According to the estimates by the Census Bureau, bookstore sales dropped 6.0% in April (following a 6.8% drop in March). The Census Bureau statistics are devoted to brick and mortar stores, however, and do not include direct mail or internet sales.

I live in a good sized city, (Nashville)I buy primarily paranormal romance or best seller fiction.We have in my neighborhood Davis Kidd and Barnes and Noble. I quit shopping at either one because Krogers or Walmart will have releases out before the bookstores AND at a discounted price. We are supposed to be getting a Books A Million soon , I’m curious to see what they have to offer, I’m not familiar with that store at all.
Bookstores are going to have to get more competitive on prices to beat discount stores and amazon.com or they’re going to keep having decreasing sales. At Davis Kidd , I went to purchase a Sherrilyn Kenyon release that was supposed to have been released 2 days before, they didnt have it and the clerk told me they were waiting to see if anyone requested it before they ordered any shelf copies! um no.. I didnt want to request it, I went to krogers and there it was on the shelf and quickly in my hot little hands to take home! I haven’t been back to Davis Kidd since.
