Did you love “Iron Duke” like the DA Reviewers? (reviews here and here with a bookchat here) Were you anxious for the sequel, “Heart of Steel”, featuring Yasmeen and Archimedes? Were you thinking of driving to New York and banging on the door of Penguin in hopes that they might give you an early copy? If so, this giveaway is for you. And now, from the desk of Ms. Brook’s editor, Cindy Hwang:
Meljean Brook’s THE IRON DUKE was one of my very favorite books of 2011, and not just because I edited it! J I really feel Meljean created something very special with THE IRON DUKE and the whole Iron Seas steampunk universe, and I’ve been itching to return to her world and to her characters, especially the indomitable airship captain, Yasmeen and adventurer, Archimedes Fox. I know that many readers felt the same way and now, the wait is almost over–Meljean’s 2nd novel of the Iron Seas, HEART OF STEEL, will be out in November. To make the wait a bit more bearable, and to celebrate the publication of HEART OF STEEL, I have 6 ARCs of HEART OF STEEL to give away to lucky readers.
Okay, for this contest, you will need to stand on your head, take a video of yourself, and chew gum at the same time. Just kidding. I know that Meljean and Cindy are big fans of Batman and Wonder Woman. To enter our giveaway, name your favorite super hero or heroine! Contest is open until Friday, 8 pm CST.

If Buffy counts, she wins hands-down! Otherwise…okay, this is embarrassing, but I do have a guilty love for Elektra based purely on the (bad, I know, but somehow totally endearing to me) Jennifer Garner movie. Going to hide now…
Oct 11, 2011 @ 12:59:56
Ooh Wonder Woman totally. Lasso of Truth, those bad-ass bullet blocking bracelets, and the tiara to keep all that gorgeous hair out of her eyes :-). Am now having wicked flashbacks to late 70s and springing around house in my WW underoos.

Er … don’t enter me in the giveaway, please. This is just a dork-plosion in the comments.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 13:04:35
Captain Hammer in Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible. Who wouldn’t love Nathan Fillion?

I can’t wait to read Heart of Steel. Thanks for the fantabulous giveaway!!!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 13:29:03
Optimus Prime! He is one sexy robot.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 13:29:33
Oh, I must be old, because I still love Bat Girl (Commissioner Gorden’s daughter). This was in the 60′s when a woman superhero gave us young girls the belief that maybe someday we could be superheros just like the boys get to be.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 13:30:35
Definitely Iron Man, so hard and yet so vulnerable :)
I’l be getting this book regardless, I loved the previous one :)

My favorite is Wolverine.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 13:47:10
Have to say Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Love this thread – reminds me of my favorite Foxtrot comic strip, with the brothers arguing about the best superhero (Batman’s nothing without his little toys. Superman has bulletproof skin – iirc).
Oct 11, 2011 @ 13:48:49
I have to go with Wolverine too. But I do think The Iron Duke was a pretty super hero!
Oh yeah and also Pearls before Swine’s – The Fantastic Four, of course there are only three of them, “Because math is not a part of their fantasticalness”
Oct 11, 2011 @ 13:52:29
Wonder Woman with the lasso.

Awesome giveaway, btw!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 13:59:47
If she counts, Buffy.
If she doesn’t, Batman. My parents bought me the Michael Keaton Batman VHS (back when they weren’t cheap) because I loved it so much.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:00:20
My favorite would have to be Batman!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:03:42
My favorite superheroe, hands down, is Batman!!!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:04:03
My favorite heroine is Yomiko Readman from a Japanese anime called Read or Die. Her codemane is The Paper. She’s half Japanese and half-English with the power to control paper. She can construct flying planes out of paper or use it as a razor sharp weapon. She is also a GIANT book lover. She’s always surrounded by books and even runs around pulling a suitcase filled with books to read and to use as weapons.
I’ve always wanted her power since the first time I saw the anime. Then I wanted her unending supply of money to buy so many books. You can’t even find furniture in her apartment she has so many.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:06:51
ummm i have to say Cutter and Leetah in the comics “ElfQuest” by Wendy and Richard Pini! i loved them so much growing up i babysat hours on end just to buy those comics in book form! and i shared them with all my friends! i hope i win i loved the iron duke and i know i will enjoy heart of steel!

Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:07:52
Here are two surprise answers: Pippi Longstocking and Scout (from To Kill a Mockingbird). Sometimes, super heroes come in small packages. :)
Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:09:53
I have been eagerly awaiting the sequel to Iron Duke since about 6 seconds after I finished it.
My favorite superhero is Captain Hammer. The universe exists for Nathan Fillion to stand on while being awesome.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:10:09
Hi!
My fav will be cat woman, I really love this character: introduced by my parents when I was young because they used to watch Batman (old one). Thanks for this giveaway! :)
proserpinecravedfor(at)hotmail(dot)com
Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:10:22
I always liked the New Mutants (X-Men spinoff.) My three favorite were Dani (psychic powers), Ilyana (raised by demons in a hell dimension, teleporting circles,) and Rahne (conflicted Scottish werewolf.) Not as well known, but I ate those comics up with a spoon in the nineties. :)
Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:10:39
Namor, the Sub-Mariner, is my #1 superhero love.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:17:34
I would want to be Storm from the X-Men (wouldn’t mind looking like Halle Berry either). Nothing could be better than flying on the winds and throwin’ around lightening bolts!
Really loved the Iron Duke and looking forward to Heart of Steel.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:17:57
Electrawoman and her side kick, Dynagirl.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:20:49
@Sarah M: This sounds like it’s made of win and AWESOME! That’s why I love Dear Author – I learn about something new and covet-worthy every time I visit. Off to go look for this on Amazon….

Batman! I like’em tall, dark and broody.
Oh me me me pick me pick me I want to read this book SOOO MUCH! *crosses fingers*
Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:22:08
I’ve not watched the movie yet so I don’t know if they’ve done him justice but I’m going to have to go with Thor. I mean he’s not just a superhero he’s a God. He’s a Warrior, long trained with superior fighting ability with a mystical warhammer to boot- if he can’t beat you on pure strength alone he’s always got his Godblast. How is there any argument here? No one else can beat that. ;)
Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:22:33
I like Superman….geeky to dreamy.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:23:12

Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:36:01
I luv Oracle – who used to be Batgirl, Barbara Gordon in the wheelchair until she disappeared, thanks to the DCU reboot.
And I’d be horribly remiss if I didn’t mention my own superhero, Jo Tanis from my superhero series with Samhain, “Blaze of Glory”!
(why, yes. I am a publicity ho.)
XD
Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:38:20
Batman!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:39:31

Totally the Tick. He’s nigh invulnerable!
Can’t wait for Iron Seas. :)
Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:57:59
I have always been a Batman fan!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:59:02
My favorite superhero is probably Batman. Something about him just clicked with me when I was younger, and I’ve admired him ever since.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 14:59:20
I used to be obsessed with all things Buffy the Vampire Slayer when I was younger.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:02:41

Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:03:59
I loved Iron Man and Robert Downey Jr just made him all the more yummy!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:05:13
I would like to pick something original, something not said yet but….I got nothing! So Thor or Superman.
bluesun1218@dishmail.net
Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:05:52
My favorite superheroine during my teen years was definitely the Sensational She-Hulk (as imagined by John Byrne).
For superhero(es), I would currently have to say Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:07:07
I’m going to ditto all those who say Buffy. I was never a comic book reader, or a fan of superhero movies, but Buffy won me (and a lot of other non-comic fans) over.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:08:13
This is an awesome contest! I have all the Iron seas stories and cannot wait for Heart of Steel.
My favorite hero was Aquaman he could breathe underwater AND talk to fish how cool was that!My son seems to be following in my footsteps because his favorite hero is Aqua Dude I mean AquaLad. Of course if you want a heroine it would have been Black Canary- I so wanted those boots!

Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:19:48
Look! Up in the sky! Is it a bird? Is it a frog? NO it’s my favourite superhero – Underdog.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:22:07
I’m gonna have to jump on the Buffy bandwagon here, I think. I loved loved loved that show when I was younger. I have such girl-crushes on ladies that can kick butt! Buffy, Ripley from Aliens, Linda Hamilton from Terminator 2, Trinity from The Matrix…
As for a hero of the male variety, I think I have to go with Batman as well. I realize all that lovely money gives him an edge, but there are plenty of rich people out there who don’t choose to do good or put themselves on the line on a daily basis. I like that he doesn’t have the reassurance of superpowers to back him up. Just his determination to help others! That makes him a true hero.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:24:09
The Silver Surfer…
Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:29:09
I’m looking forward to this book like Christmas and birthday rolled into one big gimme gimme now.
Favorite fictional hero – Adam West’s Batman

Ooh, yeah, so excited for this book. Let’s say Henry Cavill as superman!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:33:43
Catwoman is my favorite from way back. Yes, she’s a villain in a lot of versions, but she’s dark and twisted and powerful, plus she’s part cat.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:35:33
Batman! He doesn’t have superpowers, just technology and superb conditioning.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:35:34
When I was a six, I used to twirl around in circles in the backyard pretending to be Wonder Woman! My pink jump rope was the lasso of truth. I made cuff bracelets with empty toilet paper rolls. A headband tiara.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:35:42
Wow! That is a tough one as there are soooo many! In no particular order:
Buffy, Wolverine, Batman, Gambit, Nightcrawler, Raven (from Teen Titans), Kitty Pride and literary wise I love the superheroes from Kelly Meding’s new book Trance and the girls from Kittredge and Kessler’s Black and White and Shades of Gray.I loved The Iron Duke and have devoured the two short stories and am dying for Heart of Steel! :)
Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:36:01
Have to go with the innovative iron man as well!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:37:11
I have to go with Wolverine, and because I am a Librarian of course for the female version my favourite superheroine is Batgirl.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:39:18
Wonder Twins!!!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:39:57
I have always like Superman!!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:39:59
Batman!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:45:49
Do you remember Inspector Gadget? Not quite a superhero, I guess, but fun. I’m going with Iron Man and Jean Grey.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:51:07
Wont to try! ‘Cause “Iron Seas” was my first acquaintance with steampunk and I love it very much!
About the super hero – it is definitely Hulk! My sweet green fascinator ;)
Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:51:16
I like Batman Beyond – Bruce’s protegee in the future. Remember the cartoon? It was so awesome.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:52:23
My favorite super hero is Superman! :-)
Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:53:43
I have always been partial to the X-Men, in particular Rogue, Wolverine and Gambit. :)
Thanks for the opportunity!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 15:56:09

She-Ra, Princess of Power!
By the power of Grayskull… (she-ra, she-ra…)
Oct 11, 2011 @ 16:02:50
Loved The Iron Duke. It feels as if it’s been years and years we’ve been waiting for Heart of Steel.
I’m going with Wolverine, because I’m shallow. Hugh Jackman… need I say more?
Oct 11, 2011 @ 16:04:29
Love Batman–something about the enforced isolation always gets me. And also Jean Grey. Psychic powers are my fave. :)
Oct 11, 2011 @ 16:04:31
Favorite Superhero. You.Are.Killing.Me.
How to choose?!?! This is so cruel! Okay I’m going to just say one. Because if I start naming superheroes. I will be here forever and the names and stories will be numerous.
So I’m going to go with Psylocke from X-Men/Excalibur.
I also really love Blink. (Okay so I named two.So sue me)
Oct 11, 2011 @ 16:05:26
Wonder Woman! “All the world is waiting for you…!” I used to dress up like her, complete with a yellow rope -aka golden lasso of truth- for ensnaring my victims.(I was seven, honest!)
Oct 11, 2011 @ 16:10:02
@Rosie: YES! It was such an awesome cartoon. I won’t embarass myself (more than usual) by showing how much I liked the show. But in case you want to, the show repeats on a station called The Hub.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 16:16:14
I’ve always been a Wonder Woman fan, but I really like Storm too.
I’m really looking forward to reading HEART OF STEEL!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 16:20:57
I’m going to have to say Batman. Or Tommy Monaghan, better known as Hitman. Who may be more of a bad guy, really, but he’s awesome.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 16:22:03
I am so old school. Superman for sure. I have always loved his dual identity.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 16:22:18
Sailor Moon. I was so happy to find this show when I was a kid. Female characters as the leads?! It was heaven…and more than a little ridiculous at times.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 17:00:30
Spider Man, since I was little. I still have all my old Spider Man cards and comic books too. =)
Then I would have to go with Gambit from X-Men but I also like Megan B.’s answer, Christian Bale, lol. He makes a yummy super hero!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 17:10:48
I’ll put in a vote for Batman. . . at least the Christian Bale/Christopher Nolan version.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 17:25:23
Charles Xavier.. when he’s played by James McAvoy! Yowza.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 17:29:02
My fave has to be BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER.
She’s the best kind of superhero — one with a smartass sense of humor.

Courage the Cowardly Dog. He’s afraid of everything (so am I), he would prefer to run away (check), but he manages somehow to be brave when it matters (my ongoing goal in life). Thanks for the opportunity and another (yes, it will be) fabulous book.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 17:37:37
Thor. Cause he’s HOT.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 17:38:58
What about Xena the Warrior Princess? Loved her in that kitchy TV show.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 17:40:11
Wolverine all the way!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 17:45:14
Not sure if he could be classified as a super hero but one of my favorite characters is Eric from True Blood.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 17:52:20
It’s hard to pick a favorite comic book hero, but since the impending release of Heart of Steel has me in a Steampunk frame of mind, I’m going to say, Agatha from Girl Genius. When it comes to heroines, there’s nothing better than a girl who wears glasses and knows how to kick asses.
And I’m not just saying that because I wear glasses.
Really.
Ok, maybe a little.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 17:56:20
Gotta go with Buffy.
She looked like the type of girl who always gets it first in a horror movie and instead she kicks the monster’s ass. I still remember how refreshing I found her when BTVS started.
Plus, she had to work a really menial job at one point to pay bills – I can identify with her much more than those billionaire superheroes ala Batman and Ironman, etc.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 17:57:26
Thor! Also, Liam Neeson in the movie taken. He was very superheroish. Love him in that!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 18:05:15
It’s a tossup between Gambit and Wolverine!!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 18:05:42
I loved Iron Duke and am really looking forward to Heart of Steel.
I’d have to say Wonder Woman. I would love to have that lasso of truth.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 18:10:41
Emma Peel from The Avengers & Buffy is a close second.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 18:18:51
Rogue, hands down. tragic super power that never lets you kiss your creole snarky lover boy? *swoon* It sets my romangst senses tingling.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 18:22:40
I want to be Wonder Woman and date Batman!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 18:25:55
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my favourite super hero. She can slay things and still look pretty good.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 18:28:53
I loved Wonder Woman when I was young…. I wanted to be just like her!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 18:31:24
I always liked Poison Ivy :)
Oct 11, 2011 @ 18:34:41
My favorite superhero would have to be Sailor Moon.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 18:50:46
Buffy rules!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 18:55:24
Love “The Iron Duke”? Yes !
Drive to NYC to beg for book? Yes !!
Kick some Wonder Woman *ss? Yes !!!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 19:03:58
I cannot wait for Heart of Steel!! My favorite superhero would be Batman…. not the ’60′s one, the Christian Bale/Michael Keaton ones (surprisingly, not George Clooney… love him, but that was just wrong!).
Oct 11, 2011 @ 19:05:46
I would say Thor, but Robert Downey Jr. is just too wonderful for words, so Iron Man.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 19:16:59
I see we have a few votes for those wonderful canine superheroes!
I have to go with Bolt, the Disney superhero dog!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 19:17:49
Jessica Jones. Badass, sarcastic-as-hell, foul-mouthed, private eye and retired C-list superhero turned Avenger. I love her like mad.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 19:20:19
Ok, I don’t know if this would be classified as a super hero, but I always liked Rocky and Bullwinkle. they were always saving the world from the evil duo of Natasha and Boris. They (Rocky & Bullwinkle) didn’t have any super powers. But they saved the day each time.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 19:21:32
Booster Gold. Hands down. Ted and him are pretty much my favorite crime fighting duo ever. RIP Ted Kord.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 19:22:27
Hellboy! Thanks for hosting the giveaway!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 19:23:40
My favorite comic book characters are Rachel (Phoenix) Summers and Illyana Rasputin (Magik) during the 1980s. Both characters come from very fucked up backgrounds and do their very best to work on themselves to be better people/heroes.
For me,”Days of Future Past” and “Days of Future Present” are very bittersweet. I stopped reading comic books around the mid 1990s, but it did seem sad that Rachel Summers and Franklin Richards never got back together. Maybe something has changed since then and someone can tell me.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 19:29:48
I liked Flash and would love the next book. Thanks for making these available.
PS I love Meljean in her Wonder Woman outfit. I am surprised that picture was not available for this give-away.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 19:30:11
Oh the things I would do for a copy of this ARC. Tap dancing may be involved…
Favorite super hero, I’ve always had a big old soft spot for Gambit from Marvels X-men. That Cajun accent gets me every time.
Favorite heroine is Buffy. Who else could it be for this vampire loving child of the 90′s ?
Oct 11, 2011 @ 19:30:40
I have to be unoriginal and go with Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 19:33:30
Batgirl
Although I had to think about the Hugh Jackman Wolverine character
Oct 11, 2011 @ 19:40:29
My favorite has to be Spiderman. I can’t resist the idea of a geek becoming a superhero.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 19:49:11
I don’t really like/know superheroes but if there was one person that I would want to save me, it would be Olivia Dunham from Fringe :)
Oct 11, 2011 @ 19:51:41
Another vote for Buffy here. If she doesn’t count, then I’m going with Spiderman. I always thought the webs shooting out of his hands were way cool.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 19:58:33
I’m going to have to go with The Tick.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 20:01:39
Batman has always been a fave… No super powers, just money & gadgets & the batcave & Alfred & a driving need to protect. Yup.
Really looking forward to Heart of Steel. Iron Duke was a fabulous read!!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 20:09:16
I have loved Batman since whenever the Animated Series started. I was 8 or 9, maybe? Definitely my first cartoon crush. The second was Gambit.
A Heart of Steel ARC would rock me like a hurricane.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 20:11:08
I love Rogue from the Xmen she my favorite female character and Gambit was my favorite male one.

Oct 11, 2011 @ 20:25:24
I’ve got to say, I’m pretty impressed with Thor and The Green Lantern lately! :)
Oct 11, 2011 @ 20:26:32
My faves are still Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat) and Piotr Nikolaievitch Rasputin (Colossus) from the X-Men.
Thanks for the giveaway!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 20:33:49
Is this open to international readers? The rules don’t say!
I’m an Iron Man girl too, especially since Robert Downey Jr. took over the role. Although Wolverine tugs at my heart as well :)
Thanks for the chance.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 20:37:01
Rogue. I loved her in the X-Men cartoons.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 20:37:41
@Hillary I’m pretty sure it is.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 20:45:24
Another Buffy fan! But if I had to go with a male superhero–Batman (the dark version–because I like my Batman the way I like my chocolate :) )
Oct 11, 2011 @ 20:50:47
Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman was my idol! Never missed a show, I never read the comics though..
Thank you for the contest!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 20:51:05
It goes against everything, but I still love Wonder Woman.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 20:51:54
There’s too many to choose from, but I’m going to go with Spider-Man, the original angsty young superhero. I just love the idea that he’s got to worry about super villains and how to pay his rent, all at the same time.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 20:59:59
I’m gonna go Electra. Like Bad women that kick a**. lol
Oct 11, 2011 @ 21:04:54
Hmm, tough tough – I think I’ll go with Spiderman since I just finished re-reading some of his comics.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 21:12:01
Not a big superhero girl so I’ll go with Spiderman.
I also like Christian Bale’s Batman.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 21:16:12
Gotta go with a classic: Superman.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 21:18:48
I’m going to go for Buffy as well. I was addicted to that show.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 21:20:09
I love any number of superheroes, but Thor is my latest fave thanks to the utter deliciousness of Chris Hemsworth!!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 21:20:35
when I was a kid and read comics, it was the Phantom, but now it is Buffy
Oct 11, 2011 @ 21:30:59
Rogue from the X-Men has always been my favourite. I adore her forbiden love for Gambit.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 21:36:08
I’m going to go with V, from “V for Vendetta.”
Been looking forward to this addition to the steampunk series for quite some time.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 21:37:33
Thundarr the Barbarian. Never got over him.
Oct 11, 2011 @ 21:38:04
It has to be Batman!!!
Oct 11, 2011 @ 21:44:53
Rogue! 90s Xmen cartoon/comic Rogue, not the modern adaptation. She was a good balance of strong, sassy, and tragic.
