USA Today Bestseller List, Week Ending May 6, 2007

USA LOGO

I’m not going to talk about the number one position until Rhonda Byrne’s , The Secret, falls off the list. George Tenet debuts at No. 3, At the Center of the Storm: My Years at the CIA, his tell all of Bush’s bright decision to invade Iraq. HarperCollins will be pleased given their 20% decline in profits for the first 9 quarters of fiscal 2007.

There are some established authors gaining greater notice such as Lynn Viehl with her debut at No. 48. She was No. 9 on the Bookscan list for romances. Viehl received a huge marketing push from Borders which may account for her high placement – that and her ability to tell a good story.

According to the USA database, there were two* long time authors who made their first appearance on the list: Lara Adrian (paranormal) and Jennifer Ashley(paranormal). Congratulations ladies.

Susannah’s Garden, Debbie Macomber (Mira), $7.99, No. 5 (Peak No. 4 ).
Cover of Night, Linda Howard (Ballantine), $7.99, No. 6 (debut). Paperback release.
Born in Death, J.D. Robb (Berkley), $7.99, No. 10 (Peak No. 7).

The Wrong Hostage, Elizabeth Lowell (Avon), $7.99, No. 18 (Peak No. 11) paperback release.
All Together Dead, Charlaine Harris (Ace), $24.95, No. 20 (debut). This is the highest debut and the highest placement for Charlaine Harris. Her previous publiciation, Definitely Dead peaked at No. 27.
Captive of My Desires (Malory Family), Johanna Lindsey (Pocket), $7.99, No. 23 (Peak 11) paperback release.
The Witness, Sandra Brown (Warner), $6.99, No. 28 (Peak 28). Last week this book was 60.

Hot Stuff, Janet Evanovich, Leanne Banks (St. Martin’s Paperbacks), $7.99, No. 37 (Peak 4).
Don’t Look Down, Jennifer Crusie, Bob Mayer (St. Martin’s Press). $7.99 No. 50 (debut). The hardcover did not sell out and has been remaindered. Blog Happy informed me that HalfPrice has dozens of copies at $5.99.
Outsider, Diana Palmer (HQN), $7.99, No. 44 (Peak 21).

Night Lost, Lynn Viehl (Signet), $6.99, No. 48. This is the highest debut and placement for Lynn Viehl by a large margin. Dark Need, book 3 in the series, entered at No. 87 and then dropped after one week. Viehl’s book received a huge marketing push by Borders/Waldenbooks which likely helped her up the list. Hopefully this will encourage Signet to release Viehl’s books closer together. She certainly seems prolific enough to maintain a 2 book a year schedule.

Back On Blossom Street, Debbie Macomber (Mira), $24.95, No. 51 (Peak 26).
Highland Savage, Hannah Howell (Zebra), $6.99, No. 59 (Peak 59). Last week this book was at 119 despite bookscan numbers showing her far behind other books in sales. The same is true this week.
The Duke’s Indiscretion, Adele Ashworth (Avon), $6.99, No. 63 (Peak No. 63). I didn’t much like the heroine. Thought she was petty.
Don’t Scream, Wendy Corsi Staub (Zebra), $6.99, No. 66 (Peak 66).
No Humans Involved, Kelley Armstrong (Spectra), $20.00, No. 69 (debut). This is a nice price point given that Charlaine Harris’ book was $24.95 and about half the story (in terms of length).
When I Fall in Love, Lynn Kurland (Jove), $7.99, No. 72 (Peak 63).
Wolf River, Jill Gregory, Bantam, $6.99, No. 75 (debut). This is for sale at Fictionwise with 100% micropay rebate.

Raintree: Inferno, Linda Howard (Silhouette Nocturne), $5.25, No. 76 (Peak 40).
The River Knows, Amanda Quick (Putnam), $24.95, No. 79 (Peak 35).

Dark Seduction, Brenda Joyce (HQN), $7.99, No. 80 (Peak 80).
The Demon You Know, Christine Warren (St. Martin’s Paperbacks), $6.99 No. 97 (debut).

The Perils of Pursuing a Prince, Julia London, Pocket Star, $6.99, No. 100 (Peak 50).
Kiss of Midnight, Lara Adrian (Dell), $6.99, No. 114 (debut). This is the first time author Lara Adrian aka Tina St. John has cracked the lists. With her “back to back” release dates, I won’t be surprised to see her move up and possibly become an NYT Bestseller. It worked for Keri Arthur.

Wicked Fantasy, Nina Bangs (Berkley), $7.99, No. 118 (debut).
Homecoming
, Janet Dailey, Dinah McCall, Fern Michaels. Deborah Bedford, (HarperMonogram), $5.99, No. 108 (debut).
Immortals: The Calling (Book 1), Jennifer Ashley (LoveSpell), $6.99, No. 123 (debut). This is the first in a four book series written by three different authors. It will be interesting to see if all the authors appear on the list on the strength of it being a connected series.

Second Sight, Amanda Quick (Jove), $7.99, No. 131 (Peak 11).
McKettrick’s Heart, Linda Lael Miller (HQN), $7.99, No. 138 (Peak 5).
The Arrangement, Suzanne Forster (Mira), $6.99, No. 143 (debut).

Out of the list:

The Secret Passion of Simon Blackwell, Samantha James (Avon), $6.99,No. 112 (Peak 43).
The MacGregors: Daniel & Ian, Nora Roberts (Silhouette Special Releases), $7.99, No. 126 (Peak 16).

*Note, I erroneosly indicated that this was Forster’s first time on the list. That is not correct. She’s been on the list at least 8 times previous.

Jumping up and down with happiness for my pal Lara Adrian. I got to say “I told you so” to her because…I told her Kiss of Midnight would be a bestseller.

It’s good to be right. *grin*

Thanks for mentioning my first appearence on USA Today. I am stunned and beyond thrilled! The happy dancing hasn’t stopped in this house. :-) I too will be interested to see if the connected books enter the list.

Congrats to the other authors there, including Lara/Tina for her first time, and Nina Bangs–I’m such a fan!

I LOVE The Starter Wife, it should be at the top of the list!!! It’s an awesome book, I just finished it and now I’m going to be watching the mini-series when it comes on TV this month. I don’t trust these rankings anyway.
