Daily Deals: YA and dogs

It looks like we’re entering a lull of discounts. Many of the discounted books have been on sale before and there are fewer discounts from publishers overall. For example, BN used to have a several pages of its $2.99 ebooks but now there are only three. Even Amazon seems to have drawn back from the discounting a little.

Under the Never Sky by Veronica RossiUnder the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi . $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

Since she’d been on the outside, she’d survived an Aether storm, she’d had a knife held to her throat, and she’d seen men murdered. This was worse.

Exiled from her home, the enclosed city of Reverie, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland—known as The Death Shop—are slim. If the cannibals don’t get her, the violent, electrified energy storms will. She’s been taught that the very air she breathes can kill her. Then Aria meets an Outsider named Perry. He’s wild—a savage—and her only hope of staying alive.

A hunter for his tribe in a merciless landscape, Perry views Aria as sheltered and fragile—everything he would expect from a Dweller. But he needs Aria’s help too; she alone holds the key to his redemption. Opposites in nearly every way, Aria and Perry must accept each other to survive. Their unlikely alliance forges a bond that will determine the fate of all who live under the never sky.

In her enthralling debut, Veronica Rossi sends readers on an unforgettable adventure set in a world brimming with harshness and beauty.

This book has been on sale before for 2.99 but this is the lowest price so far.

When his high-school girlfriend enrolls in the program, he has no idea that Miranda plans to get him in a compromising position. But to carry out her deviously sexy revenge, Miranda will have to get up-close and personal with Dane all over again. She got nowhere being a good girl; it’s time to be a little naughty. But falling in love with the man who broke her heart was never part of the plan…

This is the first in the Bluebonnet series.

Defy Sara B. LarsonDefy by Sara B. Larson. $ 2.51 Google

From the Jacket Copy:

A lush and gorgeously written debut, packed with action, intrigue, and heart-racing romance. Alexa Hollen is a fighter. Forced to disguise herself as a boy and serve in the king’s army, Alex uses her quick wit and fierce sword-fighting skills to earn a spot on the elite prince’s guard. But when a powerful sorcerer sneaks into the palace in the dead of night, even Alex, who is virtually unbeatable, can’t prevent him from abducting her, her fellow guard and friend Rylan, and Prince Damian, taking them through the treacherous wilds of the jungle and deep into enemy territory. The longer Alex is held captive with both Rylan and the prince, the more she realizes that she is not the only one who has been keeping dangerous secrets. And suddenly, after her own secret is revealed, Alex finds herself confronted with two men vying for her heart: the safe and steady Rylan, who has always cared for her, and the dark, intriguing Damian. With hidden foes lurking around every corner, is Alex strong enough to save herself and the kingdom she’s sworn to protect?

I reported the discounted price to Amazon so hopefully it is price matched by the time this post goes up. I like the idea of Alexa as Alex fighting with skill to be the prince’s guard. This was just published on the 7th so quite the discount for a new book. One of the two star reviews says it is more romance than fantasy but I don’t enjoy love triangles.

An Echo Through the Snow by Andrea ThalasinosAn Echo Through the Snow by Andrea Thalasinos. $ 2.99.

From the Jacket Copy:

Andrea Thalasinos’s debut novel is an inspiring story of how a single act of kindness can transform your life.

Rosalie MacKenzie is headed nowhere until she sees Smokey, a Siberian husky suffering from neglect. Rosalie finds the courage to rescue the dog, and—united by the bond of love that forms between them—they save each other.

Soon Rosalie and Smokey are immersed in the world of competitive dogsled racing. Days are filled with training runs, the stark beauty of rural Wisconsin, and the whoosh of runners on snow. Rosalie discovers that behind the modern sport lies a tragic history: the heartbreaking story of the Chukchi people of Siberia. When Stalin’s Red Army displaced the Chukchi in 1929, many were killed and others lost their homes and their beloved Guardians—the huskies that were the soul and livelihood of their people.

Alternating between past and present, telling of a struggling Chukchi family and a young woman discovering herself, An Echo Through the Snow takes readers on a gripping, profound, and uplifting dogsled ride to the Iditarod and beyond, on a journey of survival and healing.

At the publisher’s request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management software (DRM) applied.

People love books about dogs, don’t they? The cover quotes are from people who have written books with dogs so I guess this book is for dog lovers. Kirkus wrote “Thalasino’s evocations of Siberian and Wisconsin seascapes and landscapes are deft and richly embroidered. Her characters hold tantalizing potential (particularly the troubled and secretive Dan Villieux), yet even the connection between Jeaantaa and Rosalie remains oddly forced rather than fated. Beautifully drawn and emotionally resonant, this book unfortunately stumbles over its unrealized characters.”

I think that $2.51 is at least $2.50 too much for DEFY. The “heroine” was one of the whiniest, poutiest, TSTL leading ladies I’ve encountered out of a 70’s Old Skool bodice-ripper.

Thea (of The Book Smugglers) said it much better than I ever could.

Wisconsin has a sea? Who knew?

No sea, but it certainly feels like Siberia here. The huskies must feel right at home.

Thanks for the comment and link on Defy hapax; I’ve seen that book around and it had been on the ‘maybe pick up at a good price list’ but my reading time is too precious right now for tstl.
