The Year in Advance, 2007 at DearAuthor.Com

New Years 2007Why do a year in review? That’s what the archives are for. Instead, let’s move forward and see how we can improve for the new year. 2007(!). Last year I came across a short “summary” by Lori Foster of her experiences with different editors. I thought the information was interesting and that maybe other readers would be interested. I also thought that if I could con some of these editors into participating, maybe they would give us the heads up on some new authors coming out in 2007. The publicity desks and editors of the various houses were surprisingly receptive. We asked everyone we could find emails for and nearly everyone agreed to participate.

Lunch with an Editor
Every Monday for the next 6 or 7 weeks, we are going to have lunch with an editor. We’ll start the year off with Cindy Hwang, executive editor for Berkley of such notables as Emma Holly, Lori Foster, Christine Feehan, and Nalini Singh. We also have an interview forthcoming from head beancounter extraordinaire, Sue Grimshaw, buyer of romance books for BGI (corporate umbrella of Borders and Waldenbooks).

Dear Author Book Club
January 1, 2007, will also feature the inaugural DearAuthor book club selection. This book club will take place of the Ebook Contest we ran last year and will work essentially the same way. For two weeks, we’ll take nominations. Anyone can enter: readers or authors. After the two week nomination period is over, we’ll tally up the nominations and pick six of the books that look the most interesting to us and then the readers and authors can vote for two weeks. The winning book will be read and reviewed by the two Ja(y)nes and stay up on the sidebar for the month. The entire month the page will be readily available for readers to comment. Our hope is to generate some really exciting in depth discussions of what we like and didn’t like about books, themes, motifs, character behavior and so forth. We are only go to do six books this year, but if it is a successful and fun endeavor, next year, we’ll expand it.

New Author Spotlight
On the third Friday of the month, we are going to do a new author spotlight. We are asking any new, first time author, to email us about their book and we’ll display a copy of the book cover, a link to an excerpt, and a short blurb about the book. It’s our effort to help readers find new authors to read and a way for us to contribute in some way back to the romance community.

Sortable Database of Reviews
Also in 2007, we hope to have a sortable database of reviews. This may be late 2007 depending on how time intensive this is and whether I can convince my brother, a sql database administrator, into helping me.

Want Suggestions for Improvement
If you have any other suggestions or comments or feedback, please let us know by emailing us at jane @ dearauthor.com or by using the contact form. Thanks for spending the year with us. We wouldn’t be enjoying ourselves without all the readers that visit. Here’s hoping that 2007 is a great year for everyone.

Sounds like you have some great ideas coming. And FYI – I wanted to link a review you did of a book and I found it very easily. So even if you’re planning on reviewing your database, it is easy to find your reviews.
