heart of steelDid you love “Iron Duke” like the DA Reviewers? (reviews here and here with a bookchat here) Were you anxious for the sequel, “Heart of Steel”, featuring Yasmeen and Archimedes? Were you thinking of driving to New York and banging on the door of Penguin in hopes that they might give you an early copy? If so, this giveaway is for you. And now, from the desk of Ms. Brook’s editor, Cindy Hwang:

Meljean Brook’s THE IRON DUKE was one of my very favorite books of 2011, and not just because I edited it! J I really feel Meljean created something very special with THE IRON DUKE and the whole Iron Seas steampunk universe, and I’ve been itching to return to her world and to her characters, especially the indomitable airship captain, Yasmeen and adventurer, Archimedes Fox. I know that many readers felt the same way and now, the wait is almost over–Meljean’s 2nd novel of the Iron Seas, HEART OF STEEL, will be out in November. To make the wait a bit more bearable, and to celebrate the publication of HEART OF STEEL, I have 6 ARCs of HEART OF STEEL to give away to lucky readers.

Okay, for this contest, you will need to stand on your head, take a video of yourself, and chew gum at the same time.   Just kidding.  I know that Meljean and Cindy are big fans of Batman and Wonder Woman.  To enter our giveaway, name your favorite super hero or heroine!  Contest is open until Friday, 8 pm CST.

Have to say Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Love this thread – reminds me of my favorite Foxtrot comic strip, with the brothers arguing about the best superhero (Batman’s nothing without his little toys. Superman has bulletproof skin – iirc).

  61. Julie M.
    Oct 11, 2011 @ 13:48:49

I have to go with Wolverine too. But I do think The Iron Duke was a pretty super hero!

  70. Sarah M
    Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:04:03

My favorite heroine is Yomiko Readman from a Japanese anime called Read or Die. Her codemane is The Paper. She’s half Japanese and half-English with the power to control paper. She can construct flying planes out of paper or use it as a razor sharp weapon. She is also a GIANT book lover. She’s always surrounded by books and even runs around pulling a suitcase filled with books to read and to use as weapons.

I’ve always wanted her power since the first time I saw the anime. Then I wanted her unending supply of money to buy so many books. You can’t even find furniture in her apartment she has so many.

  71. Evy Valdez
    Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:06:51

    Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:22:08

I’ve not watched the movie yet so I don’t know if they’ve done him justice but I’m going to have to go with Thor. I mean he’s not just a superhero he’s a God. He’s a Warrior, long trained with superior fighting ability with a mystical warhammer to boot- if he can’t beat you on pure strength alone he’s always got his Godblast. How is there any argument here? No one else can beat that. ;)

  83. Lori T

I luv Oracle – who used to be Batgirl, Barbara Gordon in the wheelchair until she disappeared, thanks to the DCU reboot.

And I’d be horribly remiss if I didn’t mention my own superhero, Jo Tanis from my superhero series with Samhain, “Blaze of Glory”!

(why, yes. I am a publicity ho.)

  100. Jen G.
    Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:07:07

I’m going to ditto all those who say Buffy. I was never a comic book reader, or a fan of superhero movies, but Buffy won me (and a lot of other non-comic fans) over.

  101. Anne
    Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:08:13

This is an awesome contest! I have all the Iron seas stories and cannot wait for Heart of Steel.
My favorite hero was Aquaman he could breathe underwater AND talk to fish how cool was that!My son seems to be following in my footsteps because his favorite hero is Aqua Dude I mean AquaLad. Of course if you want a heroine it would have been Black Canary- I so wanted those boots!

  109. Sandra
    Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:22:07

I’m gonna have to jump on the Buffy bandwagon here, I think. I loved loved loved that show when I was younger. I have such girl-crushes on ladies that can kick butt! Buffy, Ripley from Aliens, Linda Hamilton from Terminator 2, Trinity from The Matrix…

As for a hero of the male variety, I think I have to go with Batman as well. I realize all that lovely money gives him an edge, but there are plenty of rich people out there who don’t choose to do good or put themselves on the line on a daily basis. I like that he doesn’t have the reassurance of superpowers to back him up. Just his determination to help others! That makes him a true hero.

Catwoman is my favorite from way back. Yes, she’s a villain in a lot of versions, but she’s dark and twisted and powerful, plus she’s part cat.

When I was a six, I used to twirl around in circles in the backyard pretending to be Wonder Woman! My pink jump rope was the lasso of truth. I made cuff bracelets with empty toilet paper rolls. A headband tiara.

Wow! That is a tough one as there are soooo many! In no particular order:
Buffy, Wolverine, Batman, Gambit, Nightcrawler, Raven (from Teen Titans), Kitty Pride and literary wise I love the superheroes from Kelly Meding’s new book Trance and the girls from Kittredge and Kessler’s Black and White and Shades of Gray.I loved The Iron Duke and have devoured the two short stories and am dying for Heart of Steel! :)

Loved The Iron Duke. It feels as if it’s been years and years we’ve been waiting for Heart of Steel.

I’m going with Wolverine, because I’m shallow. Hugh Jackman… need I say more?

    Favorite Superhero. You.Are.Killing.Me.

How to choose?!?! This is so cruel! Okay I’m going to just say one. Because if I start naming superheroes. I will be here forever and the names and stories will be numerous.

So I’m going to go with Psylocke from X-Men/Excalibur.

I also really love Blink. (Okay so I named two.So sue me)

    Oct 11, 2011 @ 16:10:02

@Rosie: YES! It was such an awesome cartoon. I won’t embarass myself (more than usual) by showing how much I liked the show. But in case you want to, the show repeats on a station called The Hub.

Sailor Moon. I was so happy to find this show when I was a kid. Female characters as the leads?! It was heaven…and more than a little ridiculous at times.

    Oct 11, 2011 @ 17:00:30

Spider Man, since I was little. I still have all my old Spider Man cards and comic books too. =)
Then I would have to go with Gambit from X-Men but I also like Megan B.’s answer, Christian Bale, lol. He makes a yummy super hero!

  139. Kelley B

    Oct 11, 2011 @ 17:31:44

Courage the Cowardly Dog. He’s afraid of everything (so am I), he would prefer to run away (check), but he manages somehow to be brave when it matters (my ongoing goal in life). Thanks for the opportunity and another (yes, it will be) fabulous book.

    Oct 11, 2011 @ 17:52:20

It’s hard to pick a favorite comic book hero, but since the impending release of Heart of Steel has me in a Steampunk frame of mind, I’m going to say, Agatha from Girl Genius. When it comes to heroines, there’s nothing better than a girl who wears glasses and knows how to kick asses.

And I’m not just saying that because I wear glasses.
    Ok, maybe a little.

  148. Ducky
    Oct 11, 2011 @ 17:56:20

    Gotta go with Buffy.

She looked like the type of girl who always gets it first in a horror movie and instead she kicks the monster’s ass. I still remember how refreshing I found her when BTVS started.

Plus, she had to work a really menial job at one point to pay bills – I can identify with her much more than those billionaire superheroes ala Batman and Ironman, etc.

  149. Donna

Ok, I don’t know if this would be classified as a super hero, but I always liked Rocky and Bullwinkle. they were always saving the world from the evil duo of Natasha and Boris. They (Rocky & Bullwinkle) didn’t have any super powers. But they saved the day each time.

My favorite comic book characters are Rachel (Phoenix) Summers and Illyana Rasputin (Magik) during the 1980s. Both characters come from very fucked up backgrounds and do their very best to work on themselves to be better people/heroes.

For me,”Days of Future Past” and “Days of Future Present” are very bittersweet. I stopped reading comic books around the mid 1990s, but it did seem sad that Rachel Summers and Franklin Richards never got back together. Maybe something has changed since then and someone can tell me.

Favorite super hero, I’ve always had a big old soft spot for Gambit from Marvels X-men. That Cajun accent gets me every time.

Batman for the win, but the ultimate costumed character is Catwoman!

    Oct 12, 2011 @ 07:56:09

Please pick me. I haven’t started the series yet but I have it in mount TBR. This would convince me to put it at the top of the pile. Plus, Meljean Brooks is so nice in person, it makes me want to read her books even more. Plus, I love to talk about books with everyone. If I win, I will tell people all about it and post reviews online. I am feeling a little beggy at the moment. Thanks for the giveaway. Favorite superhero: Well, I love them all but the first one to pop in my head was Wolverine. But I love the Hugh Jackman version slightly better than the comics version.

The Dark Knight of course! Batman is just about the coolest thing ever…

    Oct 12, 2011 @ 08:50:26

*SQUEE* Ahem. Anywho…favorite super hero or heroine? I would have to say Buffy, even though she wasn’t originally part of the comic culture. Either her or Veronica Mars.

  238. Sara
    Oct 12, 2011 @ 09:08:52

With the Avengers movie around the corner and how excited about it, I’d have to say one of the Avengers is my favorite at the moment. So, it would be Ironman.

I love how snarky he is. I also like the juxtaposition between his power as iron man and his weakness outside the armor. This is carried on into his personality as well with his self-confident conceit and charm coupled with how much he actually dislikes himself.

  239. Rachel
    Oct 12, 2011 @ 09:15:36

I love most of the X-Men, but my favorite was always Rachel, the telekentic mutant who was Scott and Jean’s daughter from an alternate future… (She had my name! And my red hair! And my mental powers! Er, okay, maybe not that last one…)

    Oct 12, 2011 @ 10:33:32

I liked Brenda Starr, intrepid reporter and Robin, the Boy Wonder until I grew up and fell for Superman. The frustrating stand-offish big city hero. lol No wonder I had issues. ;-)

Great question! TY for the giveaway! :)

    Oct 12, 2011 @ 11:17:25

I love Superman, especially as portrayed by Dean Cain in the TV show Lois and Clark: The Adventures of Superman. That man is simply delicious.

And I’m soooo excited for the new Iron Seas book. Meljean is brilliant. I’m still trying to figure out how Archimedes is even alive. Didn’t Yasmeen throw him into a zombie-infested forest after he tried to take over her airship?

So many super heroes to choose from. I have always loved Gambit and Wolverine for my comic book heroes. For TV, I would have to say Buffy. Movie hero would be Eli form the “Book of Eli”. Anime heroes, hmm it would have to be Spike from Cowboy Bebop and the boys from Gundam Wing. Finally from the world of games, Squall from FFVIII. What can I say, geek to my core.

  258. P. Kirby

    Oct 12, 2011 @ 19:21:54

Hey, thanks for running this awesome contest! Hands down, pants up, my ultimate favorit super hero is Superman. Christopher Reeve made me a true fan with all of his movies and I loved to watch Smallville. I liked the whole concept of how he came from another planet and he was raised by good folks who made him fight for truth, justice and most of all, always trying to find the good in people. All of that while trying to keep his x-ray vision in check and pretending that he could still get hurt of course ;-)

    Oct 12, 2011 @ 21:08:18

THOR!!! Definitely THOR!!!!. Can I count the Doctor as a super hero (Dr. Who)? He has a mighty sonic screwdriver!!!!

and I would say that I would cut off my left arm for one of those ARCs but Meljean might actually make me do that (I have an embroidery machine that I could replace it with and maybe that would give me more time to sew….)

  288. Gemma M
    Oct 13, 2011 @ 03:29:52

Rogue in any variation from the Xmen. Strong yet vulnerable, totally kickass and despite not being able to touch she still has Gambit following her around. So adorable – I’m ignoring how badly they messed that up in the films.

Can I go with a superhero team? Because I just saw The Avengers’ trailer and now I can’t wait for that movie and those characters, most of whom I loved in the recent movies, with the exception of the Hulk, who I just don’t care for. With Joss Whedon of the Buffyverse at the helm, I’m expecting great things.

    Oct 13, 2011 @ 03:54:14

I hope it’s okay to mention Marvel superhero’s instead of DC comic hero’s. I like DC but I grew up on Marvel. Spiderman was my hero growing up. And he was a big influence in my life as well. My father actually taught me to read using his old Spiderman comic books. My mom would laugh when I swore I was going to marry Peter Parker when I grew up.

Can’t wait for this book to come out! Favorite superhero is Gambit (mad crush on that charming Cajun and I’ve always had a soft spot for thieves – I know, there must be a 12 step program). Favorite heroine would HAVE to be Storm. I’ve wanted to be her since I was 10 (and I’m 42 so that’s saying something!)

It’s so hard to pick just 1! I am going to say Emma Frost (pre-January Jones). I’ve always loved her (and her relationship with Cyclops).

If it helps my odds, I will video myself standing on my head and chewing gum ^_^
