USA Today Bestelling List, Week Ending April 29, 2007

Surely it is obvious by now which book remains at the number one position. It is Rhonda Byrne’s , The Secret. David Baldacci’s, Simple Genius, debuted at No. 2. More romances appeared on the list, with the paperback releases of big names like Debbie Macomber and Nora Roberts in her JD Robb persona leading the way. Harlequin had a good showing with 6 books on the list. This is positive news coming on the heels of its strong Q1 reports.
Susannah’s Garden, Debbie Macomber (Mira), $7.99, No. 4 (debut).
Born in Death, J.D. Robb (Berkley), $7.99, No. 7 (debut)
The Wrong Hostage, Elizabeth Lowell (Avon), $7.99, No. 11 (debut) paperback release
Captive of My Desires (Malory Family), Johanna Lindsey, Pocket, $7.99, No. 13 (Peak 11) This was a paperback release too.
Outsider, Diana Palmer (HQN), $7.99, No. 21 (debut)
Hot Stuff, Janet Evanovich, Leanne Banks, St. Martin’s Paperbacks, $7.99, No. 24 (Peak 4)
Back On Blossom Street, Debbie Macomber (Mira), $24.95, No. 26 (debut)
The River Knows, Amanda Quick (Putnam), $24.95, No. 35 (debut)
Raintree: Inferno, Linda Howard (Silhouette Nocturne), $5.25, No. 40 (debut). I wondered if this would show up on the list and it did. I believe it is the first Nocturne to appear and probably the first category novel to appear in a long time. Bookscan reported over 11,000 units in sales but most of these books are bought at grocery stores, Wal-mart, Target and so forth so I am sure that overall sales were enormous. Given that this is the start of an intertwined three book series whether the other two will receive the same attention. I am guessing not.
The Witness, Sandra Brown (Warner), $6.99, No. 60 (debut).
When I Fall in Love, Lynn Kurland (Jove), $7.99, No. 63 (debut)
Second Sight, Amanda Quick (Jove), $7.99, No. 67 (Peak 11).
The Perils of Pursuing a Prince, Julia London, Pocket Star, $6.99, No. 72 (Peak 50).
McKettrick’s Heart, Linda Lael Miller (HQN), $7.99, No. 77 (Peak 5).
Don’t Scream, Wendy Corsi Staub (Zebra), $6.99, No. 82 (debut)
Dark Seduction, Brenda Joyce (HQN), $7.99, No. 86 (debut)
The Duke’s Indiscretion, Adele Ashworth (Avon), $6.99, No. 96 (debut). All three of Ashworth’s “duke” books have made it onto the list with the highest peaking at 88. I would guess she is no longer a midlist author but a front list one now?
Prior Bad Acts, Tami Hoag (Bantam), $7.99, No. 105 (Peak 8). Fell from no. 47.
The Secret Passion of Simon Blackwell, Samantha James (Avon), $6.99,No. 112 (Peak 43). Amazed at the staying power of this book. I think its on its fourth week on the list.
Highland Savage, Hannah Howell (Zebra), $6.99, No. 119 (debut). Weirdly Bookscan report shows that a number of books sold better than Howell’s (1490) such as Loretta Chase’s lovely book, Not Quite A Lady (3191), and Julie Ann Long’s The Secret to Seduction (1939).
The MacGregors: Daniel & Ian, Nora Roberts (Silhouette Special Releases), $7.99, No. 126 (Peak 16).
The Starter Wife, Gigi Levangie Grazer (Pocket Star), $7.99, No. 140
The Last of the Red-Hot Vampires, Katie Macalister, Signet, $7.99, No. 147 (Peak 41).
***

Fascinating reading, as always. Thanks, Jane.

Oh, and might I ask, I assume the list itself provides the previous week’s placement and peak #s, but does it also tell you which books from the previous week fall out in the current week, or do you have to keep track of it?
May 04, 2007 @ 22:10:27
I keep track. Basically, I copy the last week’s post and fill out the list and whatever books end up at the end, I do a search to confirm that they are out.

Wow. My hat’s off to you, Jane.
