happy birthday! I still remember the first time I discovered this site roughly 4 years ago. I spent hours reading the archives and I was so excited about finding this community of romance novel readers. I’ve visited some other blogs out there, and I pretty much visit only this romance readers blog on a regular basis. I return because the tone, the community, and features of Dear Author fit me to a tee.

Happy Birthday, DA! I am a new reader, and only discovered the blog a month or so ago. Thanks for making life easier for readers!

@wendy: I should probably second that comment in its totality ^^ – I even won twice at a contest here.

You people are responsible for a whole lot of money spent, whether with deals, recommendations or just info from the comments. I especially love your beginner’s guide to all kinds of aspects of ebooks and that you have more than just romance reviews but they still work within the format of the site and my interests ^^. Happy birthday!

The one thing I miss are Jan’s manga reviews, but I guess she just doesn’t have the time any-more.

    Apr 10, 2012 @ 07:41:16

I am more of a recent follower of this site, having just discovered it last summer. I am also quite new to the romance genre as well, so when I stumbled upon DA and was confronted with horribly cheesy covers (I’m still hoping the covers will become more tasteful someday) I thought it definitely wasn’t for me. But I second guessed myself, added it to my google reader, and decided to give it a shot.
It is one of the best decisions I’ve made!
It is because of you all that I have discovered some of my favorite reads. A few of which are: Bad Boys Do by Victoria Dahl, Curio by Cara McKenna, Sheltered by Charlotte Stein, Because of You by Jessica Scott, and If His Kiss Is Wicked by Jo Goodman. And I have a whole rack of other titles on my TBR list.
I also find your post on new developments in the publishing industry tremendously helpful. I’m currently pursuing an MLS degree, and professors often ask us to bring in news articles about library/information studies topics, and there have been quite a few that I’ve pulled directly from here. So a huge thanks for that :)
You all are doing marvelous work here, but one thing I would like to see more of are reviews and recommendations of Ellora’s Cave titles. My experience with Ellora’s Cave publications have been either stellar or terrible. It is the terrific reads though–like Curio and Sheltered–that lead me to believe there are a lot of other hidden gems out there, but I just don’t know where to find them! That’s really my biggest suggestion.

Thank you again for everything and congratulations on the anniversary!

    Happy birthday Dear Authors!
I like the reviews and that there are so many different genres you review(the deals you post are not hurting either although I don’t know if my portmoney likey you all that much ^_~)

    Congratulations again!

I love this site because you are not afraid to tell it like you see it. I sometimes don’t agree with your reviews, but at least you have real opinions and you don’t pussyfoot around. None of this “every book is woooonderful” nonsense that some purported review sites spout.

    Happy birthday!
I’ve been reading and lurking for a few years. I like the tech posts, the publishing news, the comments and the reader advocacy. And the reviews, of course.
About suggestions: I remember you had some favourites list a while ago where each reviewer rated the books they had read out of the list. That was a big help in determining (confirming, really, since I had been reading you for years) whose tastes aligned best with mine. Would the new reviewers be interested in something similar?

  391. Artemis
    Apr 10, 2012 @ 09:57:13

Of course, I started lurking here quite a while ago for the romance reviews and stayed because of everything else that I learned along the way. You have provided me with an abundance of information not only on the publishing and writing industries, but also on the digital revolution when it exploded.

Congratulations on your 6th Birthday! When other blogs have become redundant and stale, Dear Author has stayed fresh. By continuing to bring an edge to our world with newness while sticking to the basis of what we want: great reviews.

    Thank you.

    Wow, Happy Birthday! :)

I think I discovered DA about 2 years in and then went back and read the old posts so now I don’t remember when exactly I became a regular. I know I visited casually for a while before I signed up for the RSS feed.

My favorite post will probably always be the one where Jane threw a book against the wall and broke her ereader (though there are several haiku reviews I’m very partial to purely for their artistic value). I was really impressed with the broken ereader post because Jane was ranting about an HEA ending that wasn’t an HEA. She hated the ending and didn’t hesitate to let everybody know about her negative experience and to warn readers what to expect at the end of the book. I think that’s what I like most about DA – the candidness of the reviewers in the posts and comments. Well, that and the fact that category Romances get taken seriously. ;D

Jane’s reading tastes overlap mine very nicely, and I sometimes feel like I’m fangirling her and being too familiar in my interactions because of it. In a venn diagram, we’d probably have about an 80% overlap with my set on the more traditional, conservative end and hers pulling ahead to the more modern side. I appreciate the other reviewers as well, though, because they expose me to different tastes. I’ve bought some interesting things that I otherwise probably would never have noticed.

In glancing through the comments, I noticed suggestions for reviews in other genres besides Romance. I’m actually all for that as long as they’re reviews by Romance readers for Romance readers. I really appreciate that DA is dedicated to Romance. I always read from a Romance perspective even when I’m not reading genre Romance; I need the same things from other genres that I get from Romance – good endings, strong character focus, etc. – so I approach other genres very gingerly. I’d welcome (some) reviews from other genres if they’re focused on helping Romance readers find books to read. I really appreciated the Hunger Games reviews and comments that talked about the last book being depressing. That’s exactly the kind of information I need.
