Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood Series #1) by J. R. WardDark Lover by J. R. Ward. $ 1.99

From the Jacket Copy:

“Dark fantasy lovers, you just got served” (New York Times Bestselling Author Lynn Viehl). Return to where it all began—in the first novel in the phenomenal Black Dagger Brotherhood series by #1 New York Times bestselling author J. R. Ward….

The only purebred vampire left on the planet and the leader of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, Wrath has a score to settle with the slayers who killed his parents centuries ago. But when his most trusted fighter is killed—orphaning a half-breed daughter unaware of her heritage or her fate—Wrath must put down his dagger and usher the beautiful female into another world.

Racked by a restlessness in her body that wasn’t there before, Beth Randall is helpless against the dangerously sexy man who comes to her at night with shadows in his eyes. His tales of the Brotherhood and blood frighten her. Yet his touch ignites a dawning new hunger—one that threatens to consume them both….

Penguin is getting the hang of the discounting game. The first seven books of the Black Dagger Brotherhood are each $1.99. These are the best books in the series. I still remember my first encounter with the series in the bookstore. The cover was all red with a dagger on it. There was no person–and it was so striking that I had to buy it.

An Arranged Marriage by Jo BeverleyAn Arranged Marriage by Jo Beverley. $ FREE

From the Jacket Copy:

Eleanor Chivenham didn’t put much past her vile brother, but even she had not anticipated his greedy scheme to dupe a rich earl into mistaking her for a lightskirt! With her reputation in shreds and her future ruined, a defeated Eleanor was forced to agree to a hasty wedding. But marriage to the mysterious Nicholas Delaney, with his casual elegance and knowing smile, was more than she’d bargained for. He doubtless thought the worst of her, but when society gossip soon told her all about his beautiful French mistress, Eleanor tried to act with the cool dignity required in a marriage of convenience. But how long could she hold out against his undeniable charm—or the secret desires of her heart?

For the sake of family honor, Nicholas Delaney agreed to wed a wronged lady. In truth, such chivalry ran counter to his carefully wrought image of a carousing, dissolute rogue—the guise so vital to his secret political mission. He hoped to keep his new wife in the background until a spy was trapped, but Eleanor’s beauty and fighting wit were impossible to ignore. In fact, she presented quite a challenge to his prowess with women—and a test of his formidable will!

I’m not sure how long this will be free so you’ll want to pick it up right away.

Hopeless by Colleen HooverHopeless by Colleen Hoover. $ Free AMZN | Apple

From the Jacket Copy:

Would you rather know a truth that makes you feel hopeless, or keep believing the lies?

Beloved and bestselling author Colleen Hoover returns with the spellbinding story of two young people with devastating pasts who embark on a passionate, intriguing journey to discover the lessons of life, love, trust—and above all, the healing power that only truth can bring.

Sky, a senior in high school, meets Dean Holder, a guy with a promiscuous reputation that rivals her own. From their very first encounter, he terrifies and captivates her. Something about him sparks memories of her deeply troubled past, a time she’s tried so hard to bury. Though Sky is determined to stay far away from him, his unwavering pursuit and enigmatic smile break down her defenses and the intensity of the bond between them grows. But the mysterious Holder has been keeping secrets of his own, and once they are revealed, Sky is changed forever and her ability to trust may be a casualty of the truth.

Only by courageously facing the stark revelations can Sky and Holder hope to heal their emotional scars and find a way to live and love without boundaries. Hopeless is a novel that will leave you breathless, entranced, and remembering your own first love.

I think Hoover writes a good emotional story but the contrivances and coincidences that occurred, particularly at the end of the story, kind of left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I thought Brie at Romance Around the Blog had a great take on the book. It’s an easy and compelling read and worth downloading for Free.

Disenchanted & Co. by Lynn ViehlDisenchanted & Co. by Lynn Viehl. $ 2.99.

From the Jacket Copy:

The first half of Disenchanted & Co. In a steampunk version of America that lost the Revolutionary War, Charmian (Kit) Kittredge makes her living investigating magic crimes and exposing the frauds behind them. While Kit tries to avoid the nobs of high society, as the proprietor of Disenchanted & Co. she follows mysteries wherever they lead.

Lady Diana Walsh calls on Kit to investigate and dispel the curse she believes responsible for carving hateful words into her own flesh as she sleeps. While Kit doesn’t believe in magic herself, she can’t refuse to help a woman subjected nightly to such vicious assaults. As Kit investigates the Walsh family, she becomes convinced that the attacks on Diana are part of a larger, more ominous plot—one that may involve the lady’s obnoxious husband.

Sleuthing in the city of Rumsen is difficult enough, but soon Kit must also skirt the unwanted attentions of nefarious deathmage Lucien Dredmore and the unwelcome scrutiny of police Chief Inspector Thomas Doyle. Unwilling to surrender to either man’s passion for her, Kit struggles to remain independent as she draws closer to the heart of the mystery. Yet as she learns the truth behind her ladyship’s curse, Kit also uncovers a massive conspiracy that promises to ruin her life—and turn Rumsen into a supernatural battleground from which no one will escape alive.

The very first Lynn Viehl I read was “If Angels Burn”. Viehl was the first author I remember who used the “scent” thing in vampires. The premise of If Angels Burn was very cool. The vampire needed some surgery and kidnapped reconstructive surgeon Alexandra Keller because she was once described as the fastest knife in medicine. I still think that’s a great book.

I fell off the Viehl bandwagon because her stories became less romance and more UF. I’m not sure where the steampunk series falls.

Head’s up if you’re interested in the Viehl book: buy the one that’s titled Disenchanted & Co. The title is correct in the description here but the cover is for a different book (Her Ladyship’s Curse). The edition that’s called Disenchanted & Co. is a combination of Her Ladyship’s Curse and His Lordship Possessed, each of which are $2.99. Why pay the same for only a piece of the book?

Loved An Arranged Marriage when I read it years ago. Eleanor and Nicholas are such great characters. Made me an instant fan of Jo Beverley and the Company of Rogues series. Quickly added this to my digital keeper shelf!
(Trigger warning there is a rape in the story)

I loved Lynn Viehl’s books, too, but can’t say exactly why I stopped reading. The BDB books, the early ones, were my crack. These are great prices, but how many more ways do I need to own them?

Okay, that was weird — sorry for the blank mesage

@Joanna: Thank you for the heads up. I know that some people scoff at trigger warnings, but I have enough friends with PTSD that I always respect them.

I’m not triggered by much in romance novels, but I also appreciate hearing about certain potentially traumatic elements — it helps me save certain books for when I feel emotionally secure enough to work through the difficult parts.

The Night Watch books by Sergei Lukyanenko are all 1.99 each. A whole series for $8. Woot! Plus they are very good urban fantasy. Plus it doesn’t take place in the USA!
