USA Today Besteller List, Week Ending May 13, 2007

There’s a new sheriff in town but its the factory known as James Patterson (co written with Maxine Paetro), The 6th Target. Byrne’s novel, The Secret, falls to an ignominious no. 2.

Most of the romance authors moved off the list and other than Debbie Macomber, the rest fell dramatically. Hannah Howell’s, Highland Savage, remains on the list at No. 99 after three weeks making me wonder if I shouldn’t read it.

Susannah’s Garden, Debbie Macomber (Mira), $7.99, No. 5 (Peak No. 4 ). I read that Macomber has a mailing list of 75,000 which requires three assistants to keep track of.
Cover of Night, Linda Howard (Ballantine), $7.99, No. 9 (Peak No. 6). Paperback release.

Born in Death, J.D. Robb (Berkley), $7.99, No. 22 (Peak No. 7).
The Third Victim, Lisa Gardner (Bantam), $6.99, No. 29 (debut).
The Wrong Hostage, Elizabeth Lowell (Avon), $7.99, No. 31 (Peak No. 11) paperback release.
Captive of My Desires (Malory Family), Johanna Lindsey (Pocket), $7.99, No. 38 (Peak 11) paperback release.
The Witness, Sandra Brown (Warner), $6.99, No. 45 (Peak 28). Last week this book was 60.
Hot Stuff, Janet Evanovich, Leanne Banks (St. Martin’s Paperbacks), $7.99, No. 46 (Peak 4).

Body Surfing, Anita Shreve (Little, Brown and Company), $25.99, No. 53 (Peak 18). I mention this only because it showed up on the Romance Bookscan list at No 3, selling 11,534 copies.
Don’t Look Down, Jennifer Crusie, Bob Mayer (St. Martin’s Press). $7.99 No. 54 (Peak 40). The paperback did not make the NYT list despite selling 6077 copies last week.
Back On Blossom Street, Debbie Macomber (Mira), $24.95, No. 58 (Peak 26).
All Together Dead, Charlaine Harris (Ace), $24.95, No. 67 (Peak No. 20). I have some theories about this book and this series. Harris is going to get a huge push from HBO’s show and will continue to be a bestseller but I think that her readership is becoming a bit disenchanted with the way that she discards characters which she wants readers to initially care about.
Raintree: Inferno, Linda Howard (Silhouette Nocturne), $5.25, No. 68 (Peak 40). This actually moved up the list from last week’s position of 76.
Outsider, Diana Palmer (HQN), $7.99, No. 75 (Peak 21).

Don’t Scream, Wendy Corsi Staub (Zebra), $6.99, No. 82 (Peak 66).
Highland Savage, Hannah Howell (Zebra), $6.99, No. 99 (Peak 59). I am at a loss to explain this title’s placement on the list. Those out of the list, such as Lara Adrian, sold more according to Bookscan. Adrian also sold better that Ashworth’s book and Brenda Joyce’s. I wonder where the discrepancy is because USAToday does not capture Wal-mart sales.
Wolf River, Jill Gregory, Bantam, $6.99, No. 104 (Peak No. 75).

Night Lost, Lynn Viehl (Signet), $6.99, No. 105 (Peak 48). Her sales fell by half from the previous week, but they were still stronger than others higher placed on this list. I suspect, though, she won’t climb out of the NYT extended list.
When I Fall in Love, Lynn Kurland (Jove), $7.99, No. 120 (Peak 63).
The Duke’s Indiscretion, Adele Ashworth (Avon), $6.99, No. 121 (Peak No. 63).

The MacGregors: Daniel & Ian, Nora Roberts (Silhouette Special Releases), $7.99, No. 132 (Peak 16). This was out of the list last week (USA had it at 163).
Dark Seduction, Brenda Joyce (HQN), $7.99, No. 133 (Peak 80).
Homecoming, Janet Dailey, Dinah McCall, Fern Michaels. Deborah Bedford, (HarperMonogram), $5.99, No. 148 (Peak 121).

Out of the List:

No Humans Involved, Kelley Armstrong (Spectra), $20.00, No. 69 (debut). This fell out of the list fast. It was No. 14 on the NYT List last week. I enjoyed it and it has a decent price point for a hardcover.
The River Knows, Amanda Quick (Putnam), $24.95, No. 79 (Peak 35). Only two weeks on the list. That has to be a disappointment.
The Demon You Know, Christine Warren (St. Martin’s Paperbacks), $6.99 Peak No. 97.

The Perils of Pursuing a Prince, Julia London, Pocket Star, $6.99, No. 100 (Peak 50). Four weeks for London.
Kiss of Midnight, Lara Adrian (Dell), $6.99, Peak No. 114. Next month’s release will go higher.

Wicked Fantasy, Nina Bangs (Berkley), $7.99, Peak No. 118.
Immortals: The Calling (Book 1), Jennifer Ashley (LoveSpell), $6.99, Peak No. 123.

Second Sight, Amanda Quick (Jove), $7.99, No. 131 (Peak 11).
McKettrick’s Heart, Linda Lael Miller (HQN), $7.99, No. 138 (Peak 5).
The Arrangement, Suzanne Forster (Mira), $6.99, No. 143 (debut).

Hannah Howell's, Highland Savage, remains on the list at No. 99 after three weeks making me wonder if I shouldn't read it.

How can you resist with a title like that? Highland + Savage = marriage of two of Romancelandia’s most powerful stereotypes. You don’t even need a virgin secretary or a secret baby to sell that one.

I’ve never read Howell before, but when I searched her name, she had several (maybe 15?) books on the USA Today list. None in the top 50 but she was there. Alot. So dunno what the appeal is but I am kind of interested.

**whistling** what? I don’t know what you are talking about. Clearly it says “out of the list.”

It takes a village of idiots to blog. I really need to start proofing my blog posts and one of these decades I will.
