USA Today Bestseller List, Week Ending November 11, 2007

J.D. Robb’s Creation in Death is the top selling romance. Even though the publishers market this book as a mystery (all the publicity material I received highlighted cover quotes from male authors) and is shelved in the mystery section, Robb herself claims this as a romance. Therefore so do I.

CL Wilson’s, Lady of Light and Shadows, dropped out of her list but the book generated enough interest that her first book, Lord of the Fading Lands, crept back into the bookscan romance top 100 list.

Most importantly, though, is the appearance of Brenda Jackson’s Slow Burn on the extended list. This is the first time for Jackson. I can’t help but wonder where she is shelved and if she is not solely shelved in the AA section of the bookstore, it makes a strong argument for complete integration.

I’m fairly confident that I saw Slow Burn on the new release table in Borders.

Jane, I’ve been following your USA Bestseller List posts, and one thing that has always puzzled me is how/why you have certain books on the list, and others out of the list. I can’t make sense of the allocation.

Fer instance, Suzanne Brockman’s All Through the Night is shown as out of the list at No. 66, yet Tami Hoag’s Taken By Storm is shown on the first part (on list?) and it’s No. 81 (debut 63).

Well, I try to always include romance books. I don’t always know when a book (like Hoag’s book or Steele’s book) is considered a romance book. Sometimes I include books that just interest me like – the Harry Potter phenomenon. I think that the RWA has a table for best selling romance books so they might be a better reference.

    Should I be more inclusive?

okay, I think I see where my confusion is comig in. I thought the USA bestseller list was one single list that included all genres. It seems like the bigger list of books at the begining of your post are the Romance books, and the ‘out of list’ books are books you consider are/could be Romance but are ranked on another list. I think. lol. No bigger, just had me pondering. I think you’re pretty damn inclusive as it is. No need to do more work :)
