From the Jacket Copy:

Dating the Prince of Darkness has its challenges . . .

Leila’s psychic abilities have been failing her,and now she isn’t sure what the future holds. If that weren’t enough, her lover Vlad has been acting distant. Though Leila is a mere mortal, she’s also a modern woman who refuses to accept the cold shoulder treatment forever–especially from the darkly handsome vampire who still won’t admit that he loves her.

Like choosing between eternal love and a loveless eternity . . .

Soon circumstances send Leila back to the carnival circuit, where tragedy strikes. And when she finds herself in the crosshairs of a killer who may be closer than she realizes, Leila must decide who to trust–the fiery vampire who arouses her passions like no other, or the tortured knight who longs to be more than a friend? With danger stalking her every step of the way, all it takes is one wrong move to damn her for eternity . . .

Hopefully you bought the first one on sale and then didn’t pick the new one up yet because it’s for sale now. I didn’t love it but it’s entertaining.

Old Man's War by John ScalziOld Man’s War by John Scalzi. $ 2.99 Amazon | Google Play

From the Jacket Copy:

John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife’s grave. Then he joined the army.

The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce-and aliens willing to fight for them are common. The universe, it turns out, is a hostile place.

So: we fight. To defend Earth (a target for our new enemies, should we let them get close enough) and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has gone on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding.

Earth itself is a backwater. The bulk of humanity’s resources are in the hands of the Colonial Defense Force, which shields the home planet from too much knowledge of the situation. What’s known to everybody is that when you reach retirement age, you can join the CDF. They don’t want young people; they want people who carry the knowledge and skills of decades of living. You’ll be taken off Earth and never allowed to return. You’ll serve your time at the front. And if you survive, you’ll be given a generous homestead stake of your own, on one of our hard-won colony planets.

John Perry is taking that deal. He has only the vaguest idea what to expect. Because the actual fight, light-years from home, is far, far harder than he can imagine-and what he will become is far stranger.

At the publisher’s request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management software (DRM) applied.

This is Scalzi’s debut book and had a ton of really good reviews.

“Gripping and surpassingly original. It’s Starship Troopers without the lectures. It’s The Forever War with better sex. It’s funny, it’s sad, and it’s true.”

I’ve never heard of this author before but the blurb makes it seem like it is up my alley. There are only a few reviews and ratings for it but one 3.5 star review says it’s lighthearted and easy to read. Another said it reminded her of an 80s series romance (those were fairly good though).

I read the Sandra Brown book years ago (I went on a short spree of Sandra Brown stories). I remember enjoying it at the time, but I’ve never felt compelled to re-read it. There’s a twist at the end that I didn’t see coming, though, and I love me a good twist.

Love me some Jeaniene Frost! Shame I already have this book and can’t benefit from the price drop. Oh well. Maybe I’ll just go listen to my audiobook version of it to console myself.

I’ve never read Scalzi’s actual published work but totally dig his blog.

The Scalzi book is pretty good! He has some cool ideas and he has the writing chops to flesh out the characters and their relationships. No cardboard characters here!

I generally like NK Jemisin. Sometimes they sag in the middle, then something rips through the story like a lightning bolt that makes it all worthwhile.

    Hmm. I think I may be a fan :)
